does the hondatas thing need to stay plugged in to hold the tune?

No it does not, you can disconnect after tuning

I tried the stage 1 burples, then switched it back to Type S.

The stock type s sounds on the type s sound awesome with the Hondata tune. I can see how the type r needs level 1 or higher
