*CORRECTION* It was graciously pointed out to me in the comments that the button which I refer to in the video as the battery/card slot door release is in fact a multi-function button for the selector wheel. This enables the wheel to control more than one function, i.e. aperture AND shutter. This would have made the shooting experience much easier. My mistake there folks! Thanks again to @Jan Malmgren for point that out.

Great review, Adam! I enjoy your unique way of reviewing stuff. By the way, the button on the 907X that you refer to as the battery door release is in fact much more useful than that. It is the shift button that make the control wheel select either aperture or shutter speed. So just by pressing it and turning the wheel you can adjust for your exposure directly on the wheel, without needing to go into the menu on the screen.

The fact that I made such an obvious mistake (obvious now) in my assumption about the function of that button is wildly embarrassing haha That makes so much more sense and honestly changes at least part of my opinion towards the usage of this camera. I really appreciate you pointing that out, Jan! I'll tack on a sticky comment correcting the error. Oh and thanks so much for the kind words about the review. I feel like it's particularly important to strip off some of the pretention when it comes to the business of making pictures and I hope that carries over into these videos :)

Very nice review. I bought the 907X 50 CV II to digitize my ‘74 500 C/M and my late 60s & early 70s glass. My darkroom days are over & I have no interest in going back. Hasselblad’s color science is second to none. I get a kick out seeing that classic Hasselblad look in video too.

This is one of the better (if not best) 907X reviews I've seen , and I've watched/read most of them!. I'm a previous X1D owner but got out of the XCD system a few years ago. I seriously considered buying the 907X because recently got into a tech cam and can utilize the 50C ii as back-up back, and I was curious about the unique shooting experience as something I might be able to take advantage of. I rented the 907X, but it was a reminder of why I got out of X1D in the first place, plus 907X specific issues. With more time, I could probably learn to love the camera, but that's a questionable place to be for such and expensive system. The camera is much heavier than one might expect -- yes, I read the specs in advance, but still, its size belies the weight (past the point of giving the camera a quality feel). Nailing focus and no blur is tricky with no EVF and no stabilization on a 50MP sensor -- crank up the ISO on anything but a sunny day. If only viewing photos on a phone won't be an issue, but why buy a 50MP camera? The 907X is crippled by foul weather or bright sunlight (oh, but my previous comment re: ISO). IMO, one really needs Phocus to get the most of of Hassy cameras, and Phocus perf is horrendous (on my spec'd out 2019 Mac Pro). Finally, the IQ is great (if you're OK w/ colors being biased towards green), but the sensor is getting long in the tooth and it's not on the same level relative to other cameras as it was when the X1D was first introduced. I guess I fall into the hate it camp, despite wanting to love the camera, and I think this camera only makes sense if you're already deep into the Hassy system. Thanks for the review. I was ready to buy (convinced I would love it), but after watching this review, I decided to rent first. You saved me some $$$$. P.S. Regarding the sensor glass @4:00, I believe all digital camera sensors have a thin layer of glass covering them. Probably just more obvious w/ the 907X system because one can pull the back off and get an unobstructed view of the sensor from an angle.
@AdamWelch
@AdamWelch 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Roland, glad to hear you enjoyed the review and it helped you out a bit. I feel you summed up my attitude towards the 907X system perfectly when you said "...I think this camera only makes sense if you're already invested in the Hassy system." You're absolutely correct. With the X1D cameras, I felt as if anyone who's ever used a mirrorless system would feel right at home (relatively) out of the box. Contrasting that to the 907X (or any SLR/DSLR box-type) feeling of being a digital reincarnation of the 500 series from Hasselblad; which if you've never used this type of camera might leave some feeling lost. This is actually a point that's confused me when it comes to Hasselblad's mindset and strategy with releasing these cameras as complete systems instead of making the 50C backs available as an individual option. It would seem (and I've heard this directly from a large amount of people) that there is an enormous base of customers who already have film Hasselblad cameras that would love to have a digital back for their V systems but not buy an entirely new camera. It feels there's a big loss here.

I agree, especially when using their RAW processor in Phocus. I think I mentioned it in the review that while the 45P lens was great, I much preferred the 80mm F/1.9. The colors and contrast with that glass was, for lack of a better word, perfect. With the 45P I found the contrast to be a tad much out of camera at least for my tastes.

