Aida-X and MOD Dwarf: is this a game changer solution? Better than NAM and ToneX?

Let’s say that I want the possibility to create profiles of my amps for free, using neural networks like NAM, with a nice free plugin that I want to use in my computer. But I also want the possibility to load these profiles in a stomp box, like the ToneX. And, why not, I want also a lot of effects at my disposal. Does something like this actually exist at all? Yes: MOD Dwarf plus AIDA-X

Update: under user's pressure, Mod has released a NAM plugin (LV2) for the Mod Dwarf/DuoX. The great news is that Mod is officially collaborating with NAM, not only for NAM's integration and usability of Wavenet files in the Mod ecosystem, but also to have the availability for MOD users to upload GRU and LSMT files created with AidaX into NAM's central ToneHunt centralized ressource. It's likely that NAM and AidaX will become a single super amp tone capture trainer/loader in the future. And everything is open source!!! MOD GUI, NAM... amazing! The NAM plugin is a lighter version of NAM's desktop version, as it does not have an EQ and requires lightweight 'nanocapture' files (aka lighter tone capture Wavenet files), otherwise the Dwarf's CPU can't handle it - as expected. And even then, a single 'NAM nanocapture' uses ~70% of Dwarf's CPU... so one can't add a lot more in terms of effects once NAM and a cab IR are active on the Dwarf. That said, they are working on a twist that would use only ~35% of the CPU, allowing for more effects to be added. That said, it terms of capability... it's exactly what people wanted ToneX to be.... Like ToneX, it now have awesome amp tone capture + IRs loader. Unlike ToneX, Dwarf adds a huge panel of effects, that ToneX is missing (since ToneX pedal cannot carry Amplitube effect). Now the Dwarf is the next gen Beebo, in full effect. One only has to hope that the next pedal by MOD will be a Dwarf with the processing power of a DuoX.

For me the Dwarf is a game changer. I have two of them and use then in a chain. My pedalboard is as big as a sheet of paper, absolutely transportable in my guitar bag and costs not more than 1.000 Euros. The Dwarf gives me possibilities that I never had before. The wiring of the pedalboards is totally free, thus, you can form the sound like in no other hardware. I sing and play guitar or mandoline in parallel through the Dwarf. I cannot hear the latency, sorry. I am not sure if anybody can, to be honest. I never had that much fun with another hardware and I tested a lot of multieffects in the last few years, line6 and all other well known brands included. The number of plugins is constantly growing. It is hundreds meanwhile. And on top you now get the modelling. I now sold my amp, even less to be transported for a gig. And all this in that tiny and unbreakable box. For me the Dwarf is the best device on the market, especially for 500 Euros!

It's good to see that a company is taking the important steps to put all the critical features into a portable hardware unit. Being permanently tied to using a computer is something I'd like to avoid. What is the latency in the hardware unit when not connected to a computer? For me, 5-6ms or longer starts to interfere with my playing and experience. It would useful if they upgrade the hardware to include and Effects Loop, and Jacks to connect an Expression Pedal and additional stomp buttons. The HX Stomp is a good example of getting a lot of design features right. The ability to load Neural Captures from other units/software is something that would make this unit much more attractive. Is "Tone Matching" the effect an end user's guitar has on the resulting tone, essentially sidestepped by using these Neural-type devices? Very informative video, and I look forward to learning more about this unit and your videos. Thanks
@LeoGibsonGtr
@LeoGibsonGtr Жыл бұрын
Hi, the way NAM and AIDA create profiles is based upon neural networks. I would't say that it is like the tone matching feature that for instance is available in Fractal or Positive Grid (as far as I remember)...that technique tries to match the eq curve, where the neural network technique create a neural net aimed to copy the amp. As regards latency, you can find my findings in the dedicated section of the video (you can check out the exact time stamp in the description of the video). I do agree, as regards foot switches and I / O...that would enhance even further the features of the Dwarf Thank you!

The MOD Dwarf actually runs an ARM64 build of headless Linux, and that GUI he keeps showing is the web remote interface. Everything as far as configuration goes on the MOD is done via a remote connection that you control with an HTML5 webpage/web server accessible over ethernet or Wi-Fi. All the plugins it loads locally or downloads from their appstore is in LV2 format, which is basically LADSPA ver.2 and was developed first on Linux, with Mac and Linux only getting LV2 support recently, and DAW's like Reaper only adding support on any platform in late 2020/early 2021.

