Thrilling account.Am reminded of visit to our Armd Brigade HQ in a rest house in Kalaswala, on MRL,in 1972,as a 2/lt.It was a night of 'Rang ralian', a dining out for the Brigade Comd, when the now-taboo liquor flowed like the canal water.

Sir, while the documentary on Canal Rest Houses is excellent, it overlooks the rich history of the Forest Department's rest houses. The first man-made forest, Changa Manga, was established in 1860, and rest houses were constructed in every irrigated plantation and hill forest. The Forest Department itself was founded in 1886. The British built these rest houses in hill forests at intervals of approximately 10 miles, maintaining them in good condition for many years. Many of these Forest Rest Houses still keep older British-era records, including guest logs and remarks, which are historical treasures in themselves. Unfortunately, these historic rest houses in hilly area have deteriorated since the previous government's decision to transfer their control to the Tourism Department, leading to their decline.

I had the previlage to stay in a "A Class Rest House" for one week when I was 10 to 12 years old and still remember that as a fond memory. I saw and used very first time a WC (sitting commode" (LOL) in that rest house in ~1973. I hope and wish the rest house is still there and could see it it one more time.

Wonderful work sir!👍you never cease to amaze with different historical content every time. Apart from canal rest houses, forest rest houses of irrigated plantations and hilly areas of muree, kahuta, kotli sattian and in kpk mostly built in british period are treat to watch as well.

Very well explained. I remember a rest house in Multan on Bahwalpur Road. That rest has Department office and rest house. It was in better condition. But I agree with you that the systematic loot and plunder in all the Departments of government has brought things to lowest levels.

there should be some words about forest rest-houses. typically in Rawalpindi district. like Dhanoi and Punjarr and many more

Once again a fascinating narration of the bygone days. Funny, that I have visited the Head Islam rest house near Luddan. It was well maintained and in use of the Irrigation Department. It was in a leafy location as you described.

میرپور خاص سے آگے جھڈو شہر سے... جنوب. مغرب میں ایک ایریگیشن بنگلو تھا کمال کا اے کلاس کا ریسٹ ہاؤس تھا.. آٹھ سے دس ایکڑ رقبہ پر تھا.. خوبصورت باغ تھا.. ملازموں کے کوارٹرز الگ تھے.. بڑے پیڑ تھے.. لیکن اب وہاں کچھ نہیں.. آثار بھی نہیں.. ایک اینٹ بھی نہیں

Though many canal rest houses in our Punjab have fallen in a state of disrepair or have been sold to influential persons for a pittance due to their prime location, there are several who are still well maintained. There is one in nearby Ropar which bears construction year of 1881 and has been maintained properly.

During my each visit from Lahore to Islamabad I stop at location 183 N and enjoy the serenity and antiquity of this rest house locally known as bungalow No 38. It has a little canal in front of it.
