Power windows have been around for years. For this reason, power window vehicles are still up and running especially in places with low humidity where rust is not an issue. A power window system uses a DC motor to actuate the glass and open the door windows. The DC motor works in the nominal 2 to 5 Amp current range. For this reason, a relay has almost always been used to control the motor.
The basic motor operation is done by reversing the polarity of it's power and ground input. It is here where a properly connected window motor makes the whole arrangement worthwhile and stable. Although window motors come in various sizes, their nominal electric current range may go as high as 6 Amps, with peak voltages as much as 12 Amps if extreme resistance is found. Relays can deliver up to 40 Amps of power making them the best real world choice. Transistors have been used in the past and even on some new models, but they eventually falter and leave the driver to eat up the cost of replacement. This circuit connection is very useful due to the fact that many older vehicles can be re-wired using original or aftermarket parts, keeping the windows operational.
Here is how the window motor circuit works:
12 volt power is fed from the fuse to terminal 87 of the relay. This terminal then becomes the power input. Power is also fed to terminal 85 of the relay coil on both relays. Terminal 87A is connected directly to ground, so this terminal becomes the chassis ground input. Then, terminal 30 is wired directly to the window motor relay. Each relay feeds ......

Yes, a lot of these circuits can be used in part or as a whole to understand and diagnose today's vehicles. The idea is to show simplified versions that you can use now. In the even that manufacturers add other components such as transistors and diodes and a PC board it doesn't matter, the principle is the same. THanks for posting...

OK, good question, actually really good. Older vehicles had a cheap timer, similar to a flasher with a thermal contact or without. Newer systems are different. The windows module detect the inductive humps or loads every time the motor windings rotate. The moment the window reaches the top, no more inductive totational kicks (called inductive load) and the module deactivates the relay. It uses the same basic circuit above, relays are computer controlled.

Thanks for the video ,Subscribed !Very well explained and clear .I see that yoU have replied in assistance to comments from 9 years ago to as recently as 6 months ,so hopefully you can share some light on what I am trying to connect unsuccessfuly after a few attempts with relays etc..Its also something that no one seems to have asked ! Here goes....I have a car thar only has a electric window switch on drivers and passenger sides and I a trying to fit a second passenger side switch on drivers side .Basically I want a swicth paralel ,I think! I have passed the 2 motor wires from passenger to drivers side and connected it to an identical OE switch as the passengers side .Both switches are identical and simplle wiring.They have 4 pins for GROUND -+12v and 2 middle pins for the motor .These 2 pins have ground all the time and when the switch is pressed ,power is sent to the activate the motor up or down when current is inverted. This switch works perfectly but only if the switch on the passenger side is disconnecte!If both switches are connected ,this doesnt work and the wires to the motor pins heat up .However ,the passenger switch works .I am going to try your set up on this video ,see if works .Any help would be appreciated .,many thanks and keep up the excelente videos .Cheers

Somewhere somehow you need to download the plans for the switch you have. Otherwise you need to figure out what the pins are for. Each switch is different...

Hi, well as shown on the video all you do is invert the polarity to make the motor turn the opposite way. That's exactly what these relays do, they invert the polarity. You may have to watch the video a few times to understand the concept, most of the students that I've taught do. Does that make sense? Which part of the video didn't you understand? have question for you I have central lock along side window rollup module so when I lock the central triggers window do they rollup now I want roll down using another rollup module to roll down is it possible keeping rollup module

Thank you for the video! Very knowledgeable... I’m here in comments to ask kindly for guidance... Hello my fellow car enthusiast friends :) I’m diagnosing an issue with the passenger side window on my 2014 corolla, as well as the master panel on the driver side. The master panel only rolls down the driver window? It’s almost as if the window lock is stuck on, but as I sat in each seat and operated each switch individually, they all roll down, EXCEPT for the front passenger side... As of now, I’ve tested power to the master panel, it has power to all 4 switches (2front 2rear) all the switches are good... I’ve tested power (using multimeter as well as test light) to passenger side switch, as well as up and down operation. The new switch is good. Also tested motor making sure power comes from switch to the motor, new motor is all good. But window still won’t operate? Sooo I tested for good ground, and again no ground issues... Annnd sooo I ran a quick wire straight from my battery to the window motor, and it rolled my window up, yay :) I’m sure if I reverse polarity it’ll roll back down. So again, everything is good, so why won’t it work?This is not a riddle. May I please ask my fellow car enthusiasts for some advice? Input? I appreciate your time very much and if you have any questions as well, I’m moderately knowledgeable in some areas so feel free to ask and I’d be happy to help you out as well. Yes, the numbers are there purely for convention. The location is important because the wiring diagram is also linked in some way to the real world. But in actuality, if you knopw what you're doing then yes you can invert term 87 and 30. Good luck...

