Adjusting the Choke on your classic Carburetor!

Today I'm tackling a small adjustment that can greatly impact how easy it is to enjoy your classic or carbureted vehicle. This is also not going into detail of other drivability issues that may be present and can have an impact into how well your classic starts and runs. Choke adjustment is easy to do as long as you keep a few things in mind and understand the components of the system.

Yep and they're still a good viable fuel mixer when tuned correctly! There's a lot of Carbs around the Snow Family Racing Garage!

@@SnowFamilyRacing I fiddled with them some, and found many of them to be quite finicky. I was glad to see better quality injectors appear. But now I have a Tesla. 😁

I can't get into EV's, they're not my thing. I find that Carbs are really easy to work with once the basic principles are well understood. They're only finicky when there's other things going wrong and can give you plenty of clues if you're paying attention.

I realize that many reading this have never owned a vehicle with a carburetor, possibly born after the last north American car was sold with one. I set them up so on a cool morning around 50° or 10C the choke is closed with a light spring tension. It will immediately kick down from the fast idle cam upon start up, and idle around 1200 rpm on the next cam step until the choke is fully open. This fast idle may last 3 -5 minutes driving with a light engine load. Adjustments and choke on times would vary depending on the state of the manifold heat riser, if the exhaust manifold stove and hose are intact, the air cleaner vacuum switch is operational, and if your motor will even idle with no choke after a 3 minute cold start.

I bought a new Q-Jet. It fired right up but won't idle. This new carb doesn't have the cold idle screw. (My old one does.) There is an adjustment screw under the choke. I adjusted this as well as the round coil as you mentioned. No real change. I'll hit it fresh tomorrow. Maybe bug my buddy to dink with it.

I just bought a 1986 Ford van, great engine. Just not enough throttle to keep her goin, gonna change the plugs and such and see what happpens

Fix the fuel line.....that is a real mouse set up that may cause leaks and a fire!!!

Put a switch to power on your choke if you don't have a choke pull off like the edelbrick

A seized throttle shaft generally means it needs to be disassembled, the hole oversized and a bushing installed. My Carb guy can easily accomplish that and set it up really sweet for your car. Velocity Racing Carbs contact info is at the bottom of the description of any of my Long Format videos.
