Paint adhesion is a lot more complex than just opinion of some believes; physical bond, chemical bond, flexibility and chemical compatibility are all important factors. Sheers is a totally different subject. Paint companies spent a great deal of efforts in research to ensure adhesion which including environmental exposure. However, an art painting may contains paints from different chemicals or diluted. Dry brushing is another problem. To say either primer or gesso is better over the other is over simplify a complex issue.
@WildCreates3 жыл бұрын
You are correct, Paint adhesion is complex, so is rocket science and brain surgery. However, you need to start simple to get people interested in a topic. If their curiosity is sparked, they can start their own rabbit hole of research to learn more about the subject matter.

I varnished a painting that was primed with balck acrylic had dried completely for close to a year. The gamvar varnish removed some of the oil paint and ruined the painting. I think there is a better adhesion with the gesso like you mentioned. Just a heads up for those that go to varnish a black canvas that was primed with acrylic. I don't want anyone to ruin a painting like I did.
@WildCreates4 жыл бұрын
In my opinion the Black Acrylic Primer wasn't the issue. A lot of people forget that oil can take a super long time to truly be dry. Some of my past painting have taken more than 16 months to fully dry before I could varnish them.

@WildCreates3 жыл бұрын
Oh sorry i miss read it. Whenever you add something you are technically diluting or shifting the integrity of the paint or medium. So think about ratios when doing so, this way you can increase the quantity while maintaining the quality or increase it. For number 2, Yes you can do that and many painters do. If you use color, its called toning your canvas with an acrylic wash. An acrylic wash is made by thinning paint with a lot of water. Thinning reduces both the amount of acrylic and pigment in the mixture. When a wash dries you end up with widely dispersed pigment particles settled down into and on the painting surface, with a very small amount of acrylic binder Hope that helps

Don't buy Bob Ross products because all your doing is supporting the people who ripped Bob Ross amd his family off. Bob Ross lovers boycott the products and those who stole his name!
