Have you ever looked at the frequency response of your room and thought:
Is this really what my room sounds like?
Is it really THAT bad?
It’s so easy to get worried that there might be a serious problem that you don’t know anything about.
How is there any way to trust what you’re hearing if this is what your speakers sound like!
In this video I want to go through a few examples of what a typical frequency response looks like in a small, untreated room.
I'll show you what you need to be aware of to understand what you’re looking at, the two main things to watch out for, and what to ignore.
And I want to give you a simple trick you can use to figure out what it is you are actually hearing.

This channel needs more recognition. No audio voodoo what so ever, only genuine info based on empirical scientific measurements. Superb stuff.

Man! the narrow dip thing and the psychoacoustic measurement saved my life, I was becoming insane with the 59hz that didn´t change (or sound any different) even applying EQ to the output of my computer, thank you!

Thanks for sharing. How about a video on reading the other graphs, such as clarity? There's not much info from REW.

Awesome video! Can you show how you measure? I usually do either one sweep hat the listening position or i move the mic while playing pink noise to get kind of a middled result and i use sonarworks... but i am curious how you do it

I'm downloading the guide right now. I like how you approach the topics. Thank you for sharing the knowledge. I need to share the room I make music in with my flatmate because she needs a space to WFH. Noise is not a problem for her. so to give both of us a little more privacy, we were thinking of building a divider in the middle of the room. Is it a good idea to build it like a massive bass trap? The room doesn't sound bad apart from standing waves at 110hz. The goal would be taming the standing wave and the decay of the room. My side would get more acoustic treatment of course. Should I make so particular calculation for placing the divider to achieve such goals or can I build it exactly in the middle of the room?

Hey - good stuff. How would you tackle the unbalanced dip between left and right speaker @12:43? E.g. DSP the low end frequency of the left seaker up a couple dbs to match the right? Thanks for the great content!

Would you be opening to do a video on how to acoustically treat a small mixing room where there’s a slanted ceiling? I can hardly find information on this. Our room has a ceiling where the ceiling slants up from mixing desk. Our room’s dimensions are L 144” x W 74” x H 98” (front of mix position) to 120” (back of mix position, door is located here too). Thanks!

Thank you! In case that you have a different takes from different positions, is there a way to export an average to IR wav.format or only one measurement per channel (mono o stereo export)? Thank you.

Maybe I've got a solution to a free room correction option, but I'd like to know your take on my method. I wonder if you can put on an EQ on your master track and dip and boost those frequencies that the graph shows? When bouncing your mix remember to mute that EQ of cours! Another option: I've tried to use a sine wave tool in studio one, to sweep around every frequency that seems to sound boosted or ducked by the room, then finding that excact frequency and dip or boost until I can't hear any dipping or boosting when I slowly sweep the sine wave back and forth around that frequency. In the end I can sweep slowly from 10 hz to 20000hz and have a clean sine wave sound with no dips end boosts when sweeping all the way up. But I wonder if there is a risk doing this? Like this home made room correction EQ will fool my ear with phase issues? My dips are pritty narrow at some frequencies and I use 3 instanses of my MautodynamicEQ by Melda Productions to have enough bands to dip and boost alle frequencies I hear have problems (I'm not using the dynamicEQ option). If my sine wave sounds normal with those 3 EQs, I guess I'm in a pretty flat sounding listening place with those EQs turned on? Do you have an opinion about this method? Thanks for all your great videos! Others are welcome to comment for sure :)

How does the volume of the sound affect this chart? Will the peaks or dips change depending on the volume/output of the sound source?

After following your instructions. I got much better result with my audiophile system. My Rew measurement for my untreated L-shape room is too good to be true. Only +-2db fron 80Hz to 20khz and i got strange upward trend line for SPL curve😅 is this normal or definitely something wrong with my measurement? I measured 3 times with same result. I follow instructions on rew website, measured both my L+R channels. Tools i used: Icon upod pro soundcard, Mic isk at 100 (these tools are popular in my country)

still intrigued about the big deeps on lower frequencies ? what if have a 55hz huge deep , even if narrow you ll totally lose the fundamental tone on a open A note on bass (for instance) should n t i be worried about that ? what s the solution ? changing the listening position ? (sorry about bad English)

is there any software (plugin) that would help me get a decent mix, without external treatment if my room sucks. For example EX mix 2 from toontrak, or any other one. Please, if you would be so kind to answer this to me, would be very much appreciated.

I did the Bass Hunter technique a few days ago. Now, I have an almost perfect shoebox-like room and it looks like the low-end sweet spot is just couple inches off the center axis of my room. Is that possible? Or am I just crazy/deaf?

Frequency response graph at one point taken in a room, is the least useable data of all. I had years ago quite flat FR response, I was so noob back then, looking only at the fr graph. The room did not sound so good... Real pros don't really look at the FR graph that much.
