This 2007 Acura TSX 6-speed manual hot rod is due for a new clutch.
Not a bad job on the floor using a few time-saving shortcuts!
Also the Radio HVAC Sub-display is intermittent, so I fix that no-parts-required while it's in the shop.

No love for the flywheel huh….a 120 grit roloc disk would help greatly here as opposed to actually getting the flywheel resurfaced…but major props for doing a clutch on the ground….she got every mile out of her old disc! Take care! I’d love to see a “no parts required” clutch job one day! 😅

The decision not to surface the flywheel and replace the pilot bearing was unexpected but, if I know Ivan he weighed all the variables and chose to save the customer money over replacing parts that are 'good-enough' for the task at hand.

There is a British YT channel, and all the guy does is mobile clutches, though he seems to swap flywheels as well, probably reduces comebacks. He is super set up, lays down some foam tiles, jacks the car up and, like most professionals, makes it look easy.

kzfaq.info Respect to that guy (and Ivan!) for sure. I remember bench-pressing a Golf MK4 transmission off, and then back into place from the ground. Not something I'd love do every day! Pretty sure the swaps are dual mass flywheels, which tend to go bad (internal springs) at the same time as the friction material, and need replacement.

Watching this video brought back memories! I've done many clutch jobs and other work laying under a car. About 10 years ago I invested in a lift. Yes, I did have to get a few accessories, mainly a couple of support stands and a proper transmission lift, but it was the best money I ever spent on a tool!!! Even routine oil changes are much easier. If you decide to get a lift, you won't regret it!!

Did a clutch this EXACT same way on my rare ‘00 V6 5MT Camry. Just had to bend one plastic panel support clip behind the driver wheel and plenty of room for tranny to move to the side. Radiator, steering shaft, and entire subframe didn’t have to be even loosened. With rusty exhaust bolts just begging to cause leaks on reassembly this is the way to go over dropping the subframe. Hardest part of the whole job was passenger axle intermediate bearing was seized in the rear motor mount. Had to remove axle and mount together then destroy axle bearing and replace. Rare V6 5MT axles meant the bearing had to be replaced instead of whole new axle assy.

Cold solder joints/cracked solder joints cause SO many problems. In the mid 2000s there was an "epidemic" of problems after RoHS forced board manufacturers to "get the lead out". The wave solder machines and processes needed time to "work out the kinks", but a lot of products suffered. The display in this Acura was probably manufactured in 2005 or 2006, right at the peak of these problems. Great job, Ivan!

I got my clutch replaced by a brake and clutch specialist back in 2008 because I had to take the day off work to get it replaced in my car that I just bought, the pressure plate blew up at about 183,000 kilometres (114,000 miles). I got them to supply & fit a new flywheel & pressure plate kit since the 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engines are fitted with a disposable flywheel which can't really be machined. I drove the car for another 8 years & at about 325,000 kilometres (about 202,000 miles) I had to replace a leaking rear main oil seal & I was unemployed at the time, the clutch release bearing had also been sticking on The shaft that it slides on as well,I replaced it in 2012 as it leaked. I was unemployed at the time meaning that I was short of money so I couldn't afford a new clutch kit so I just ordered a Banhoff 11" 26 spline clutch disc as well as the rear main oil seal & carrier gasket. I reset the cam ring inside of the clutch pressure plate on a hydraulic press so it can adjust itself to the new clutch disc,I only wished that I could've replaced the flywheel back in 2016 because it had high spots on the flywheel, it's o.k. but sometimes when I reverse uphill it has a shudder. The old clutch disc had done 142,000 kilometres (88,000 miles) but I decided to throw a new clutch disc in while I had the clutch & flywheel removed from the engine,I couldn't afford new flywheel bolts so I reused the OEM bolts that the clutch specialist Probably never replaced anyway. They're only 11 millimetre diameter bolts which I did up to over 100 Newton Metres so I was worried about reusing them. I also pulled the clutch release bearing apart, cleaned & regreased the ball bearing & the races, I also put a small smear of grease on the shaft that the clutch release bearing sits around to prevent it from sticking again which did cause the clutch to slip under load. At almost 368,000 kilometres (228,709 miles) the car is going good now, note that I replaced the rear transmission mount in 2018 when I did a hydraulic lifter & Timing chain kit replacement,I used one to suit my model of Holden VY Commodore which is fitted with the 4L60E automatic transmission & 3.8 litre Buick L36 V6 engine in rear wheel drive form, mine is a manual Chevrolet LS1 V8 powered Holden VY Commodore but. It was cheaper than the T56 Tremec 6 speed manual transmission mount which is fitted into my car standard which runs the 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine,it cured a tailshaft vibration problem on takeoff & slipping out of 2nd & 3rd gear while turning 90° right into a cross intersection which is on the left hand lane in Australia. So a $23 AUD 4L60E transmission mount fixed 2 problems at once as the original mount got too soft !

