You are lucky, because these engines had a terrible failures at the cam shafts , because of the very badly-Wrongly designed oil system/lubrication of the cam shafts, which caused terrible engine damages. But, at least, it could be fixed. I did fix it on my Vf in 1996, and this year i am repairing another VF, but this time i will fix it even Better , by boring the cam chaft caps, for additonal oil channels, while i close all other oil holes in all cam-shafts. Pwy.

Such a cool bike.. My first big bike in 1990 was a VF400F. I also had a VF500FII a few years later. Coming straight from a 2T Honda NS125F as a learner to the VF400F was incredible. I remember the journey home after picking it up from the dealers as clear as day!

Back in the 80s, here in NZ, you could get your license at 15, and learners were restricted to 250cc. My first road bike (i'd had dirt bikes for years) was a Kawasaki KR250 tandem twin, great little bikes and faster than my mates RG250 Mk1 and way more trick than my other mates RZ250 YPVS😄 My first "big" bike was a VF500F a year later, a half faired, red & white one, we never got the fully faired F2 here. The handling on those VF500s was amazing, and they did well in production racing (unlike the 1000s). My one got written off when i was T boned at an intersection, Wish i could find a nice one now.

I had a second hand '84 VF1000F. I would never consider it a sportbike, it was a sports tourer. The riding position was the trade off for the narrow engine. The engine was narrow but that made it longer hence the stretched (but comfortable for long trips) riding position. The torque curve was amazing but presented some problems on a wet road with wheel spin even in a straight line, I went through several rear tires looking for one to tame it. It was a heavy bike and you had to ride it like one. I'll never forget the growl of that engine. I miss that bike

I bought my VF1000F new in Tweed heads NSW back in the mid 80s it was the blue 💙 colour it was one of my favourite bike's very smooth and quick for a sports tourer i road it regularly to Cairns and Townsville nth Queensland i regret selling her for the GPZ900 87 which I really didn't like so traded it on an FJ1200 later 80s which was very smooth reliable and fast im still riding an FJR Yamaha 1300 2012 which will probably outlive me i have many great memories of riding and cruising around Queensland and Australia on her

This engine gives you the best good vibes you search in a motorcycle. Had one. Miss it. Only issue, 16' front wheel models doesn't tell you exactly what is going on turns. But it is very stable.

Great review. Have the same VF1000 in the same colors. Still a beautiful motorcycle and it always makes people come and have a look at the motorcycle. Maintenance is certainly a very important thing, but with a motorcycle like this I automatically ensure that the maintenance is done properly and on time.

I Liked this review. A great test of a Great Bike. Back then I had a long test ride in one of these and came close to buying it. My ''sensible'' head won me over to a Kawasaki GT750 shaftie instead, which I really liked though. I am thinking right now that maybe I made the lesser choice then and that the VF1000 would have been the real deal.

I had a 84 VF500 when i was 17, only had it for 6 months until a myopic driver ran a red light and wrote it off. With the insurance money i bought a brand new GK71 GSX-R400, we were one of the few markets outside Japan that got the very first GSX-R's. It didn't have the quality of the VF500 it was more like a 4 stroke RZ350, all screaming revs, and light weight.

I saw a few negative comments here and I partly agree with them, but........using this bike nowadays means it's pretty tired. I got my first one in 1988. It was half a year old and I was 18 years old. After a lot of dirtbiking this was my first real streetbike after a few older ones. It was always a bit quirky, but you could work around it, if you got used to the bike and also had a bit of experience with, let's say, character. Unfortunately a drunk car driver totalled this bike after I rode it for half a year, pretty much every day, rain or shine, warm or cold. I found another one just last year, a real barn find...!!!! I'm the second owner of a 1988 Interceptor again. It had a little over 11.000 km on it, let's say around 7.000 miles and it looked awesome...!!! Everuthing was original, including factory stickers. Just missing a few reflectors. Exhausts were in great condition and so on. Several mechanics confirmed the low mileage and I made it up to todays standard as best as possible. I had modern tires put on, a Dynojet kit on the carbs, better brake pads en lines front and back and, very important, HyperPro suspension front and back, which you cannot see it's aftermarket stuff. The skittishness is gone now, especially at the front and it steers and holds how I want it in combination with a very responsive and pretty powerful engine. I cannot wait for spring...!!!!

I dont agree with your opinion on the fork tube stiffness. The front suspension was very good. The rear shock was OK. The rear tire was a bias ply 130 and was the weak spot of the handling. You could power slide the bike all day long exiting corners which made it fun to ride. It was just like superbike racing with sliding bias ply tires around the track and the street. For some that was a little scary but i liked it. The real shame was that Honda replaced all the cams with a different profile when they warranty the cam shafts due to pitting. Making the bike slower and took away the ability to wheelie on demand.

Thanks for a great video. I just got one of these and the starter died. I hear the starter motor is terrible with 2 brushes so apparently the vf750 starter motor is vastly superior with 4 brushes. Little tid bit. Also the cooling system is iffy at best. Can't sit in traffick or you're litteral toast! Been looking for better cooling fans. I'll flush the system first though. Otherwise it truly is an awesome bike! I believe you when you say it's fast! I'm gonna be nice to her though, she's old with 32,000 km. Thanks again for the awesome video, I might look into these mods you mentioned for the cams.

