Charles Lamb was a WWII British Naval pilot who was also a boxer. In his book about the war, he briefly mentions the secret to his success as a boxer. He was tall and his number one move was jab and step to the right. Thanks for giving me a visual reference of how this works. I have struggled on my own trying to figure out how to make it flow. Now I know.

Great video JT, as a southpaw myself, I'm consistently told to keep my lead foot outside and that's all, it pretty much makes me one dimensional and predictable as a southpaw, but after watching guys like Floyd, Roy jones jr, manny pac, Connor mcgregor and rigondeaux work the inside angles in opposite stance, not following the conventional wisdom of what's taught, it's opened my eyes much more to being a southpaw and for the past week I was looking for videos and article discussing the inside angle, I found rarely anything but this so far is the best source I've come across so far on how to punch and move to the inside and create that angle for the rear. . I'm happy I've come across this. Thanks

Thanks for the great vid as usual. Moving right with the jab+stepover is unorthodox, something I haven't tried because I thought it was crossing over. Good explanation...and even better MC Hammer technique. An idea for a future video would be feints - how and when you like to mix them in, things you've found successful, etc. Thx JT

First off, love your videos. Secondly in reference to moving right and throwing. I have found that it's possible to step right AND snap the jab and it feel comfortable without "crossing" your legs. Where I came to this conclusion was thinking about jabbing from the orthodox position you usually step off with your left and spring from you right as you go forward or move left. With that in mind when I began to go right I would snap the jab and step right all in one without sacrificing any balance or change of footwork. I also still get that push off from my right foot which is my back foot all in smooth motion. I know it's better to demonstrate than explain but I very sure you understand me. Keep the videos coming brethren!

Don't waste your energy on gigantic movements. You're only dodging a fist. Don't forget to incorporate footwork while using headmovement. When you move your head moves with you. Try and get a fluid rhythm and momentum will do the rest tbh

Boxed on and off for 25 years (now coach) Whenever punching while moving to the right I've always pushed off the left foot to trigger the jab, and moved the right foot first. I tried moving my left foot first; and for the first minute of the drill "I thought this is ridiculous" (it felt really awkward). Then it just clicked, and felt real good. For the second round, I tried alternating between 'my style' (right foot first) and what was taught here (left foot first). I quickly realised the difference in power of the jab is significant between the two styles. 'My style' (moving the right foot first) seems to take power out of the shot (because you're moving away from the jab and squaring up the hips, whereas your style (moving the left foot first) naturally rotates the hips in the opposite direction (into the jab), while carrying a little body weight forward. Love it. Every day's a learning day. I'll be passing this on. Thank You.

Move the foot in the respective direction intended... in other words - step right with the right foot, step left with the left foot. Move forward with the front foot and step back with the rear foot. If you're a beginner you shouldn't try to move like the pros or you'll be in trouble. Just my opinion based on ring experience, thanks.

As a southpaw, I've found you need a much bigger angle when stepping your foot to the inside for it to be effective. Do you find the same when you step out to your right, or am I perhaps setting it up wrong?
@PrecisionBoxing

you're right, that's why it's a less common tactic, but if you can get the angle its very effective

JT Van V Gotcha, it's still a great technique, I love stepping inside and jabbing when orthodox fighters try to take the outside to discourage them from trying it. Ill work on stepping quickly to the side and angling off to throw the cross afterwards with the footwork you showed. Thanks for the video!

At my gym the coach is always making us drill jabs while moving right but he never gives any specific instructions or details,so I usually practice alternating between shifting by moving the right foot first and jabbing and angle cutting by moving the left foot first at a diagonal like in this video.

the left leg step is also the key to pivoting to the outside of an orthodox fighter eg I find the left leg step while slipping orthodox jab very effective for not backing away and setting up a pivot right hand counter at an awkward angle but not sure I like the left leg step for moving backwards to the right. it could leave you off balance against an orthodox pressure fighters gazelle left hook, but I guess it depends on distance and timing?

Hi JT - I love the thoroughness of your videos, thank you for the awesome content you produce. As I've focusing on punching while moving recently, I wish I saw this sooner. At this point, I've drilled my body into doing a right lateral step jab off a lead foot push since that naturally drives your momentum to the right. Could you share your thoughts on why you chose to use the back foot over the lead?
@PrecisionBoxing
@PrecisionBoxing 6 жыл бұрын
+O'Min Kwon it's hard to move forward pushing with the lead leg and going to the right. Back leg allows you to go more forward while moving right

Vertical fist on the jab makes since. Haven't seen that before. If i am doing a stronger pop in the jab, would you say turning the fist over gives a jab more power from the shoulder, as opposed to a vertical hand? Mostly a jab is used for distance and set up in which case sacrificing the power for a larger volume of cleaner jabs makes a lot of since. Great video btw.

Thank you so much Coach JT. It’s the southpaw boxer Jeff. I’m a faithful subscriber. Question: based on this tactic is it best for us southpaw boxers to move to our left (dominant side)? If so, this tactic has successfully worked for me in sparring because my orthodox (right-handed) opponents are not expecting it and because it’s unconventional. Also, this tactic works in many situations;however, in boxing we have to make adjustments on the fly. I believe the best answer for southpaw boxers, is to do what works best for us whether it’s moving to the left or right. I will just continue to do what throws my opponents off. I just have to mix it up and be unpredictable. Now, at the highest level, Pacquiao defeated Antonio Margarito, Brandon Rios, Sugar Shane Mosley, Adrien Broner, and Chris Algieri while moving to his left.
@PrecisionBoxing
@PrecisionBoxing 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly, the rules for southpaws are more so guidelines, but they can also become predictable patterns. Its important to break from the patterns and use what's working. The equivalent to this tactic for southpaws is to move to the left as you suggest. thx again for your comments and insight.

I tried the left foot first method but I’m always afraid of being countered as my stance becomes very bladed and it’s difficult to slip without losing balance, blocking feels weird too, back stepping feels easier though.