Hasselblad ELX - you need to connect the digi back to the ELX for the motorwind to re-cock the shutter - the other ports in/out are for flash sync say Linhof or similar 5x4 or for radio sync. The remote release button on the Hasselblad X series (The Orange and Silver one) connects to the headphone port. Cupla things - do not wear the strap - the unit inverts as you are walking and the catch rubs against your body and the back falls off - lucky I have insurance - do not even think about buying the optic - it is useless - you can use it to frame a subject but you still have to check where your focus is as the touch screen is prone to wandering.

This is a point which comes up quite bit and I whole-heartedly agree. I'm honestly no sure why Hasselblad hasn't offered the back as a stand-alone item. There is obviously a market for them. As a side note, what brand adapter are you using for you Sony? I've wanted to use my Bronica PG lenses with my A7RIII for a long time but right now the only option is a dual PG to EF / EF to E-mount adapter combo, which makes the entire rig ENORMOUSLY heavy. I wish someone would come out with a dedicated PG to E-mount adapter.

Medium Format is an interest to me although to be honest I will never need more than full-frame for my current needs. But anyway, thanks for the review and analisys of it. I had a look at the sample images on the Hasselblad website. Prettty stunning but I think I would be too scared to damage it due to it's high price.
@AdamWelch

I feel virtually EXACTLY the same way. I loved that camera but it is extremely "niche." As far as medium format is concerned I just can't justify (or afford) the upgrade from my A7R MK3. I feel as if that camera is approaching the apex of what digital cameras can achieve in terms of quality vs price, even with the smaller sensor.

Thank you for the review n comparison. Since Hasselblad is now part of the Chinese company DJI wonder if any of the parts or components are from China or put together in China or other countries, as this is comparatively inexpensive to Hasselblad’s other old beautiful cameras. Not sure being more affordable is that great if quality n design are not that great, such as not weatherproofed
@AdamWelch
@AdamWelch 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I believe DJI acquired Hasselblad in 2017. The 907X itself still bears the "Made in Sweden" phrase but the lens said "Made in China". I will add that the 907X itself (at least the battery compartment/card slots/interface outlets) are actually weather sealed. I think the batteries also stated they were made in China as well but don't quote me.
@YeeG7
@YeeG7 3 жыл бұрын
Do some research first dude, DJI bought Hasselblad but they still operate individually, the camera will still be "hand" made in Sweden, after all, Hasselblad is just "small workshop" and dji has insanely advantage in digital signal processing realm. true tone maybe one of the few things Hasselblad can provide other than the brand name itself. As for the lenses, most of the modern Hasselblad lenses are designed by fujifilm and made either in china or japan. As for the body, sensor is from sony, designed also by fujifilm. It is a very good looking camera and a very good toy for me to buy, nothing more. Also, if you incinerating the camera made in China will have poor quality, then you're just an old fart idiot that lives in the past:)

I think it's a nice concept camera but due to the rectangular sensor it's extremely limited, especially regarding the orientation - mainly because of the screen that only flips out horizontally and not vertically and you won't be able to see a lot in direct sunlight on the screen itself. If it had a square sensor like the classic 500 series square film (and even better: a full medium format square sensor(!) it would be great but this way it's just....well.... borderline useless. I guess that's why you're mainly (if not only) used it in a horizontal orientation. So while it may be nice for a few horizontal landscape and maybe interior photos - just about everything else will be rather cumbersome. Portraiture and fashion would be a huge pain and you'd be better off with the much cheaper Fuji GFX system - which incidentally has the same sensor. Also: I don't understand the comparison with the Sony camera.... what exactly were you comparing? Also#2: You can put the back on a V-system Hasselblad camera but the senor is much smaller than the 6x6 square format so it wouldn't be very satisfying.
@AdamWelch
@AdamWelch 3 жыл бұрын
I'll try to answer all your thoughts here :) One of the most common complaints about the 907X I've heard so far is in fact about the geometry of the sensor; as in why not 6x6 instead of the 6X4.5? That's a question only Hasselblad can answer and I doubt they ever will. My film medium format camera is a 6x7 so it felt more or less natural for me. The screen brightness in bright sun was actually never an issue for me and I used it in obscenely bright midday sun on quite a few occasions. I do wish the screen had more articulations however, i.e. downward tilt for more elevated shooting positions. I disagree about the screen making the system useless though, or even unsuitable for portraits. I actually shot some vertical orientated images which didn't make it to the review. I don't think the 907X would be ill suited for portrait work especially in a fixed studio setting. You're absolutely correct about the CFV II back being used on V-system but there are of course 6x4.5 format backs 120 and 220 film backs for the system and I've even seen a 70mm back as well (and I swear at some point I saw a 135 back but I may have imagined that). Point being, the fact that you would be using essentially a 6x4.5 back on a 500 series is definitely not unusual historically. More of a personal preference in my opinion. My biggest regret about my time with the CFV II back is not actually owning a film Hassy to try it on...I came close a few years ago but the deal fell through. Maybe eventually So for the time being I'll remain a Bronica man :) As for the A7R III comparison, I wanted to give people a look at two high megapixel cameras to attempt to display the practical differences in sensor size. Secondly, and more importantly for me, I wanted to give the viewers a chance to see how a much more obtainable camera/lens system would compare to the 907X and it's lens. Seeing as the Helios 44-2 came from eBay for around $50 and my camera also from eBay at well under $2000, I thought it would be interesting to see the differences when compared to an $8000 camera system. More of a quick and dirty test, definitely nothing technical beyond the visuals. I appreciate your thoughts on this and thanks for taking the time to comment.