I never had a problem with mine in heavy traffic during Australian summers. Yes the thermo fans switched in and out frequently but that doesn't mean the engine is overheating. Keep up frequent 5000km (3000mi) oil changes with high quality oil and there isn't an issue.

My Dad bought the VF1000F new back in 85 I think. It looked awesome. He sold it after having the biggest tank slapper in his life, combined with fuelling issues in high summer with those banked carbs. It was swiftly replaced with a GPZ900R.
@uhtred7860
@uhtred7860 11 ай бұрын
The problem with the VF1000, was that the GPZ900R was a better sports bike, and the FJ1100/1200 was a better sports tourer, throw in the 750s cam issues, that tarred the other V fours with the same brush, and the Honda got over looked. Good bikes on their own, especially the touring Bol'D'or version But the buying public bought more of the other manufacturers offerings.

IV owned all those model bike's kept swapping from the Honda VF1000 86 to the Kawasaki and eventually the FJ 1200 probably the best out of the lot they must be a very reliable smooth fast bulletproof bike' because I'm still riding a FJR 06 1300 shaft driven it's simply the best bike IV ever owned with 165 thousand kilometres on the clock I'm 65 in August and it will probably outlive me Yamaha have been making the XJ and FJ and FJR series for around 40 odd years they are just simply so reliable bulletproof smooth fast bike's money can buy IV seen many around with over 400kms and above on them as long as there serviced and maintained you wont have to many problems

I'm friends with one of the guys who won that race. (the other rider has unfortunately passed away) He bought and restored another VF1000 in the same colours.😄 I'm pretty sure the 900R didn't seize their brakes, but ran out of pad material and down to metal on metal, either way, they protested the win. The GPZ900R was quite a bit faster and handled better too, theres a video of the Aussie 84 6 hour, the one Richard Scott & Michael Dowson won on the Yamaha RZ500, and 900R's are blasting past the VF1000Fs with ease on the straight.

So do you think my 84 VF1000F will be a pain to get going again it was previously lasid over on the left side the fairings took most of the damage other than a little road rash on the engine cover on that side. But the guy bought the bike from his insurance after the crash but then never did anything with it. Its been setting in his moms graage since 1985 not long after the crash. Its really low miles as its only got 1400 some miles on it. The gas tank other than a dent on the left side is super clean inside as well. The carbs though seem to be very sticky so pretty sure they were left with fule in then and it has turned to the molasses like goo. Other than those few things the bike is untouched even still has stock exhaust with baffles still in the mufflers. Oh and the keys are nowhere to be found but i dod have a clear title. I was hoping that a good carb cleaning and some new rubber carb joints and definitely some.new tires as they are dryrot from setting so long and going low.

I bought the VF100F tjhe year it came out to replace my 900 Ducati. At that time it beat ANYTHING on the road and would ride London to St Tropez in a day. You say it's handling is mediocre. Yes, heavy and high, I had been riding Nortons and Ducatis, HOWEVER this bike took corners at 130+ Mph. As for 150 in a stright line no probloem. It was tall gerared and faster than the VF1000R top speed. OK it had two faulots. They put some kind of shock absorber on the clutch to protect it from the power. That meant it was sloppy at low speeds. Then the compstar wheels clickied a bit, that was not Honda perfection. Since then I have had VF750R and VF800Rs in the garage. One more beutiful the second a better all round bike,

Agree with better oil for the bike. New synthetic oils should help prevent the cam pitting but who knows. The one scary part of the bike is tha faster you ride it the lighter the front wheel gets making the bike skittish at speed. This makes the bike not handle hi speed corners very well. No one really tried to race this bike for good reason.

@@redryderaus They weren't exactly successful in production racing. The GPz900R won far more races. In the Southern Hemisphere, the hotbed of production racing inn the 70s and 80s they had very little success. They won the NZ 6 hour in 84, mainly due to the leading bike running out of pad material in the last laps, allowing the VF to slip past. In the Aussie 6 hour in 84 a VF1000R with GP rider Wayne Gardner drafted in to ride, it came 2nd. (He called it a big marshmallow on wheels) 😆That race is here on YT and you can see how much more pace and speed the 900R's had over the VF's down the straight.

I was an original owner of the 1984 VF100F here in the USA. I want to say that Honda Engineering really failed to properly design this bike properly in two very specific areas. One was the bad Cam Shaft hardened surfaces failed on my bike before 4,000 miles, as it failed on most all of the V4 Honda engines in that period. Secondly the weight distribution was wrong, which is why the tester commented on how the bike feels strange. THe bike feels different because of the 16” front wheel and because the engine was too far back in the frame, making the front end light. This made the bike uncomfortable at high speeds because the front wheel was barely touching the ground at the speeds this bike was capable of. Honda failed to properly test the bike prior to release and correct these issues. My bike was down for 7 months waiting for new Cams from Honda. I paid $5000 for that bike and was happy to get rid of it.

Here in NZ only the VF750s suffered from the cam pitting problems. Never saw a VF1000 engine fail from it, and the VF500s and 400s certainly never did. (That i saw) But the 750s problems nearly sunk the whole V Four engine range. They got it right with the 86 VFR750 Though.
