Move from 16th notes to triplets seamlessly as you practice this bluesy lick! It works over a blues, or any major ii V I and I think you'll have lots of fun with it!

This is so helpful Aimee. Not just a lick but a way of approaching a new lick for the first time, namely clapping the rhythm out and singing it before actually playing. I'm a guitarist and of course, all this applies equally well in my case. Thanks for the lick itself. I'll be playing this on guitar asap. :-)

Thanks, Aimee. What an awesome lesson! As a guitarist, the double stops at the beginning of the phrase are a little difficult to play, but the double stops at the end sound amazing on guitar. This will become part of my vocabulary. This is very slick sounding line.

I wish that I had listened to as much music, jazz, or no, as you have Aimee! JAzz, is not my heartthrob, but, I like alot of music. Just listening and dissecting any is a big part of playing and singing. Again, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your work here! For me and Others!

Subdividing in your head is SO important! This hits home more & more with me all the time, especially as my role as a big band drummer with community band the past 20-plus years. It also applies to all types of music though, from my small jazz combos, to learning new authentic flamenco rhythms on my cajon with a flamenco group, or to simply singing around the campfire with my six-string. In fact, I just iterated this with a young junior-high drummer last night, who was learning to play the slow "God Bless The Child" with his school jazz band. Even though the music was in rather slow 4/4 and simply stated "Jazz Feel" (really, Mr. Arranger?) I told him think of it more in a 12/8 feel, and count "one-trip-let, two-trip-let....". I've only stumbled upon your channel just recently, but I'm already a fan. Thanks for your enthusiastic and fun energy in presenting & sharing your musical nuggets of wisdom :-)

Hi Aimee. Love your licks! I would like to see an extended video demonstrating how you would execute this in all 12 keys. You're very good at breaking things down and detailing how things are done.

+horowizard hmmm wouldn't that just be like showing off? Any ideas of how I could do that and actually do some good for people?
@horowizard
@horowizard 7 жыл бұрын
Showing off? No, not at all! Everything I ever do in Pop or Jazz I make a deliberate attempt at learning a half-step up and a half-step down (for the benefit of playing with Guitarists that might feel uncomfortable in flat keys) and maybe even a fourth below in case a guy needs to sing a girl song or vise versa.. I think it's a great exercise. As far as how to approach it, I would say just roll up your sleeves and get to work! Either traverse the Cycle of Fifths which would gradually introduce an new accidental with each subsequent Key, or take it up or down Chromatically. Your choice. It's only one little phrase!
@AimeeNolte
@AimeeNolte 7 жыл бұрын
+horowizard I don't mean that. of course I can play this lick in all of the keys. I mean, why show everybody that I can play something in 12 keys? Why do I need to show them? That's showing off. What good is it going to do them by watching me play something and 12 keys? I do that on my own time.
@horowizard
@horowizard 7 жыл бұрын
Just show them how it's done. Some keys won't lend themselves to the the slide-off. Others have different obstacles to tackle. I think some people are afraid of playing in some keys such as B major or C#. I think it might help them overcome those fears.

Could you do one about harmonic movement, the kind you see in a YT video of Mulgrew Miller playing Old Folks? I know it's a bit specific, but just an idea :) A style where you really take a long way to approach a chord, not only triton substitutions or chromatic dominant movements, but a combination of the two mixed with other kinds of passing chords. I'm addicted to these sounds and would love some new perspective to expand on.

How do you stay in time, when out of time?...Just saw it in the live take, when talking and playing at the same time, or playing out thinking of something else, chord, line, whatever....the comping gets faster and slower, but it doesnt fall apart. what is your anchor? are you then accenting on a beat, or is it more the dynamic as a whole that keeps it together?

not that it means anything but, I sorta came up with a funny scat thing when I listen to the radio and a commercial is on and the announcer is talking really fast to get it all in and I`m like: ya ya well, `bottle ah bottle ah bottle ah bottle ah bottle ah` scatted as fast as you can scat that. I crack myself up when I do that. heheto add: or maybe its ` botta lah botta lah` anyway. :-)
