A thing about the angled up TT bars - together with the arms, they start to work kind of like an aero fairing, in combination with the helmet. So the slightly more upright position doesn’t matter much at all. You may want to speak with Ollie Bridgewood about this. He rides some of those and was in the wind tunnel a year back or so.

Nice video and I actually agree with the guy I think for 100% . When I changed my Tri bike, the new one had shorter krank arms. (Sorry for my English) , suddenly my hip problems was gone. I had blamed my running, but it was the bicycle. Comfortable is also important. If you can’t bicycle relaxed you will loose the power. Really good video.

Okay. I like. To say I have a TT bike that is one of two that exists in the world with a special feature. The other is in my garage. My TT bikes have suspension stems. The ar e less aerodynamic, weigh more and are set at +7 degrees so I can't get.down on the front end. But I can stay in aero all day regardless of road conditions. It even smooths out imperceptible vertical forces imparted by the pedalling techique. I've go 25mm tires but I feel like I am running 35mm tires at 45psi

Does Phil Burt even do bike fitting any more? Or does he make a living just by doing guest appearances in youtube videos? 😅 Seriously though, thanks Phil and Mark for a fascinating insight into balancing comfort, aero and power on the TT bike.

Changes to your setup might lead to your power increasing or decreasing; however, how you feel on a given day due to a good night’s sleep, being fresh, having drunk more coffee, or even just feeling motivated will have a greater affect on your power. Hence, I think it’s a good idea to make changes when you can make a fair comparison pre and post-change. Keeping a diary, even if it’s as basic as recording how you felt after a ride, helps us determine whether the changes I made to my setup are actually the cause of changes to my power output or not.

I go for Aero over power because now that I'm older and have been riding for 20 years, I can't put out the same power I used to when I was in my 20s. Although totally illegal for triathlon racing, my velomobile can cruise at around 25mph with around 150 watts (and that's loaded with lights, water, mirrors and regular tires, no race optimization)!

Interesting to hear that the saddle needs to go up when Mark’s already having to point his toes to reach the bottom of the pedal stroke; something which other expert bikefitters suggest is an indication of loss of hamstring control at the bottom of the stroke. Would be interested to understand Phil’s thoughts on the subject as there seems to be such contrasting opinions on the matter.

I have only done 3 Triathlons and In every one I wasn’t very Aero. When I’d get to an incline all them aero racers would slow down and I’d cruise around them. Then they would pass me on the down side. But it usually takes longer to climb a hill then go down it so eventually I’d end up being in front. I’ll take power because sometimes aero doesn’t matter as much.

Please read more on topic, you shouldn't say what you said to anyone until you understand aerodynamics. According to what you are saying I might as well ride a beach cruiser because I have power to spare.

I'm a mid-pack age-grouper, 6 ft tall, and I just did my first 70.3 this summer using a road bike. I did have a bike fitting when I began riding longer distances and that was helpful. But is it possible to actually be comfortable on a bike?!? I'm fine for 20-25 miles, but then my body just wants to get off the bike because it just feels uncomfortable. Is this just what long distance riders put up with?
@3Max

I'm not sure if being 6 ft affects it, but it's definitely possible to be comfortable on the bike, even for 56 miles. In fact, I don't know how many miles I need to go to become uncomfortable. For me, going from road bike (no fit) -> tri bike (with fit) made a huge difference in comfort level.

Since Pogacar has dropped down the crank lenght from 172,5 to 170 I think he has lost some power in the climbs. He pedals with more cadence in flats classics and climbs, but years ago like in the final TT when he won the Tour of France to Roglic, he seemed to have less cadence but more power in the climb, in fact he won 2 Tours with 172,5mm cranks. Jonas Vingegaard is running 172,5 and he is even a smaller rider 174 cm, and look how his knees go upper than Pogacar´s knees now. So I think that deppends of your style or riding as Jonas Vingegaars for example likes to have less cadence and going with more strength in comparison for example of Roglic who also goes with 170mm cranks but with a lot of cadence. I am saying that because nowadays it seems shorter cranks are better, but I dont thinks so, it is like a fashions, and it is not for everybody.. it depends of your riding style...