Regarding the external effects loop, as the Dwarf has got two inputs and two outputs, and arbitrary routing between them, you can perfectly insert your own physical pedals between output 1 and input 2 (for instance), and insert whatever effects you want before and after your physical signal chain (and use all the criss-crossing signal path you want in between)

Hi Alex, let me add that, in my opinion, the point is to take into consideration the whole latency of your system. For instance if you have a wireless tramitter, latency sum up, if you use a digital pedalboard, latency sum up, if you are far away from your system, latency sum up. Therefore the total amount of latency could impact your playing. That's for saying that in my opinion you have to take into consideration the overall latency of your entire system. Thank you!

I think NAM should adopt the docker solution, since working with Anaconda is actually a much bigger barrier that requires a lot more finicky details that most users don't want to go through. What do you mean by an "external effect loop"? The Dwarf has stereo i/o, so you could run your external effects through the secondary channels (this of course does add latency, but I don't see how an "external effect loop" would not do the same). In regards to latency: I think you are all sitting in a tiny room right next to your amp. Once you go to a real studio or stage the difference in latency is negligible since the distance traveled from the speaker to your ears accounts for most of the latency you will experience in these "real life" settings. (8ms equals about 3meters distance traveled for sound)
@LeoGibsonGtr
@LeoGibsonGtr Жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you for sharing...Actually I have learnt Anaconda, I found it pretty easy and I have not experienced any problem using it. Maybe the docker is better...but I think that many guitarists have learnt Anaconda and with AIDA they are required to learn a new process...Considering the diffusion and success so far of NAM, I think it's a missing opportunity. I love stereo choruses and I want to put my Seymour Duncan Catalina after the Dwarf amp but before the Dwarf delays and reverb: is there a way to do it? Thanks!
@_DRMR_
@_DRMR_ Жыл бұрын
@@LeoGibsonGtr No, the dwarf has stereo i/o and that's it (potentially a class-compliant USB sound-card could be used to add i/o in the future, but at the moment this is not possible). Beebo/Digit has quad i/o, but the general latency is much higher there I believe. I don't understand why you think that two completely different AI software programs should have the exact same process and workflow. They don't work the same so the process isn't the same. Btw there is some work done on getting NAM models converted to AIDA-X, so this could help people to reuse some of their work for AIDA-X.
@LeoGibsonGtr
@LeoGibsonGtr Жыл бұрын
NAM has gained a lot of attention and there are many guitarists that have learnt how to train amps using anaconda, etc....I simply think that if AIDA uses the same environment, it could attract a bigger public. For instance, let's take myself as an example: I have installed NAM using anaconda, but this environment does not work for AIDA...so I have to check out a docker software, install it, learn a little bit about it, etc...it's a barrier...
@_DRMR_
@_DRMR_ Жыл бұрын
@@LeoGibsonGtr Except it doesn't make sense to use "the same environment" since the procedure is completely different. From a developer perspective it would likely break things more than being useful.

We're working on a Conda environment, however there would be one env of NAM and one env for AIDA. I've generated the env from inside our torch container and I'm disappointed by results, I end up with a huge env with lot of packages or a very small one which would probably fail to meet the deps. Although by trial and error we could achieve this Conda env working for AIDA, still I'm disappointed the exact torch version seems not to be tracked in the Conda file. Also for NAM situation looks the same

In my opinion, the point here is that latency sum up...Your digital pedalboard introduces latency, you may have a wireless transmitter that introduces latency, then you may be far from the speaker, adding more latency... That's for saying that it depends from your entire solution... Thank you

I agree latency is a bit high. TONEX claims 3ms and modellers such such as Axe fx claim 1ms. If this is 8.6 then even adding any digital pedal, wireless, monitor feed from a digital mixer, would make this difficult for me to play.

I would not trust the declared latency, because they could only state the bare "buffer size / bit rate" without taking int account the ADC/DAC and processing latency. One easy way to have an accountable measurement is to record in a dawn at the same time the clean output of the guitar and the output of the pedalboard, as the two channels of a stereo track and then measure the distance between the starting of the non zero samples

On paper NAM should be better, as it is based on "more complex" neural networks, that in fact require more processing power and are harder to run in device like the MOD dwarf. Thanks!

