The goal of this channel has always been to take the most empowering ideas and enhance them with art. Creating videos like this is my purpose on earth. When you find your purpose, nothing will stop you, because...the purpose is bigger than you. I don't care if I get paid to make these videos. The satisfaction of creating something like this exceeds any amount of fame or fortune. I hope you enjoy this and share it around. And I wish you all the best in finding your purpose.
Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 - 16 November 1973) was a British-American philosopher who interpreted and popularized Eastern philosophy for a Western audience. Watts proposed that Buddhism could be thought of as a form of psychotherapy and not a religion. His thought provoking lectures aim to answer life's greatest mysteries and are more relevant today than ever before.

in the least, I believe it gives us the opportunity to examine "now that I find myself in a position similar to how I envisioned my goal... *is* it what I genuinely want"? When I was put in that position, I answered "I really don't know; more like I think it's what I *thought* I wanted"

@@DarkAngelEU I've actually starting selling off a lot of material possessions I amassed over the years, realizing how little they genuinely mean to me; I'm not of course telling people they *have* to do this, but if they're going to...make sure those possessions are acquired for the right reasons, and not cause you feel "I'm supposed to have this for validation", or whatever. I'm still keeping a good chunk of them, but it is *so* freeing selling off what I am, I can't even describe it. Funny thing: so last year, I was doing a *lot* of overtime at work for a particular set of reasons, and as a result, my paychecks were like around twice as big as they normally are; and I would walk around utterly exhausted....and with such little desire to really spend almost any of it; I finally had a scenario to understand what it was like being financially loaded (even though I'm nowhere near close to that), and when I was officially put in a position where I could afford "whatever I wanted"....all my time working and amassing it...just didn't make blowing it worthwhile. I bought a few things here and there, but instead preferred to still go for deals and sales and clearance and whatnot; I enjoyed the challenge more of that than just buying whatever. Sure, all those people with tons of money have huge houses and exotic cars....and no time to spend *in* those houses or *driving* those cars, unless to impress some clients or something. Who the hell wants that?

I'm a big believer in pain and pleasure being "twins", in the sense that we can't have more of one without also having more of the other. Alan Watts and many others throughout history have written about this intertwining of pleasure and pain. Chasing pleasure always leads to pain. The solution is to give up on the idea of having lots of pleasure while being free from pain, because this is not how life works. Life starts to flow much more smoothly when you accept both sides equally. If you're interested, I've even spent 5 years writing a (free) book called The Sudist Way about what this all means and how to use these ideas to overcome chronic depression, anxiety, irritability, and chronic pain. Take care and be well.

I feel the same was both of you but I am 33 and have felt like the world just keeping turning and everyone keeps running around wide open for no REAL reason. Everyone is caught in the debt trap. Once you're in it, it's very hard to get out. I have always felt out of touch with what others call "reality" when really in MY reality, they're the crazy ones. I live for the moment. Right here and right now. I have never been more unhappy until I started planning for the future. I have had the fortunate opportunity to work for myself for the last 10 years and it has given me more insight to what I call the "REAL reality" as he explains in other presentations. The here and now. I have desires and I know what I need to do to be happy but it's not what the rest of the world consider normal. Taxes keep us chained to big brother and always having to make money only to pay the taxes. Being in the purposelessness of nature really helps me be one with myself. But in current society, having your own piece of nature to be naturally yourself, is quite expensive. So if you take a little bit of desire and mix it with today's society of needing money to buy nature and call it your own, it's very expensive. You may soon be caught up in the debt trap... very similar to a death trap... it's very easy to slip into so I would advise any young person to go be in nature and stay there by yourself for just 1 day. Go somewhere where you won't be found or discovered without a cell phone or any form of communication or entertainment and just be with nature and really enjoy the moments and see how you feel at the end of that day. Don't think about the past or future. Don't think at all. Just be with nature. It's very eye opening if you can truly admit to yourself while you're in the moment of how great and peaceful that very moment can be. Every day and every second that exact peace of mind can be found and enjoyed if you just stop running the race and stop thinking.