@@AdamWelch Thank you for your detailed reply! Sadly I didn't get any notification about it, that why it took me so long to reply as well! :) Unless I'm mistaken Hasselblad uses the same Sony sensor as in the Pentax 645Z, GFX 50S, GFX 50R, X1D, X1DII and the PhaseOne IQ 50MP backs. So they're pretty much forced to go along with the 4:3 sensor dimensions. You see the advantage of the 6x6 square sensor is that it does not have an 'orientation', there's no horizontal or vertical so you never have to turn the camera. That was one of the key points of the whole V-system - and if you used a 645 back you pretty much had to get a prism viewfinder, otherwise it's extremely awkward to shoot in a vertical orientation, especially handheld while focusing. Due to its slightly forward tilted fixed screen and a lack of viewfinder the 907X has inherited the same awkwardness but with its handling it's even more awkward to shoot handheld in a vertical orientation. You're absolutely right, it's not unusual to use a 645 back on a Hasselblad camera, I've done that myself numerous times while I had my 503CW - however the sensor of the 907X 50C is noticeably smaller than a 645 film. While the 80mm Planar is pretty much the standard lens for a 645 (and 6x6) back, it's definitely too long for a 1,27 crop sensor and the whole camera simply feels "too big" for its sensor. That's been a problem before with the older backs as well, to my knowledge PhaseOne was the only company that supplied 'full frame' 645 backs for Hasselblad but the last ones were the 60MP CCD backs like the P65+ and maybe an IQ160 (though I'm not too sure about that). I understand what you were trying to do with the Sony/Helios combo, though it would have been much more interesting to see the differences at wider apertures (for example 2.8 vs 3.5 or so) because when you close them down to f8 or f11 it's really not going to matter as much - unless you also use an equivalent focal length and you keep the same perspective. But using a wider angle lens on the Hasselblad and a rather long standard lens on the Sony is a bit... hard to put in context.

I am wondered that photographists add soviet lens to modern technic. For a guy from Ukraine it looks not just weird. When you notice that little less than all soviet invetions are stolen from Japan, USA or other civilised countries. It feels like pretty essetial kind of perversion. In my opinion, pics from helios lens have overcolded non-natural colours. Hasselblad pics are more natural, it represent falling of light as it must be on a sunny day.

Naturally, someone would have to be either stupid or foolish not to understand your attitude towards Russia given your nationality. However, I disagree with at least the logic that the Helios being a copy of the Biotar (Zeiss) is a perversion, especially when comparing their place of manufacture to "civilized" nations like the United States and Japan. Both countries (and virtually all established nations) have committed acts equally as horrible as any other nations (US citizen here) throughout history. If you don't like the characteristics of the Helios 44-2, perfectly fine. It's not for everyone. That being said, to imply it is subpar simply because it's Russian and a copy of another design based on another lens is not cricket in my opinion. Zeiss, the maker of the lens the Helios 44-2 is based...is a German company.... I don't think I need to remind anyone of the historical actions of that nation but do I feel that bears any relevance to the people of Germany today, or the lenses the company produces? Of course not.