Ciao Leo! Sono un nuovo fan del tuo canale, e devo dire che ho fatto parecchio 'binge watching' dei tui videos nelle ultime 2 settimane. Let's shift in English so people are not pissed at the Italian mob haha ;) So: I am a beginner/mid guitarist who is looking to an upgrade from my ol' Vox VT20+ (which integrates a light version of the great Vox Tonelab multieffect/amp modeler, including a prehistoric proprietary IR systems . For the $50 I bought it used, I'm happy, but feels that it's now outdated, and would like to play a bit :) Thus I'm on the market for a great bang-for-the-buck under $300 in terms of integrated [fx-amp modeler-amp capture loader-IR loader] solution - preferably in the form of a floor pedal. I have looked maaaany of your reviews and comparisons... in a nutshell , if ToneX pedal could also control Amplitube and came with their full package (max software for both) at $300 total, I'd go for that. But it does not. That said... I bumped on the MOD Dwarf... and wow!!!! This is basically what ToneX dreams to be: amp captrues loader with a much more advanced VST, and the footswtich can control the VST, by switching pedalboards or individual stomps/amps/cabs, but it's well over my budget ($529 new), the community seems smaller than ToneX and NAM, and MOD seems to have a fragile financial health (prone to bankrupcy and loss of developer support) That said, a company called Blokas has developed it for Raspberry Pi (cheap) micro computer, and it's called MODEP (MOD Emulator for Pi), a free software). So I am now hesitating between the Mooer GE-200 (around $200 used !!), or a used MOD Duo 1st gen (around $300 used) or a home-assembled MODEP combo - that offers a way better VST (open source) plugin than MooerStudio, and a higher CPU power compared to the Dwarf - that is: Raspberry Pi computer + PiSound audio interface + used midi controller (total ~$300)... Any thoughts?

Hi, first of all thank you so much for watching the videos!!! I would say that if you are searching for a solution to play live or for gigging, I would NOT go with the Raspberry + audio interface, etc.. This is maybe personal, but for playing live I would like to have a reliable solution, hassle free... I mean, with the Raspberry solution, I would always be afraid that something goes wrong...this is maybe personal, but I feel kind the Raspberry + audio interface is not as reliable as an amp mod pedalboard. As regards GE 200 vs MOD Duo...the MOD Duo is more flexible, with the possibility to load AIDA...I don't have the MOD Duo, therefore I can't share my direct experience, but I think you are more prone to get flexible and open solutions (considering that you are also considering the Raspberry way). Thank you!

@@LeoGibsonGtr Grazie Leo. I can get a used 1st gen MOD Duo for a similar price as the combo R-Pi+PiSound+midi pedalboard. I'm inclined to go for the 1st gen MOD Duo, the only thing that concerns me is the CPU power... with the recently added AIDA-X plugin, it might become CPU-hungry and the 1st gen MOD Duo has only a Dual 1Ghz processor... On the other way, the R-Pi combo would be as powerful as a MOD DuoX (their 2nd gen desktop pedalbox), but no 'screen on pedal, and even lighter community support... Homemade cutting edge processing power with more self-troubleshooting, or low processing power that might become saturated soon, but with better community support... I'll have to mediatate a bit. Thanks for your feedback! Please (if you can) give us more vids on the Dwarf, as I think it might become a dead ringer for ToneX if they allow for NAM plugin to work in the MOD vst.... or maybe the rapsberry will do it :)

@andythefrenchy8026 Жыл бұрын
Also: I did quite a lot of reading today on the MOD users forum: someone (last March) already gave your suggestion to develop the compatibility with NAM (Anaconda), but bad news... here is what MOD's main developer answered: "it is not worth bothering, even on the duox with 256 frames all the models I tried could not run properly. It needs some serious optimizations before we think about using those." In a nustshell: we're far from seeing NAM integrated in the MOD, in place of AIDA-X. That said, I'm confused, because NAM has already been tested on Raspberry Pi4, and it works! But... with a slightly more powerful R-Pi (maybe R-Pi 5?), it might be possible to run MODEP (just for fx), and add NAM and a cab IR loader in chain, like on desktop... Time will tell. Could the MOD Dwarf be used like an HX Stomp, using amps, cabs and effects already on their site? I am concerned about latency, so am guessing the HX units would be better than using the Dwarf as a standalone unit?