No, it has nothing to do with that. The motor generates some ripple or slight variations on the voltage. Alternators and generators also do this. In modern Body control modules, this ripple is used to sense and diagnose the windows motors or other motors. These motors draw between 6 to 15 Amps, not 40 Amps. They do have resistance and the resistance does not drop.

Good question, but you're better off wiring this circuit separately. There's a way to do this with only two relays, but it is a nightmare and not reliable. So if you have 4 windows you need 8 relays or 4 of this circuit. Good luck and follow the diagram and you'd be fine...Thanks for posting.

Just rewired my truck with just two switches located in a more central location and all the relays located under the dash. Much better and faster windows and only 2 wires going in and out of the doors.

What year & model truck? My 2001 S-10 is a piece of crap, and only 72,000. I have asked my Senators to get a law passed that all vehicle sold in the USA must be fixed up to 100,000 miles.

No, auto-up doesn't work with this circuit. Auto-Up or Down works with a small computer/module that reads the motor ripple as it is working. This is a more complicated circuit and defies the purpose of this circuit which is to give you power windows if you have none or can't find the parts anymore. Thanks.

What is that tell the engine that the glass is lifted or lowered maximum? What is it that stops the motor ? can we adjust it ?

serge garneau in most newer cars there is an Interior control module that detects the end travel of the windows and turns off the power to the window motor through the relay, or what ever switching system that they employ for control of the window motor. Normally, there aren't any adjustments, but if its not completing its travel the window regulator (the mechanical part that raises and lowers the window) might need cleaning or lubricating, or replacing.

go to an autopart store and buy a test lamp 12V with the ignition on test all the cables in your switch box driver side door panel, the one light up the test lamp follow it and cut it when you see it inside the car, search for a constant 12V wire or just re-wire one from your + battery terminal and connect it to the one from the switch box and nw you can roll up and down all the windows without a key but as i said before its under your risk

we have a 2002 Ford Thunderbird that has a problem with the driver's side power window. We just replaced the window motor, regulator, and switch, but the window goes only up. It went only down before the motor was replaced. The mechanic has decided it is a relay problem but does not know where the relays are located. Can you give us an idea?

Ann Breedlove you probably wired the kotor backwards, first. To trouble shoot the circuit use a volt meter to make sure the motor is getting power in one switch position, and not the other . Then have someone hold the switch in the position that the window doesn't work in use the volt meter to track which side of the motor isnt getting the power, track it back to the relays, or controller, you likely have a bad relay

Hi What I mean is, in car power window switch we have a button called auto when I press that button once window glass goes up, I don't need to hold the button, that's why it is called auto. The windows glass goes all the way to top and stop when it reached the end

What happens if you have auto up, so that the switch has two more positions. You then have the possibility of two +12v coming from both sides of the switch which could cause both relays to trip at the same time and give out two positives to the motor and no negative? Switch positions: up +12v and 0v up again +12 and +12v down 0v and +12v down again +12 and +12v Out

Cosmetiless uk NOPE! THAT IS NOT THE WAY THAT IT WORKS! THERE IS A LOT MORE TO THE AUTO CIRCUITS typically there is a microcontroller circuit involved and still only two relays

If just the listed items are in the book, then what I need isn't in there. I'm trying to hook up a 5 pin SWITCH. Its not just a relay. The terminals are numbered 1 through 5.

