Inside the abandoned Naval Facility (NAVFAC) at Adak, Alaska. During the Cold War, this NAVFAC monitored a portion of the SOSUS undersea surveillance network. The NAVFAC tracked Soviet submarines and directed P-3 Orions to intercept them. The base closed in 1997.

I was there from June 1970 to June 1971. RMSN (Radioman Seaman). Worked in the radio room. I see where they changed up the floor plan since my stay. A lot of memories, especially the great guys I served with.

I was there '83-84. I was an OTA3, Ocean Systems Technician Analyst, part of SOSUS. After all these years I recognize the watch room, even without all the equipment. I have to wonder how all the tunnels at the main base have fared. Lol, when I was first stationed there, got lost a time or two in the tunnels trying to get from the club back to barracks.

Aug 74-Aug 75 OT PO-4 oz Tracked several pesky (can't say). The weather was beyond description, but as a 24 year old, I had the time of a lifetime. Tundra stomped up Moffet and Adagdak so many times I can't remember. By far the best year of my life. They even let me come in on my days off and work in the ET spaces and handbuilt a keyboard synthesizer. I could relay more, but, well too good to be true. The Display room seems more segmented,, I remember one large room with 4 - 40 beam Lofargram displays. I imagine they went digital waterfall displays as time went on. The engine rooms had GM-671 generators running at 400 Hz so as not to create a 60 Hz artifact. Sure didn't want to confuse those 50 Hz peskies. I'd love to go to Murmansk and visit the Komrads that I used to antagonize. On Christmas Eve, we would track Santa all night. The fake floor was to not introduce vibrations to the Lofar recorders, it really didn't make a shit. The extremely secure room was the Communications Technicians space. Waaaaaaaay beyond top secret, as locations of capitol assets was, and still is a big deal. The folks other than Navfac use to tell us that we refueled nuclear subs under the building. I never disagreed,, I thought it was funny as hell.

I was the operations officer here in 80-81. It was great duty although the weather could be a bit dicey at times.

Was there 69-79 & 83-87, watch floor & Career Counselor's office. it's amazing - the little things we remember, and things we forget...no NavFac gym on tour #1. Sad to see it all in decay, but such is the way of the world. " Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains."

The condition of this building is remarkable for being left to rot for the last 20 years. A Naval Air Station close to me has been abandoned for the same amount of time as Adak and has been overtaken by mold with the ceilings collapsing and too much asbestos...

In 1988 I worked in the computer room at the Navy Services and Support center in Auburn, WA. My job was to coordinate all the supplies shipments to Adak. Really seems like just yesterday.

I knew a couple of OTAs who went to Adak before it was closed down. I wonder if they are in the comment section....
