Artisans do not have the 2 coin discount by default. My bad, Sam was clearly too polite to correct me at the time. I got confused clearly because id just played a game where i had the strongman apprentice with the discount.

I like this sort of expansion. It adds a bit of a different spice to the game, to give it more legs, rather than change it too much of over complicate it. I'll definitely use the start draft of apprentices anyway in future games. Good interview.

Love that you got Sam on to talk about the expansion. I love Architects and it was great to see the way Sam thinks and I look forward to hearing more from him on the podcast. I love the apprentice draft mechanic, but would you use it in the solo variant and how would that work?

Quick question I didn't understand, that starting artisan you pick from the pool or random from the deck?

From the 8 face up ones. Then replace them once all players have picked.

Artisans and Paladins has been on my "to buy" list for some time, having watched your top video I have just ordered on-line (not from tax avoiding Amazon which I never use). That was such a good review with your main man Sam!

Amazon charges taxes now, has for quite a while.

@@hairydongle8054 Oh, I thought you meant because they don't charge taxes on the purchases, which used to be the case. But yeah, all big corporations are tax dodgers, they hire the "best" lawyers to find all of the loopholes.

Where did you hear/read of your second-mentioned artisan power (reduce the cost of using an area by 2 silver)? After reading through the rules I've seen no mention of this power. Did you confuse it with the strongman apprentice ability?

Yep, turns out i did. Had the ability in the first game i played with it and clearly it just fused in my brain. Surprised Sam didnt correct me (he is quite polite)

@@3MBG I was gonna say - I made this comment before finishing the video and saw Sam essentially confirm this as a rule when you discussed it... I was wondering if I had missed something or if maybe it was a prototype rule that had been changed. Anyway, easy mistake. Cheers!

How would that work in the solo game? I just get to choose an apprentice from the 8 as part of my first turn? Or does it overpower the solo game?

Thanks for the overview and interview. My question to the designer would be if they can release a premium box that we can buy so I can hold the base game and the expansion together in one box? A longer box would be ideal. Why did they keep the same size box for this, paladins, etc when it can hardly fit the base game, let alone any expansions?

Good questions, my theory is economy and the environment. Smaller boxes take less space, especially coming from New Zealand to the rest of the world. Deluxe boxes are very much a waste from my point of view. I have Artisans and the core in the same box personally. Seems to fit, but i bin inserts.

12 buildings and 12 apprentices, and i think 24 tools. So 48 of the bigger ones. Not sure off hand about the small cards. Not many

I really liked this game, but I don't like it as much with 2 and that's the player count I'd be able to play it at the most.

We played 2 player last night and I have to agree the game is at its weakest at 2

@@3MBG Since I've only played it at 2 this is encouraging for me. My typical player count is either 2 (my wife and me) or 6 (our full gaming group). We liked it at 2, will have to pick up the expansion and try it with 6.

I've played the game 25 times now. Does it need an expansion? No. Should it get one to make it even better or deeper? Heck yeah.

Hahahaha, well if you want to know more about him, his name is Carl von Clausewitz and he is the founder of modern strategic thought and one of the first wargamers. Dude was playing board games and thinking about strategy back in the 1800s.

The expansion looks too expensive to me. Looking at what it adds vs price - I'd better skip. As a side note - I find the base game not expensive. But the expansion price is from 63 to 74% of the base game price in my local stores. -Picking the apprentice - sounds good, can be played in the base game without buying the expansion. -Discarding Apprentices in the left-most column on the Main Board - can be played without the expansion. -Artisan meeple - just borrow the meeples of the same color from another game. -Sixth player - well, zero value to me. The rest of the stuff is interesting, but not for >=63% :) I can pay, but will prefer to spend this money to buy some other game.

Expansions, in general, tend to be less value for money. Smaller print runs for the most part.

@@3MBG Absolutely agree. The wonder is that in these cruel circumstances some expansions still manage to sound much more attractive than others ;)
