This poor lady shouldn’t be on TLC. She should be getting psychiatric help. She’s clearly not all there at the moment, and I’d hate to think of how she’d spiral if she ran out of ashes. This is clearly obsession, but far different from collecting dolls or clowns or even the dude who was in love with his car. She’s not processing her grief properly. I’ll admit I watch My Strange Addictions, but this episode made me feel gross. Like I wasn’t watching something to laugh at, I was watching a woman spiral and break in a way that felt far too personal to be casual entertainment.

My step-grandmother did this. She sprinkled my grandfather's ashes on her breakfast cereal every morning. We all felt really weird about it. I don't understand why she told my mother she was doing that. It's one thing to confide in a friend and another to tell the dead person's child, "Bye the way, I'm eating your father."

I feel like nobody told her about the memorial necklaces you can have made that use ashes and press them into a diamond, or she could have him made into tattoo ink and get a tattoo to remember him by so he’s always there by her. I hope she got help for this, definitely feels like some form of disordered eating and psychiatric issue

Eating him is keeping him even closer technically. I can see how a person undergoing extreme grieving would do this, but this demands extreme therapy.

I can sympathize with her a lot. Grief is a horrible and terrible thing that everyone has either already experienced or will experience at some point in their lives. I think that this woman is currently so deep in the denial stage of her grief that she cannot let her husband go. I just feel awful for her. Honestly while eating the ashes is weird and gross (but honestly not as gross as one might think because there is literally no organic matter left) I just feel bad that instead of getting her help via a grief counselor and making sure that she is surrounded by people who love and care about her, she’s been turned into this meme almost of “oh my god people are weird”. I really hope that this woman got the help she needs and deserves.

As someone who has diagnosed episodes of psychosis, this may very well be her only option in her mind. She's likely to be experiencing hallucinations as well, like voices telling her to do it, she may hear the voice of her dead husband talking to her through the box, or she may think she smells his cologne again when she's eating him. She could be seeing full scale visual hallucinations with her husband sitting next to her as she eats the ashes, feeling the touch of his arm around her shoulder. Psychosis, in it's definition, emphasizes the fact that there is a clear disconnect between fiction and reality- she might not even be fully conscious while doing this, in a fugue state just doing what feels "normal" to her. It must've been awful slipping more and more into a delusional state as your only coping mechanism is the one actively chemically adding to your psychosis. Episodes of psychosis are also often linked to crimes that involve the killing of close friends/family members because of the belief that they are evil clones and must be killed to get the "real" version back. I'm glad she didn't hurt anyone or herself (aside from the chemical and emotional damage). I feel especially upset because the daughter confided in her mother about her mental state and actions, and instead of getting medical help, they decided to call TLC. That's not cool, and neither is eating your dead husband's ashes.

There’s an actual disorder where people eat things like, dirt, foam, rocks etc. Usually do to some sort of deficiency and your brain kinda goes wack and starts eating whatever. (Not in all cases but it happens) so at this point it’s just out of her control and I feel kinda bad for her…

The remains aren’t truly “ashes”; they are bones that have been ground up. All of the flesh gets completely incinerated when getting cremated. Nothing is left but bones and surgical implants/devices. That can’t be good for her insides.

Fun but not so fun fact(?): Cannibalism is actually legal in most states in America. It only becomes illegal if you kill the person which is murder. So technically, you could try human at anytime without getting in legal trouble depending on where you live. (Of course, you have to keep in mind that many states try and make it impossible for people to eat others, even if theirs still loopholes. )

Ritualistic cannibalism is actually common amongst many indigenous ppl. I think it's important to remember, if that's what the dead person wanted, and what their loved ones left behind want, I think that's fine. I think there are health concerns when brains are consumed, but otherwise, cannibalism is one of the practices I judge using cultural relativism. No one is physically being harmed, so it's just a question of what the dead and their family want.

Seems like a combination of intense grief, some mental instability.. and also paired with the chemicals in the ashes taking some of the pain of reality away and becoming accidentally addictive.
