Nestled among the multi-million-dollar business jets and high-performance turboprops at the NBAA static display in Las Vegas in October was something a little unusual... a motorglider.
Alexander Papenberg, CEO of Stemme USA, was showing off the Stemme S10-VT at NBAA for a simple reason. "Lots of corporate pilots fly from A to B IFR during the workday, and on weekends they want to fly a real airplane. They come here, they look at it, and fall in love."
And, Papenberg says, "it goes like hell. 140 knots at 10,000 feet on five gallons of gas ... and you can use mogas," he said. But the real beauty of the airplane is when you shut off the engine, close the nose dome, and become a high-performance glider with a 50-1 glide ratio.
The airplane will come off the ground in 675 feet and climb at 750 fpm. Along with the 140 powered cruise speed, the airplane "plays" as a glider between 90 and 145 knots. The Stemme easily makes the conversion between powered airplane and glider in flight. Papenberg says that it should be very familiar to anyone who is accustomed to flying a high-performance single.

To "Jeffray Walden". I'm afraid you don't know what you're talking about. Anyone who buys a motorglider is going to be VERY interested in the fuel consumption because that determines both how far you can ferry to a destination and how much you can use your engine to travel between good soaring areas. That's the whole purpose of buying a motorglider rather than a pure sailplane. $300-400k may seem like a lot, but keep in mind that a Cessna 172 trainer, and first plane for a lot of folks through the years, costs almost $500k now.

To "socommk233". You really shouldn't compare the Stemme S10 to the Windward Performance Sparrowhawk. The former is a motorglider and the latter is a straight sailplane. It's apples to oranges. But the S10 has an L/D ratio of 50:1. The Sparrowhawk is only 37:1, so the S10 beats it even as a pure sailplane. In addition, the S10 seats two and the Sparrowhawk only seats one. Are you sure you'd rather have the Sparrowhawk? :)

Someone please guide me. There are solar powered gliders that can take off and fly with only a few horsepower provided by solar cell and battery. Why is it that this motorglider need and engine that produces 115hp?

concerned for the drive shaft arrangement with the engine at the back and prop at the front. tollerances for its assembly. maintenance costs for such a system. vibration and noise. beautiful aircraft. but i wouldnt buy one. id prefer a windward performance sparrow hawk personaly.

awesome engineering but...no one cares about 5gph efficiency when they need to pay 300000+ to buy one. Ya it is in a class of its own for sure.....