Damien Nicholas just what car are you talking about, on my 1987 bronco, the tailgate window has no relays it has 5 contacts on the switch and what is done with the relays in the schematic, of this video, is done mechanically in the switch it self with out relays, but the circuit as far as controlling the motor is identical.

does anyone one remember the aftermarket electric window system Harbor Freight use to sell, that you just removed the window crank handle and slid the box on and mounted it to you door panel? I have a nephew that had part of his left hand and arm taken off in an explosion. I'm trying to find him one of these motor boxes to help him with the window. It's a tad tough when he pulls up to any place he has to roll down the window. H.F. don't carry this box now, I was hoping someone new of another manufacturer that may produce this type add-on. He lives 300+ miles from me so I probably can't be there to install it. This is the easiest route I can think of, that he may be able to install. Any info will be greatly appreciated....Thanks P.C.

The strange thing is that now maker still use this relay arrangement, but the relays are soldered into the PC-Boards. The principle is the same and manufacturers are still sticking to relays on many applications. The use of solid state is also increasing, but it's not as reliable for motor and actuators. Injectors are different since they're activated for briefs periods of time as opposed the motors and high current devices.

ADPTraining Ford, vehicles have " safety " crush blocks built into the gear train of the motors in case some idiot gets their head or arm caught in the window as its going up..... or if some idiot keeps pressing the up or down switch after it has reached its end travel. I replaced the entire wiring using a remote fob, 2 40 A relays wired the same as your schematic, but i bought an arduino micro controller board for 3 bucks, a hall effect current detector, and added the circuit to the controlls when the rear glass reaches its ends the current exceeds 6 A and turns off the control to the 40A relay coil no more rebuild kits at $20 or $38 for the entire motor... it took me a couple hours to build the circuit, and write the code, but i wont have to disassemble the unit again

Rex Bahr it is on the "net", its on youtube what do you need a copy of? If its the schematic, just take a screen capture. If you want a 100k warranty, just buy one, if you get one from the dealer or manufacturer, its just going to cost more to buy up front. I have a warranty on my Mustang thats good to 123k miles, i bought it from my local ford dealer... and its a ford warranty. Please leave the government out of it, it would cost you 20 times as much and they would just fuck it up just look at obamacare, it has fucked up all medical in the US!

NO. In this setup the only grounds are at the relays.

Hello. Really appreciate if u can help me out. My car have two power windows. Driver(mainswitch) and pasanger. When i separately move up and down the windows, both working fine and fast. But, if move both spontaneously, the pasanger window will move slow. May i know what is the problem, and how can i fix that. Mitsubishi Lancer Coupe '95

What kind of switch can I use to run the motor continuous? I want to be able to reverse it too, Are you using 2 relays in the above explanation? Can I also run a pot to the circuit to control the speed? I want to power the lead screw of a metal lathe with a power window motor, using a battery charger as a power supply. Would a 121 volt battery charger, with 2 am output be enough to power the motor? Can you e mail a wiring diagram to me. anthony diodati NO YOU CAN'T USE A POT TO CONTROL THE SPEED, you need a PWM controler for that. FROM YOUR QUESTION it is obvious that you can not read a schematic if you could, you would recognize the two relays, that controlls the motor the manual switch chooses which relay is energised, thus selecting the direction of the motor.... do you really want your window to continuously go up and down? The motor will not last very long nor will the battery. You could accomplish what you want to do, but dont use a battery charger alone to drive your circuit typlically they have more ripple that would have a bad effect on your project. It seems at this point, you do not have the background knowledge in electronics to be successful with the project that you propose. Learn some basic electronics and your project will be simple for you.

Ilman Latif reversing the direction of the motor in this circuit is done with the relays most power window motors draw from 2 to 5 Amps at 12 VDC.

Say in theory would it be possible to wire a winch system that utilizes the quad switch or the master switch to operate the 4 motorized small winch same as the 4 windows. So there for if you turn the master switch on it would over ride the 4 motors and all 4 would operate simultaneously and then turn it off would give you independent control of 1234 correct 🤔🧐✍️🤔. So there for if you wire 4 sets of the quad switch you would have control of 16 mini winch system with a master switch right 🤔🧐✍️🤔🤔✍️✍️🤔🤔😱😀😎✅