Don’t go to college/university simply to get a degree. Go there because you want to expand your knowledge in an area, because you will enjoy growing in that area throughout your life. And if studying isn’t for you, then it isn’t. Do something else and be better off for it. Edit: my experience: Was going to do a veterinary degree as this was the only option where you could make money with animals. However I realised that I didn’t want to be stuck in the rut Alan Watts is talking about. Instead I will hopefully be a badly paid but content conservationist, travelling the world and trying to give back by saving wildlife species at the same time. But otherwise...you start out with a clean slate (no student debt) and could have a tidy little side income, aside from what your jobs are actually paying. Lots of people love to follow that kind of content...with the added bonus, that you’ll have to deal with way less trolls and haters than most people on social media.

Wonderful comment, thank you for sharing. I know it will work out for you because you won't have to make any sacrifices you'll ultimately regret- plus you'll never regret not doing anything. I was recently berated for not wanting to go to college. I'm currently at an internship and a team lead told me that I was pretty good at what I do, despite not knowing much. He heavily emphasized that a degree was the only way of earning lots of money and having job security. However, upon thoughtful meditation, I have realized what Alan Watts expounded: life should be about enjoying it, not making money. I don't care how much money I make, as long as I get to do what I want to. That is the true definition of success, and getting there is a matter of perspective. Sorry for the rant and personal story, but thank you to those who dedicated their precious time to reading and liking my comment.

m not sure I agree with everything he's saying he kind of contradicts himself because at the start he says to go out and pursue the things that give you pleasure rather than money and then says to not pursue pleasure -- I think he means dont just pursue extrinsic pleasure but pursue the intrinsic pleasure of doing things you love - where the mere act of doing them makes you feel good. ie playing the piano. remember if it weren't for pleasure and pain will would not exist at all - the way we learn to do things it to pursue things that give an internal reward ie pleasure , happiness , socialising ect and avoid internal punishments e.g pain, sadness - both things are very important and necessary to live your life though as without pain you would not learn what not to do. remember internal rewards/pleasant sensations in the brain often come about from giving , acts of kindness and things that from the outside look like they are totally selfless acts. because we evolved in a social society so it was important for us to also enjoy acts of altruism

I have listened to a great many lessons taught by Alan, and have gleaned much from them, and gained a great many insights. But in this moment, for some reason, or purpose unbeknownst to my conscious thought, this touched me very deeply and profoundly. I began weeping at the epiphany that, I have accomplished a great many things in my life, which others would say make me “successful” or “accomplished”, or even “high-value”. I have what many would call a “perfect” life, or “wealth”. I just now, this moment, realized that I have never enjoyed any of it. I took no real satisfaction in what I’ve done or accomplished. I was always thinking three or four steps ahead, and looking to the future. Too preoccupied with the destination, rather than seeing I am here, now. I arrived many times over, yet always continued moving forward to the next “thing”. I haven’t really accomplished anything that has truly fulfilled me, or gave me true contentment. I have talents which I never nurtured or pursued, because I allowed so many people, although well-intentioned, to tell me who I am, and what’s important. What those things are that I SHOULD do, to have a “good” life. I have never once stopped and enjoyed those moments, or all that I have worked so hard for. I weep even now, because I realize, that truly, all any of us have, or possess, is this moment. I never have been “here, now”. I have wasted so many opportunities to be truly happy, and to experience real joy or beauty! To see each moment as a gift. I weep, not because I am sad, but because it really is all so SIMPLE. It is US who makes everything so damn complicated, with our incessant need to control everything. I wasn’t, or couldn’t possibly be, happy, because I was in a constant state of fear. I put so much pressure on myself to “achieve” or “be perfect”. It wasn’t my idea of happiness, but others ideas of what happiness is…. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Thank You!!!

