I've played this game dozens of times, but I can still barely get more than 50 points during solo plays, so I've been looking at strategy guides. I think I might get too many occupations... By the end, I'll usually have four occupations, and they don't give me any points. I also seem to end up with too much food. So I seem to go too hard for making a food engine. However, I'll keep your tips in mind on the next play through!

Absolutely correct on initially focusing on growth; the player who ends up taking the most actions in the game will most likely win the game. Not always, but usually. You don't have to grow first, but you assuredly don't want to dawdle. As for card play, the best rule of thumb is "play the cards; don't let the cards play you." You must evaluate the probable return of each card to determine if it's worth playing in the first place. As you say, prioritize! Nicely done, sir!

1.Upgrade to a clay hut on 3 or 4 rooms do not build all 5 in wood as there won't then be enough wood for fences and stables. 2. Always try to have enough wood to build at least one stable the first time you build a room. I very rarely go to the build room space with only 5 wood. Stables means you can now keep at least 2 animals which you can keep to breed later or you can slaughter if neccessary. Plus with just 6 fences you can keep 8 of one animal plus one in your house. Extra points too come game end and late game adding stables will be more of a pain. 3. Keep track of the cards which are op and which didn't really work. Market woman, seasonal worker, anything that gives vegetables, all of the fushing net ones that give you extra food plus spices are all game winners for me, every time. Cards like medicant I have never used and seems pointless. Forester seems great but I never win with it. So play what you know is powerful or that you know exactly how it works. Ignore what you haven't been able to work even if it seems good. 4. Try to always have prerequisites ready before going to the expand family or other space that gives 2 actions. Prepare a small improvment to play before even going to the grow family space. So often in my first few gsmes I would grow my family and then realize that I should have picked up a few wood first for example. 5. Playing the AI like on tablet whatever take animals even just 1 or 2. It is anoying but the AI will take all of the animals instantly. Same for wood. Even if isn't many say 2 or3 don't wait for it to get to say 6 or 9 because it rarely will. The less the number of players the more patient you can be. Solo or 2 player you can wait for a bigger pile before taking it.

I always go the burn vegetables route as those cards are more flexible you can burn animals wheat or vegetables. 4 clay gets you 3 food for every veg you burn and 3 each wheat you bake or 2 each sheep. I never buy the ovens as you can only profit from wheat not the other things plus they cost 2 resource types but the cooking hearth or pot only clay. Justva personal preference though. I almost never bother with anything else except near the end just for bonus points. Potter only if there is plenty clay or cards that give me clay. Never the well or basket maker or others like that. Simple cooking pot or hearth and veg whenever I can.

It definitely does. Feels like right when your engine is finally functional, the game is over and it's time to tally up points.

Which is as it should be. It's really an engine-building game rather than an engine-running game. Think of it as *proving* you can survive. Then you can play Caverna and pile up the points! ;)

While it's absolutely true that getting the first room and first growth generally correlates with winning, it's also true that setting up a food engine and getting materials for room building are usually mutually exclusive. Strong players will punish a player who grows their family too quickly by denying that player opportunities for food. Strong players will also punish a player who focuses too much on food by not letting them grow (and get extra actions) until very late in the game. This tension, especially in the 4-player game, is what makes Agricola so appealing to strategy gamers, I think.

That's what I love about Agricola. You need to be balancing many different priorities without going too extreme into food or growing. A player can take first family growth and then use the extra member to ramp up on food, but like you say, if they focus too much on growth, other players can wipe out food opportunities and leave the growing player begging for scraps.

I hate 4 player. You want to do so much but everyone does so little because you all block each other and end up with part farms. I love 3 player that is the best. You feel like there are enough resources to all get around the 40 point mark with something of everything. Against the ai at least you can say goodbye to animals in a 4 player game. So anoying.

This is really helpful - I like Agricola a lot but I'm not very good at it. Gonna keep trying though, thanks for the advice!

Thanks for this! I'm a total newbie in the board game world, and as an introduction to worker placement games, I bought the app for Agricola on my tablet, and I can't get the required 50 points to make it past the first stage of the solo campaign! I'm learning this may not have been the gentlest intro to this genre of the game, hehe....

Another thing is to prioritize drafting lower-cost minor improvements so that the starting player minor improvement action isn't wasted when jockeying for initiative.

@@CreightonBrown I like Agricola much more than Caverna as well. Every game is unique because of the set of occupations and minor improvements you get, it forces you to try different strategies. Also Agricola is tough, a game of scarcity and scrambling to feed your family short term and work towards your long term goal. Caverna is more lax, and analysis paralyis prone when trying to figure out what crazy combination gives you most points.

This was the most difficult game to ever learn for me and I have an entire closet wall full of games. The instructions are far too long and cumbersome so I had to go online years ago just to watch some video totorials. With that in mind it's a great game and I play the single-player variant all the time when no one else is available!
