Air Canada Jumps Into Vancouver-Singapore Gap Created By Singapore Airlines

Changi International Airport will soon welcome an old visitor as Air Canada announced in mid-June the strategic expansion of its international network. Soon, there will be a new route connecting Vancouver and Singapore. While this boosts traffic for the airline's trans-Pacific hub, it also fills the capacity gap left behind by Singapore Airlines as it gradually exits the Canadian market. Let’s look at this development in today’s video!

When there is so much demand for non-stop flights between the countries, than why is SQ leaving the market?

Singapore airlines decided to fly into Seattle instead

SQ had Seattle in their network before Vancouver. I looked it up and the official reason is a lack of demand, so the “high demand” statement was kinda wrong in the video.

SA has done the math and can get higher yields flying their own aircraft somewhere else while letting Star Alliance partner AC take over the route.

An Expansion into Lagos from Toronto would be interesting with 788 or A333 as There is high demand or maybe the 77L to Cpt or jnb

Singapore must have thought that code sharing with a partner airline is just as good. KLM does not fly to Seattle, but its Sky Team partner Delta has been flying to Amsterdam for many years.

Both SQ and Air Canada are members of the Star Alliance, so that helps too.

This route is very seasonal. The load for northern winter is very poor.

Vancouver was actually a stopover on Singapore to Seattle flights. Singapore Airlines flights to Seattle are more popular than Vancouver so they decided to just make the flight non-stop between Singapore and Seattle, saving the flight 2 hours.

Since AC will be the only carrier flying non stop they obviously will have a monopoly on the route. And I'm betting they will charge a hefty price for the seats. AC has never been known to have the cheaper rates to any destination. But Canadians are probably used to the higher prices.

They might - YVR-BKK was seasonal from December until end of March, so I could see that continuing then realigning to YVR-SIN.

Actually, the flight performance from YVR to SIN wasn't looking good because SQ has a 2 hours turnaround in YVR, meaning SQ doesn't have enough time to capture transit pax from YVR.

I hope someday Air Canada will fly directly to The Philippines too, to provide options for passengers -- PAL currently dominates the route, and usually charges more that I think they should be.
@stere0xide
@stere0xide Жыл бұрын
PAL's product is superior to Air Canada's. There's plenty of competition albeit with stopovers but these put pressure on PAL to keep its prices competitive.
@gabllido
@gabllido Жыл бұрын
@@stere0xide Hmm, i see what you mean. However, PAL uses their 777 for Vancouver Routes, and the business class on that has a 2-3-2 layout.; I think Air Canada offers the better business class, not to mention the lounge perks Air Canada/Star Alliance offers.
@stere0xide
@stere0xide Жыл бұрын
@@gabllido yes and it was formerly the A350s when they had more. Sure the hard product may be nicer for now but the soft product, the catering, the overall service is far superior. You will be disappointed with what Air Canada offers on long haul flights.

Not a good idea. The Chinese and Japanese carriers have a lot capacity from Vancouver to their hubs and from their hubs to Singapore. Taking a 1 stop connection for a 20 hour journey is not that inconvenient. If the customer's final destination isn't Singapore then their routes are even more competitive. I imagine Air Canada bumps down to a 787-8 or to 3 days a week.

the Canadian full service carrier should gradually replace it's existing fleet of A321-200 & A320-200 . . . not to mention it's aging A330-300 fleet . . . at Air Canada additional B787-9 & B787-10 wide body jets is the natural replacement for the A330-300 . . . or the B777-300 ER wide body jets (if any) for that matter . . .

16 hours on a 787 NightMare Liner, I wouldn't get on one for 16 seconds. I understand why Singapore Airlines is pulling out of the Canada market, the Canadian government is worse than the US Government.
