Minardi was a team everyone had a soft spot for. They never won, they very rarely scored points, they were often last, but they were giving it a red hot go that captured the hearts of many that watched F1.
But in 2000, the team was sold in a bid to keep it alive, and it was purchased by the very vocal Australian Paul Stoddart, who seemed to constantly be battling with the FIA because he felt that they were out to end the team just because they weren't as rich as everyone else.
So what happened? Let's find out...
Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!

Minardi was pretty much everyone's second team. If ever they got a point (whether as "pure" Minardi or under Stoddard), everyone (edit: not just Minardi; fans too!) celebrated like they won. _Real_ racers ☺️

Fun fact: Alonso spent night and day in the shop helping them build the car to get it done on time to make the grid. Fernando is handy with a wrench. It’s unkind to say “they acted like they just won the championship.” I’d say, for what they were working with, that feat was more impressive than most of the teams winning a race.

Even if it appears like they are starting to slowly phase it out with the new VCARB era, credit to a big company like Red Bull for still keeping the little team based in Faenza for almost 20 years now. It would have been too easy for them to co-locate their two teams into one precinct.

Yeah Minardi always did good work on a very limited budget. I think if they got the Mugens for 1995 things may have been different - I still don't understand the deal, but Aguri Suzuki has said himself that Briatore lied to him/Mugen about the second Ligier seat. He thought he had it for the full season, not knowing Brundle had already been signed. Briatore didn't tell Brundle either.
@ivaneurope
@ivaneurope 3 ай бұрын
And considering that Gitanes (and later Gauloises) were still sponsoring the team Briatore couldn't ditch Panis either, because a French driver needs to be in a French team (even though it was now co-owned by an Italian in Briatore and a Scot in Tom Walkinshaw). And I'd argue that Walkinshaw vouched for Brundle to be in the team given their history together in both F1 and sportscars (Brundle did race for TWR Jaguar) and I assume Briatore didn't tell his business partner either, which may've forced Walkinshaw to pivot towards the Arrows team for 1996.

Minardi had the Ferrari engines for 1 year: 1991. Unfortunately except two 4th places nothing good came from it because they lost one of their sponsors to Ferrari. And Martini put his car on P2 at the US GP in 1990 which was wild back then. The entire grid at that race was wild with several backmarkers in the Top 10 and Moreno in the EuroBrun outqualifying a Ferrari

Hearing the grid reacting to their success, and their later reactions to the success of their team post-buyout is heartwarming, and I remember it being interesting, heartwarming, and hilarious at times. The episode is on plenty of apps, and on KZfaq - "Paul Stoddart: Finding Faith In Fernando Alonso And Minardi’s Miracle | F1 Beyond The Grid Podcast" I believe he goes through a lot of stories about the acquisition of the team and their ups and downs, Alonso, etc. - If I recall right, the story of their points that made the entire team celebrate like the world was ending.

I still remember the ranting outburst from Stoddart in 2005. First keeping it restrained, but when reporter Jack Plooij noticed held back anger, commentator Olav Mol reminded Paul that he could swear on Dutch television, and then he went absolutely berserk. In hindsight, I guess years of frustration about the politics in F1 came out in three minutes of ranting. And even then, he reminded us that he found the backmarker racing fun. Giancarlo Minardi was the body of the team, but in the final years of the team, Stoddart was the soul. Absolute madman. Interview is here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mL9nfMeI1de9iH0.html

In your list of other notable Minardi drivers I'm surprised you don't list Alessandro Nannini who had previously served Minardi's F2 team while also driving for the factory Lancia team in the World Sportscar Championship, setting the fastest lap at Le Mans in 1984 in the Lancia LC2 and later that year winning the Kyalami 6 Hours in the LC2 alongside the late Bob Wollek. Nannini as an F1 rookie regularly outpaced his more experienced team mate Andrea de Cesaris in 1986 and had no trouble out-pacing Adrián Campos (another of the more money than talent brigade) in 1987 before going to Benetton in 1988. Fun Fact: Alessandro Nannini was actually Minardi's first choice to be their Formula One driver in 1985. However, for 1985 FISA did not grant Nannini the Super Licence required to be able to race in F1. This meant Minardi had to go with their other F2 driver Pierluigi Martini who did have a Super Licence having substituted for the suspended Artyon Senna at Toleman in the 1984 Italian Grand Prix.

You forgot Jirko Malcharek - who was officially signed as a Minardi test driver at one point in 2002 although it wasn't clear he actually had a superlicense and I don't think he ever drove the monopost. He was a notorious back-mid fielder in Porsche Supercup but, crucially, was also running for an MP seat in Slovakia's general election*. F1 was huge in Slovakia back then so Malcharek scoring that test seat was an OMG moment and help him win that seat. It was all publicity stunt. Minardi needed the money, Malcharek was running for a party of a Slovak TV magnate (think small-scale Berlusconi). Some dollars change hands... Fittingly, Malcharek served as ... Minister of Economy. *it was his re-election campaign albeit for a different, but equally opportunistic ad-hoc political party.

Also didn’t Alex Yoong not have power steering during all of 2002 while Mark Webber got power steering within a few races after 2002 started?

Wasn't Nannini at Minardi as well? I remember him spinning at Tosa in 1986 San Marino GP

Yeah he was. I only named a selection and not every driver.

What about Ted Toleman and his lack of tyres. I still believe Derek Warwick would have had an even more glorious and successful career had his team, Toleman, been given the tools to do a proper job in the highly competitive world of Formula one motor racing.
