Advanced Boxing Footwork - The Stance Switch

www.myboxingcoa... - I consider the following boxing footwork drill to be something that an intermediate to advanced boxer should build into the skill set.
If you are a regular visitor to the site, and especially if you are a member of The Boxing Training Foundation, you will know that I am pretty fanatical about boxing footwork drills. My years of experience have taught me that they work like a charm and this drill is no different in it’s effectiveness.
When we talk about switching the stance in boxing, most people think purely about switching from orthodox to southpaw and vice versa. That is of course the most obvious stance switch and I will cover it in this video (well I will cover one method of doing it, as with most things in this wonderful world of boxing there are many ways to switch southpaw to orthodox.)
The boxing stance switch that I am going to demonstrate in the video is a very specific type of stance switch - it is a stance switch that is designed specifically for setting up massive hooks and uppercuts. After watching this video and working the drill yourself you will be switching and hitting in Mike Tyson style in no time at all :-)
I will demonstrate two stance switches:
Orthodox to Orthodox
Orthodox to Southpaw
Please post any questions or comments below the article. By the way, the video is 15 minutes long. I know this is a bit lengthy, but I wanted to make sure I got the right level of detail for you

Man this is huge. I've been playing with the stance switch for 5 days now and it's really cool how I can seemlessly find new angles. Also it made me realize why my right hooks and uppercuts never felt as useful as the left. Now I can actually close distance and right hook or whatever from the south paw stance. Very fun.

Dear Mr. Sands, thanks so much for taking the time! This is more than great. I'm an east-Londoner, living in the Middle East at the moment. Of course, boxing is an east-end tradition, and I regret not gettin into it sooner. My son though is a Prince Nas fanatic and loves boxing. Your vids are oasis in a dry desert. Love you and love the vids, please keep doing them. One day, I'll bring my son up to live in Sefton and train at your gym. He really wants to represent Britain in the Olympics like his heroes Amir Khan and AJ. Let's go champ!

It's a beautiful, beautiful tutorial. I've boxed and done muay thai 41 and 33 years respectively, I have never seen the switch so well explained by anyone. Beautiful. Believe it or not you can use the forearm and elbow in the way not allowed in boxing and the orthodox to orthodox sets up elbows and knees like hooks and uppercuts.

I wanna congratulate you for all your videos. They are all very useful and certainly help people who likes Boxing to improve even more. I wish I had a coach like you. I have been training boxe for almost 5 years and I had never done this kind of exercises. I mean every one should have all this background before going in a ring. I hope I can improve more watching all your videos. All movements you show are very useful and if well trained the person will be a good boxer. I just would like to see in the end of the video after all technical explanation how it should work in a real situation. I believe it could make easier to apply in a sparring. At least for me. But again congrats for all your videos. I hope you keep doing for a while. I hope I have the opportunitie to training with you one day.

Awesome vid sir! Always wondered how boxers (e.g Mike Tyson) switch stance because most tips that i found always say that you should never switch. Although I do have a question. When you switch from orthodox to southpaw, how do you move away from the opponent, assuming he's able to face you instantly, when your feet are in a different position? And a beginners question(Just started boxing 2 days ago), when you hook using your right hand in an orthodox position, does the left leg need to pivot? if so, at what direction? Many thanks to your awesome tips and videos. P.S. A partner in your videos might help understand how it works in a real fight. (No disrespect meant) Peace!
@myboxingcoach
@myboxingcoach 7 жыл бұрын
No worries, thanks very much. Given you've landed a solid lead hand hook (with the right hand) you could follow up with a back hand (left) and push away with a duck, taking you under any right hand counter from the opponent. There's a bunch of ways, do a bit of problem solving with it :-)

Probably your opponent will turn towards you. And you will be reseted in neutral. If you are reseted and your stance is reversed still. You can just, guard up and switch back, or dodge back and fix your stance to your common stance. Shoudlnt be much of a problem :)

AWESOME VIDEO!!! Question for the oroth to southpaw though: What would be the safest way to switch back to orthodox?

Cadre There are different ways depending on whether the opponent stays still or backs away. If static you could follow the left foot through after the back hand (left) hook. Just cover up and you can switch back in any way at all really.

hello.. it may not he relevant to the tutorial but just wanted to know how to fill a heavy bag with. i have seen numerouse videos over the internet but not something standarizing. if you could please do, that would be highly admired and appreciated. p.s. the tutorial was indeed very educating and credible in foot works.

Can you not do this video with a sparring partner to show live demonstration? Its a bit hard to follow when you mention orthodox to orthodox and southpaw to orthodox etc.

Dont think about what its called. Your opponent is the middle line. Do the switch, punch, and the probably your opponent will turn towards you and you will be reseted.

Hey there Fran, I just box for fitness but I feel I should show respect for the art. I find when I get tired I do all sorts of jumping and dancing to get inside the bag and get a jab in. I'm currently remedying this by getting the bag moving in circles then taking my time take a step in, contact and return. Is this the correct way to go about building this skill, if so, should I throw some side steps into the routine. Perhaps, side step, step in, jab, return; then repeat moving in the opposite direction? Thank you for the videos, I'll have them on blast tomorrow in the gym! J

There are lots of ways, but the key really is to keep the footwork nice and simple and definitely avoid bouncing!
