5:10 abandoned church; my mother tells the story in the mid-1950s about going to the Adak church alone after dark to pick up some materials. For whatever reason she had to park the car further away than usual and while walking to the church was chased by a pack of abandoned dogs right up the stairs and barely closed the door in time. From that point on Navy men with rifles were sent to kill abandoned dogs in the hills on sight. If that is the original Adak church, I went there many times as a youngster with my family from 1954-58.

A wonderful tour. I see that the old Kuluk bay housing has survived over 35 years of Adak but the new houses are being blown to smithereens. I appreciate the view of "Magazine Loop" which I never explored while I lived there; a few places one simply did not go uninvited.

At 1:15 you can see one of the damaged Bayshore houses, just past the small building near the road. That was our home from Dec 80-Dec 82 (B5E). Makes me so sad to see it nearly totally destroyed.

These homes are perfect for the Government to Create a Migration , Asylum seeker Process center. They can be in individual quarters for those who work and want to pay rent or group quarters for those who don't work while their processing takes place. It is a safe contained area, and there is a airport to send them back when they do not qualify. The government can create a debit card system which they can pay their rent , food and clothing cost and other house hold bills to prepare those who may eventually qualify. The Military can set up a Military Hospital and provide the security so that the cost will not fall on the cities. Have the Alaska Congress, change the law so that anyone having children will not be able to claim citizenship until they become citizens themselves. They should be disqualified for asylum if they get pregnant while waiting for their asylum process to be processed. They must attend school and live in shared housing. The Migrants will be credited hourly pay for the maintenance and care of the landscaping roads and parks and buildings. They will have some work in the Chow halls that will be available. This is cost effective, because it is owned by the Government already. It will allow jobs for the local citizens who will help with the Migrant process. We can also use our US citizens who are homeless to have housing and jobs to help them get on their feet.

@nepafu666 they just want to live in the US. This would be a great processing station instead of them being free to roam across the country. Housing and work is readily available. If it is good enough for our Military to live there, it is good enough for them. It is better than waiting in a prison like center. I will be a deterrence. Alaska can the people.

@@user-jz3vc9kd2j TSA? In Adak? What are all the other people doing there? I mean, it's not like a farming or manufacturing area, White Alice is long since obsolete, the nukes are gone, the VP squadrons don't deploy there any longer. It seems to me the place is useless except for independently wealthy people who love cold, wind, and beautifully clear water. I flew the SAR helicopters there and we could see bottom at 120 feet deep. When I was there Special Services got skis and we screwed on the bindings and started the Adak Ski Club but it only snowed a few days out of the year where the cabin was. I wonder if my red '65 Olds Cutlass is still there?

2:36 the left edge of the screen you'll see the good ol' golden arches of McDonalds. Which reminds me of the parody of their jingle: McDonald's is your kinda place, hamburgers in your face, French fries between your toes, dill pickles up your nose and don't forget their chocolate shakes they're made from rattlesnakes, McDonald's is your kinda place. 🍔🍟

@@gvschaaf Great pics! I assume the interior of the large wooden structure was Birchwood hangar. When I was there it was used for storage. Directly across the ramp was the AIMD hangar where I worked as airframes and power plants division officer. At AIMD, we did aircraft component parts and engine maintenance and repair. Since your visit, I think Birchwood hangar has been demolished. I've seen a vid of an Air Alaska arrival into Adak. As the plane taxied to the terminal, I saw a brief glimpse of the AIMD and VP squadron hangars but nothing where Birchwood hangar would have been. Until just this past week, I'd assumed Base Admin would have been used for city administration, but evidently, they're using the high school and have left base admin to deteriorate. But in your photo, I did see the overhead lights were still working in spite of debris lying on them deck. The high school building wasn't there when I was stationed there. There was an older school building where all grades were situated. And they hadn't built the McDonalds yet when I was there. They did have 1-story prefab houses. My boss, the AIMD Department Head lived in one. But the 2-story prefab were not there when I was, 08/73 - 06/75. I think in hindsight, maybe we should have maintained a naval presence on Adak, even if in reduced numbers, with capability of stepping up our presence in the island if circumstances warrant. Thanks very much for the link to your pics.

@tags NOLA - Awesome! It’s nice to hear from someone who served there. We’ve always enjoyed visiting and exploring, but there isn’t much context to what we see. If this was Birchwood, it was gone when we visited in 2012-16 (pin.it/1ELIajr). The metal hangar shown in this archive photo is still there, but the VP squadron was in a newer, larger building to the south (goo.gl/maps/JKMX8SwUmSEZ5CSU6). Here’s a photo of the exterior (flic.kr/p/bktsBZ). It was being used to store hundreds of appliances removed from base housing when we were there (flic.kr/p/bktnbg). The village offices are indeed in the high school, along with the clinic and post office. The only other building that still have the lights on are the airport terminal and grocery store, which moves every year or two due to roof leaks. It was in an old community center for a while, and is now in the former childcare building that looks like a Pizza Hut. It is staggering to see the investment made in Adak over the years, and hard to believe it made sense to just walk away.

@@gvschaaf unfortunately, none of these newer links worked, but I very much appreciate those earlier links. I've debated a return visit to Adak, but after seeing the deterioration of the facilities on base, it's one thing to see all that in a vid on my phone, but seeing it up close and in person might be a bit much. I am curious, is the BOQ still used as lodging for visitors. From vids I've seen so far, it seems visitors are billeted in some of the base married housing that's still being well maintained. I did see that the COs house has been allowed to deteriorate. Sad, it was one of the nicer homes on the base! It had a fire place!