I can share a nice story about Line 6. In the early phase of devel, to save time, we didn't trained real amps. I've trained myself several Helix Native amps. Sounded great. Then eventually I've trained the real amps from which the Line 6 models belongs to. Since in the plugin I can switch from one model to the other on the fly, while leaving al the rest untouched, was a great comparison test. The model from the real amp was just much better, always feel like Line 6 models have been edited with unknown functions that you never really know, since it's closed source. I was not comparing a "difficult" amp, but a Fender Twin Reverb / US Double Nrm. Same channel, settings etc. The compression that the real amp provides, but still remains clean, it's simply not there on Line 6 model. To me, this compression is the reason you would use a Twin. The Line 6 model goes into this kind of overdrive sound that it's cool but it's just another thing, not a Twin.

AidaX is the name of the tone capture technology they integrated in the MOD software. It is a similar plugin as NAM and ToneX, for example. One cannot 'delete' from a capture file a cab or an effect that has been captured 'as a whole' (I mean, it can, but with bad results until now). Instead, one can find use 'separate' captures (like amp only, or cab IR only, or tone fx only - yes fx pedal can be captured as well with neural networks, except for time based effect like delay and reverb), and then add whatever one likes individually. The answer to your question is: yes, you can add any extra effect you want to a tone capture. That said, what you cannot do is modifying the amp knobs (the EQ/gain knobs on AidaX/ToneX/NAM have little impact), or eliminate the cab or the effect that has been captured in the file. Hence why it's always advisable to get and use 'amp alone' capture files or 'cab IR alone' file more so than an 'amp+cab capture file, that would allow less flexibility (and a cab IR alone file used in end chain gives better realism, because it's a different way to capture, it's not a tone). As for the fx stomps capture, I have to acknowledge that I do not fully understand the concept of that... I'd rather stick to a signal chain like that: fx stomp sims from MOD software > amp model from MOD software (or amp tone capture from AidaX or NAM) > time based fx sims from MOD software > cab IR from 3rd party

About adjusting the parameters of the effects within the editing software... did you find it complicated... or did you find it intuitive? I'm very used to making adjustments to pedalboards. Thank you soo so much, I'm really happy that you like the videos! Yes, running NAM alone in the dwarf and using it in the FX loop of another machine is a good option. The only issue could be the latency as you are gonna sum up the latency of the Dwarf and the one of the Valeton. The latency summed could still be manageable, but if you add something else (like a wireless transmitter), latency could become a problem. Another solution could be to use the new AIDA plugins in the Dwarf (the Vibro and the JCVM), that draws less power compared to NAM....this is something I'm testing currently.... Thank you!

@@gianfrancoceccolini8 I just saw it. Unfortunately I'm not overseas in Japan. Would it will be possible to choose that option?

Yes a hardware solution must have more hardware connectivity. Stereo Effects loop at the very least... preferably 2 🙄

It reminds me of using Linux instead of MacOS or Windows. Sounds great on paper but if you want an easy "grab and go" solution, with minimal learning curve, that will (almost) always work, this is not for you, despite all of the efforts of the creators. Fascinating nevertheless

Why would it not always work?

Can I ask where is the learning curve in dragging effects from a library inside a web-ui? According to your comment it seems you need to patch the kernel.

Not a great comparison. The UI is drag and drop

I cannot agree less, you are complaining because you cannot hammer a nail with a screwdriver... If you have different tools you have to use them as they are supposed to

me who stopped using amps probably back in the 1900s trying to figure out why I'm here 😩. You can't own anything if humans exist. Got my amp one day sold it 2 weeks later due to humans having armed forces to bully gods who don't understand they litterly control both yet

I feel the processor is too weak to be very useful. Having 2 would be great. Wonder why such a weak processor at such a high price?

The Dwarf runs 4 Cortex-A35 cores at 1.3GHz each. Is there really any device out there in this price range with more CPU power? For comparison, there was a look inside the IK Tonex pedal posted on TheGearPage: it has 2 Cortex-M7 cores at 400/600Mhz.