Hi, great video.👍 When you reflowed the solder joints, it would be advisable to remove the old solder. It is probably lead free and has due to heating, oxidized. Removing the old solder, with solder wik or sucker, and using fresh solder will mean a more reliable joint as you are not mixing old with new. Also not sure what solder you are using, but mixing lead and unleaded solder in not recommended for reliability reasons. 👍

Yeah. I think it's a matter of who does the job. I know as a tech at a shop we would have replaced the Pilot bushing and Flywheel. Because if it comes back it's on you. Personally I try to avoid any reason for a comeback. Specially at a shop. If you only write it up for a clutch and no Flywheel and Pilot bearing/bushing and it comes back they'll ask why you didn't write it up for those. I have replaced the clutch kit, Flywheel, Pilot and the clutch slave and master regularly. Again Because I don't want the car to come back. Often customers don't understand that when replacing the clutch that you are not replacing the hydraulics. So if it does fail after clutch replacement all they know is that they have the same problem after just spending 1k to 1500. But as far as how Ivan is doing it. That's up to him. He's a grown man running his own business. So I'm sure he'll deal with whatever may or may not come the right way.

Blows my mind how fast some people go through clutches. I have 270K on my 06 Focus on it's original clutch. A friend of mine has an 03 Focus with over 330K on his original clutch. lol

because that focus engine is weak compared to the tsx motor, look up the hp and tq differences...low hp cars are easy on the clutch

My RSX AC and heater head unit doesn't work or power on when the weather outside is too cold (below about 30 deg. F.) I'm not sure how to diag. because I live in Texas and it's not cold right now.

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics I was thinking that also, because of what you have been teaching me 👍🏻Solder joint in the control head possibly? It was an auction car with a missing ambient temp sensor. I put one in tho.

Hey Ivan, I have the same car haha, the video will definitely be a future reference when my clutch goes out, thanks a lot! Quick question where did you purchase the clutch? Rockauto?

I would definitely get an oem throw out bearing. Aftermarket bearings quality will not hold the life of the clutch in most cases.

I "tried" to do a clutch replacement video recently on a Maxima that I highlighted in a few videos, but it went HORRIBLY. ...and to top it off, all the video is on a dead hard drive that needs to go out for data recovery, if I find a place I'm comfortable with...

You don't need to drop the sub you can do it all from the bottom very similar technic personally I avoid dropping subs to avoid alignments afterward but your way had way more room.

Hey, got a 04 tsx 6 speed, toasted clutch, bad 3rd synchro (can shift it without grinding)…. Can i change the clutch and flywheel without rebuilding the trans? Also, what i would be installing it’s a stage 2 action clutch and lightened flywheel .. please let me know. Idk if it’s okay to do that. I wanna rebuild ut later on with a lsd and new shifter box and cables and the whole 9 yards.. but for now i wanna have it driving again.. it only grinds third on hard acceleration.