About halfway through the project I envisioned the next project beyond this one in how I could make the next fence even better, but a strange thought came to mind, knowing that I know how to do the next did not create excitement, it created longing for figuring out what would be beyond that one. In other words, I realized that even though I hadn't even done the idea in the physical world, simply knowing how to do it made me feel as though I already had (a completely predictable future is the past). Work, school, work, school, work, school. No love. All toil and no happiness. It's a trap, and sadly some of us are stuck. Pleasure and Pain are two opposite sides of a coin. You can't have one without the other. The stronger the pleasure one experiences, the stronger will the pain be when you're in withdrawal from that pleasure. For examples, drugs and love: The stronger the love and the drugs, the more miserable you will get when the love and drugs are taken away from you. You could try to withdraw from the love or the drugs slowly, but then in the future, it will take stronger stimuli to give you the same pleasure that you've gotten before. Experienced too strong pleasure early in life and you won't be able to enjoy the same for the rest of your life. It is better to dole out pleasurable experiences gradually so that you can experience life to the fullest.

I'm so glad there was people like Watts to explain these things to people, especially in English. It's so imoortant and he's good with the language. I am so terrible at explaining my thoughts. He had a gift and he knew how to use ir. He gets his point and a meaning across so clearly. Such an important man.

On a certain level, we have Alan Watts in our brain, the neurochemicals that show up in flow: so dopamine, norepinephrine, anandamide, endorphins, and serotonin. If you were to try to cocktail the street drug version of that, right, you're trying to blend like heroin and speed and coke and acid and weed- and point is, you can't do it. It turns out the brain can cocktail all of 'em at once, which is why people will prefer flow to almost any experience on Earth. It's our favorite experience. It's the most addictive experience on Earth. Why? 'Cause it cocktails five or six of the largest pleasure drugs the brain can produce. We're all capable of so much more than we know. That is a commonality across the board. And one of the big reasons is we're all hardwired for flow, and flow is a massive amplification of what's possible for ourselves.

@@555tonyleon I'm in my early 40s and work in software development. I am not super wealthy or anything - don't want to give the wrong impression but I do well enough to provide a comfortable life for my wife and I. When I look at where I came from and compare it to where I am all I feel is gratitude. I think that gratitude may be the key truthfully, it's such a fulfilling feeling that it doesn't leave room for much else. My life is not "perfect" and would make a pretty unimpressive Instagram page but I've found that I don't care about the trappings of wealth. Life is about relationships and being someone you can be proud of. All the other stuff is just noise. My focus is just on always trying to be better and perfecting what I have. I give myself challenges and pursue them so that I am always tested. When I was younger that was all in athletics but now that I'm getting older I find I'm drawn to things like woodworking. I don't give much thought to what others have or what they are doing or how "cool" what I'm doing would seem to others.

I've had really rough childhood (i mean mentally). I was from somewhat "wealthier" family, and the whole village was jealous and despised us. We gain wealth recently, because my grandfather worked overseas, but never trough his life did he invest in something. Only kept spending money. Now 35 years later, we are slowly going bankrupt. My mother always put pressure on me telling me that if i dont succed in life, we will be poor, and it will be all my fault. Anyway, Because people from village hated us. I never had friends, and always was alone. But never hated anyone. I could've always ask for money, but never did. I always tried to earn money for myself. I could have easily driven some good car, spent tons of money in the clubs, be famous (around friends, you know the "cool" kid) but never found joy in it. Not even till this day i haven't met a person who didn't wish for at least one of these things (money/fame/hoes). And then i concluded that im weird. Im not normal (it doesn't matter if im right). To cut story short, since i was 10 i kept wondering what will make me happy, what is for me "happiness". Since my life was shit, i gavr up on it, BUT i made a pledge to sacrifice my life, in order to give everything to my child. I thought that in that way if my kid lives the way it wants, i wouldn't give two fucks that my life was miserable. I would've imagine:"Hey this could have been me, and i would be happy, just knowing that". But you won't believe what happened, for the first time in my life i knew what i wanted. I fell in love in this one girl. I've never felt like this, to any other girl that i liked. I love her eyes, her voice, her character, her looks... I just love HER like whole. I felt motivated to achieve anything in the world just for her. Unfortunately, when i confess to her, she refused me. In a way i wasn't suprise, i mean my whole life was shit, did i really think after all that time I will achieve happiness far greater than any sorrow i had trough my life!? But yea, it's been a year and a half since that. I distanced myself from her in order to forget her. I thought, meh what do i know im young, i will probably forget her as soon as i find some other girl. Ou boy was i wrong. I can't get her out of my head, every part of my body is telling me that probably she is the "one". The one i've been looking for. But then again, I would rather suffer my whole life, than to only thing i care about, force into being with me. As much as i am glad i met her, i regret every second i spent with her. If i didnt met her, i would've never knew what i was looking for. Never knew what could make me happy... If i didnt met her... I wouldn't know what i am missing. I wouldn't know i can never achieve my happines. We will see, like i say, im young, so it probably cant be that serious right? I will meet someone else. If not because she will be better, then at least because she will resemble her... God i love her so much...

