During the Cold War, the U.S. Navy stored dozens of nuclear depth charges at the Modified Advanced Underwater weapons facility (MAUW) at Adak N.A.F. in Alaska. The base closed in 1997, but the bunkers that housed the bombs are still there, along with the guard building that housed a detachment of U.S. Marines.

I was the Nuclear Emergency Team (NET) Officer from 1986 to 1988 when the base finally passed its NTPI inspection after two failed prior attempts. Wonder years?

Did the same in 90-91. We sat on the end of the runway a few times while flying them off the island. All done in the dark off night.

I was at the Marine Barracks from Sept 87 - Sept 89 and worked at the compound for my first year there as one of the COGs. We called the building you walked through the RFF or Reaction Force Facility. and it was much different in my day. No little paintings on the walls and clean. Very clean. The ACC was kind of cool. It looked like a mini NORAD back then. I don't "remember" any phone booth when I was there but there was an office line in the COG's Hut. It could be used for personal calls if there was an emergency.

I worked at the Shop as a TMT2 1976-1978 , wish you toured the Shop instead of the Marine Bunker, they were depth bombs not charges . Mark 57

I too was stationed in Adak, was my first duty station. January 87 to January 89. As Sgt Kidd stated, The RFF use to be spotless. As well as post 2 over looking the entrance.

I was there Sept 82- Sept 83. That fall in 82, a corporal Snider was messing around with his 45. Lance/corporal Skidmore just came in from being relieve from post. He was headed toward the back, to eat and get some sleep. Cpl. Snider called him, he turned around and Snider pointed his 45 at him. He said," L/cpl. Skidmore, I'm going to shoot you!" He pulled the trigger and despite Snider pushing the magazine button and the magazine dropping down from the magazine well, it caught a round and chambered it. The pistol went off and the bullet struck Skidmore in his upper right shoulder. The bullet went through and on to the back. There wasn't so many walls and doors back then and the bullet went into the back, above a sleeping Marine, who was on a top bunk, and it lodged into the wall. Being first assign to duty, waiting to get badge clearance, I was guarding the airfield of fighter jets that time. Later a Lt. went on a SAR mission and fell to his death, on one of the mountains. I hated that place. I kept having bad dreams about this cold, dark, lonely place all through high school, and then having to relive it.

I was on Adak from Feb, 1976 to Aug, 1977. You notice that they were fooling around with live ammunition. We were told to stay far away from this facility and don't even look at it as you drove by because the Marines would shoot you. I was pretty skeptical that they would actually shoot you without a better reason than just looking, but they did take security pretty seriously there.

There is pretty much an exact copy of that "Marine Guard bldg" at NAS North Island. They had nukes there as well and Marines to guard them.

Haha. I was stationed there with the Navy, 88-90. I did not know there were nukes there. Suspected, but that’s about all.

Too bad they didn't even show the actual AUW Building that was the reason for the compound. The Marine barracks wasn't there when I was stationed on Adak.

It's still kinda "off putting" in a way to see armed civilians walking around it... Creepy...
