The L-Step is actually 2 things, a swift way to disengage and re-enter at a slightly different angle and the quickest way to go square with distance between you and your opponent. 1 The first movement of an L step is to retract the lead foot taking you backward (away from your opponent) and into a square position. 2 If you use the L-step correctly with other Cuban footwork you will appreciate the evasive movement and swift acquisition of positioning that is available to you, during the lateral change of direction of the L-step. 3 The square position, as opposed to the stance, is the best for lateral movement and this is why it incorrectly becomes a habit because individuals feel comfortable pushing to the side in the Lstep for movement to the right. It should be used with cunning not consistently. Now, compromising base is inevitable in boxing, however you should never compromise balance. The 2 are completely different. Notice how you compromise base but not balance on a pivot (you are on one foot through a 90 degree angle - that single foot becomes your base). You can take your rear foot to the right but because your first movement is in the intended direction, from the stance position, you are more easily tracked by your opponent. The second movement in the L-step is the revealing step of the lateral movement and you are in the more favourable square position.
