Hey guys and gals. After the dealership replaced the water pump on our 2018 Silverado due to a premature failure (only 68k miles?? Come on GM...), the service advisor recommended a coolant flush - to the tune of nearly $300. After picking my jaw up off the floor I politely declined, and told her I'd take care of it myself.
Now, when the water pump failed, it rapidly jettisoned about 90% of the coolant in the system onto the ground. The dealership refilled the coolant when they replaced the pump, so I wasn't too concerned about debris in the system. That being said, rather than flushing a bunch of brand new coolant out of the truck, I decided to add a simple filtration system that uses a replaceable spin-on filter that you can buy at any auto parts store in the country. The install is very simple, the results are low profile and relatively hidden, and it gives me peace of mind knowing that any junk left over from the old water pump will get filtered out - all for less than $100.
Let me know what you think in the comments! As always, if you have any questions please let me know and I'll do my best to get back to you.
Thanks for watching!
