I recommend a bit of silicone where you used the tek screws to fix the roof, the rubber on the washer will perish fast on the Portuguese summer. From a Portuguese living in the UK, all the best and looking forward to the completion of the great job you're doing!

I wish I had done this sort of thing years ago. My daughter turned 16 last week and we have just started to look at properties in Portugal. It's nice to see a young couple from my neck of the woods making good over there. Strength to your arm :)

I would suggest that you put braces on the corners which will help prevent the structure racking, also maybe some braces noggins between the rafters well done , keep at it it’s all a process.

piece of advice: here in portugal we rely on neighbours for a bolt, a nut, anything really; if you think a no is garanteed you'll be pleasantly surprised how people go out of their way to help out. plus, we got plenty of nuts 🤣🤣🤣

The sheets should get their rigidity by running at 90 degrees to the supporting rafters (timber supports). The flat parts (valleys) of the roof sheet should be fully supported across the width of the sheet. You have lay the roof sheets parallel to the rafters and therefore the wrong way to do this. Sorry to have to tell you this. In future so you don't make potentially costly mistakes, ask for advice before you start the jobs. You may get away with leaving these as they are but I suspect they will start to sag in the middle of each sheet where they are unsupported. Just thinking you could add some battens under the roof sheets running in the opposite direction to the rafters. This will better support the lower corrugations in the middle of the sheet.

While it may spoil the wonderful lines of your roof, I would add some battens under the roof panels at least where the panels come together. A little extra support in case something stupid happens, even in the deep South we get snow every 6-7 years. I would also get some caulk and caulk the screws/bolts that had to go into the valley. Over time with expansion and contraction if they are not sealed they will leak. Overall, even with the mistake (NICE CATCH!) you guys are doing great! The structure itself is strong and should last a good long time! GREAT JOB! Will there be any walls on it? I would suggest at least a partial wall on the windward side. It will help keep rain from blowing in. Just an idea, you guys do you!

I still learn from my mistakes and I know you two will as well. The structure may need some angle bracing to stop any swaying as windy conditions could affect it. Great job so far Laura & Dan!! :)

I'm glad u decided to use thicker timbers. I see a few off grid living videos and a lot of people seem to use what appear to be timbers that u have to wonder about the integrity of them. It's all coming along nicely. An outdoor kitchen - u won't know yourself !!!

Food for thought (accidental pun) to help with shade and cooling off come summer time, I would recommend a shade cloth wall on the side that the wind comes from the most and then run misters or trickle irrigation along the top. The water runs done the shade cloth and the wind blows through to cool you down. Would definitely recommend some noggins to support your roofing sheets to help extend their life. Otherwise, well done guys 👏👌👍. I know in Australia, to help against termites and rotting, it's best if we seal the ends of the wood (encased in concrete) with some sort of bitumen or tar type paint. I don't know if you did this or looked into it?

Well done both of you it looks fantastic. Only one suggestion would like to make to you is the wood to roof sheets is the wrong way round the wood you screw to should go the length of the roof that way you can add mor screws as necessary. It is up to you if you wish to change it I know I would and the easiest way to do that is to get some 50 x 50mm wood the longest length of the roof 1 for each 600mm plus 1 so if the roof is 3 metres wide you would put a 50x50 at 0,60,120,180,240, and finally at 300cm or whatever your span is then screw the wood at each place it sits on wood then screw your roof sheets back on and you will have a better supported roof that will not sag and can be screwed to the 50x50 at more places if it flaps a bit with the wind. If you need any help drawing up what I mean please let me know and I’ll help where I can. Only wanting your place to last the time span.

Great job Laura and Dan.!!! One tip I would give is when installing the foundation is I would block off the back wall where the stove is going to be ( If you plan on putting in a stove that is.) with some stones, and on the other three sides I would add some thin but sturdy beams from the roof to the ground all the way around the other 3 sides of the outdoor kitchen, that way some screening can be attached later with a staple gun, with screen doors on the front and back for easy access. We did this for our outdoor kitchen, and it really minimized the bugs and mosquitos and how much stuff got blown around when it was rainy or windy, but it is looking good so far, I would LOVE to see longer videos in the future, I'd happily watch you guys build all day. And you are DEFINITELY going to want to put some screening up to block off the gap between the underside of the roof and the beams if you don't want birds nesting there in the future.

You should of run 1X3" boards across for winter support will stop them from bending down into the Ktchen. You put these boards about ever 24" apart the run from side to side. Peter

I would have added some 3 or 4 x 1 the other way from your joists to put the roofing onto. more support for where they lap over each other, and angle supports on each corner. Will you be fitting rain gutters and water storage at all.??

I have such an urge to leap into this lifestyle exactly like you've done! it really resonated with me when you mentioned working 12hr shifts and feeling this kind of hard work is more rewarding. i could spend all day everyday completing projects and tasks like this. I really want to get back to nature! For me, having less is having so much more. My issue is i have no idea where id go to do this as i have no connections anywhere else. Stukkyu is right. It is very weak. Just make a pile of them up on the rafters and do the cross bracing. One other thing. You don’t have to mix the cement with water. Just leave a couple inches at top and fill that with water. It will cure very hard because the less water you add to concrete the stronger it is. You should have gotten a lot more rock for your drive way. Oh to keep the roof from leaking. I would just add short supports between your rafters. If not you will need to fill ever hole that you could not put a screw back in. I admire your spirit. There are even video on UTUB about roofing. Later

Two things. You skipped a layer. Between your roof beams and the roof panels there should be purlins, or latillas, running perpendicular to the beams and about every two feet up the roof. 2X4 or 1X6 ,, even a good grade of 2X3 would work. The other item is more important. Each corner at your four posts require corner braces,, diagonals , 2 per corner,,, And on the flat you should have a diagonal brace screwed to the bottom of your rafters. The two at each corner post in the vertical planes keeps the building from swaying in the wind,, and the diagonal horizontal stops the parallelogram effect. (Open a box, cereal box, cardboard box,, and with the top open squeeze opposite corners to form the square or rectangle into a parallelogram.. Not good in a building)

The screws should be on the peaks so the water runs away from the hole made , screws in the valley are underwater .

It looks nice but I think the roof should have more of a pitch (slant ) to it for water run off.