I think its computer generated/animated. Which is still super cool haha but to their advantage there are templates for all types of things they can use & reuse all the time. Like general shapes, skeletal structure/blueprint outline type of stuff, like character dimensions, directional motions of the hand/marker when they're animating the drawing of particular things, outlines for buildings, trees, etc. things of the sort. And then all they have to do is to customize it to the context & carve out what they want from that original dimensional blueprint/outline template, to create the final outcome here. Which is pretty dope, I bet he/they have a lot of fun making this stuff!

Bojangles Ferguson to be content I would guess. To make the most out of everything you have now, to take the high road, to live sober, to love life. That’s not to say there aren’t good desires that won’t lead to trying to experience pleasure to the point the video shows. But we have to have passion in our endeavors. Not mindless activity. When you really work toward something that shares in helping others with your passion and selflessness, you will find yourself loving what you do more and more and eventually leave a legacy for others to follow.. it’s not about us. In some ways it has to be us because we are all limited to one body and one life, but we must be careful not to be selfish. The end of all desire means you are happy where you are in life and happy with what you are doing and happy with the people you are doing life with.

There's a balance to anything. Intrinsic reward and general kindness to oneself go a long way too. Mere discipline and delayed gratification lead to a life were you are in control of yourself (if fully realized), but are never living in the first place. I've lived like that. Looking back, only the times were I allowed myself to have fun were worth remembering. Of course, too much fun isn't it either. There is a balance to everything.

yes, but sometimes to get things you want, you have to do things you don't want. You cant do anything with your life if you are piss poor broke all the time. So you have to do things that are not enjoyable for money. The key is to defer gratification and don't go out and spend it on stupid entertainment and status. Save money until you have enough to start doing what you really want. As he correctly pointed out, almost anything can turn into income if you are really good at it. But it takes a long time, and you need to eat while you are doing that.

sometimes, due to life circumstances you are already in, perhaps its is best to save and then take the leap. but, he's right, you can certainly make money doing anything you love, and it's important to not put boxes and limitations around ourselves, as they're just beliefs not truth. like, it does not always and has not always taken a long time for people to start new things and immediately make money- there are overnight millionaires and I personally know plenty of people who finally stepped into their gifts and were immediately thriving. there are as many ways and stories as there are people on the planet. people are always surprising us by doing things we thought were impossible, because there really are no rules- just the one's we believe that keep us small and not living to our full potential. you're worthy of living your potential, empowered, continually freeing yourself, and living more and more in love and joy and giving so much to the world just by doing so. being the light you actually are. deep down, we know we are.

This is why I disagree with his point about doing what you would do if you didn't need money. You do need money. I think you should always consider what you're getting money for, because that's where people get really dissatisfied, when they're getting money for money's sake. Your goal should be to do what you would do if you didn't need money, but you have to get yourself there in reality with money. Like for me, if money were no object, I wouldn't monetize anything. I would screw around with my friends and just hang out with people all the time, but to get to the point where that's an option I need to have some way of getting money.
