I second the comment mentioning the egg crate foam, although really what I think you should do is use a product like dynamat made for car audio, it's just a dense tar like material with an adhesive backing, if you lined the entire inside with that, took out the air filter and just lined the whole thing with the egg crate foam it'd possibly help a db or two. Another experiment I'm curious about is... would just stuffing like pillow stuffing (polyester fiber fill) work well. A stuff animal you don't need or want, an old pillow, anything could be sacrificed to get the "stuffing" out, just take the filter out and put it in. My guess is that the fibers would soak up a lot of the soundwaves. Maybe even steel wool, maybe it being denser than the polyester would help, or some combination of the two. A lot of mufflers have multiple chambers, possibly funneling the sound through a few cardboard sections with a hole in varying spots so the air doesn't have a direct route to the exit hole, but I feel like the polyester fill would work just as well in this application. And for the hoses, maybe hose clamps to ensure theres no air escaping the hose, and then maybe a thicker hose on the outside just to shield it could help a smidge. There's a law of diminishing returns Im sure, but I think a couple of these ideas could be done pretty quick and might help (or would at least be interesting to know if it did anything).

Dynamat just reduce materials vibrations, on wich it's stuck on, to modify the noise tone by lowering "parasitic noises caused by vibrating panels ,and flat parts wich are not very rigid. It does not really reduce the noise itself ,from the source. It's maybe working on car body panels,but i doubt it would do something here in the airbox at least.(certainly would in the tank,and on the pump itself) I had made a megaphone with this airbox,so i just had to cancel intake noises,wich are quite low frequencies. On the software you can see that low frequencies are no more produced by the intake,and the rest is mechanical noises from the whole machine itself. I could make a muffler in the airbox in front of the fittings,yes it would be a good idea,and it would maybe reduce again something. I have hose clamps,you can see them ,in a nice zoom shot there : 3:47 and yes it made a difference on the dB meter : ) because they were a bit loose. Thicker hoses i don't think,i could try it however..

Check out the Ads for the California Air Tool compressors - I am not sure how they do it, but they get the noise down from10 to 20 decibels lower than your compressor, pending on the compressor tested. What ever they are doing seems to be both effective and astonishing.

They are around 70 dB ,but at wich distance ? it's not indicated.... They also rotate slow,1780 rpm.

Michael, I feel a lot of the sound in HF emminates from the mechanical elements of the compressor. We have compressors installed in indoor enclosures at our dental surgery. The enclosures are lined with egg carton shaped foam and the mechanical HF "clatter" is well attenuated. Try directing your meter more specifically at the compressor and look for the telltale HF you are reading on the app to null my hypothesis!!, cheers, Richard

Yes,reed valves are noisy,and you can see them working on the sound software if i'm right 6800 to 7400HZ 7:41 All the noise i have remaining is the mechanical noise,on wich i have realy limited solutions. I could install everything on silent blocks.

Have you ever tried exhaust baffles as well or even a back box off a car?
@michaelovitch
@michaelovitch 4 жыл бұрын
No,i didn't. I don't know if induction noise are similar to exhaust noises, fluids don't go the same directions and do not have the same temps.

I have a couple of tractor mufflers that I am going to run outside and hook the intake to them. Just to get the noise outside of my shop. My compressor sets next to the outside wall. Going to do it this weekend and I will post the results. I will have to weld up a adaptor from three cylinders to one with a 2 inch for the muffler. I have all the exhaust pipe to do it It's just a matter of time involved.

If you can,try to insulate the muffler from the adpter with a soft hose ,long enough to not allow vibrations to be transmitted to the muffler. Since it's quite a big metallic part, it could vibrate and make noise itself. It's just to help,i don't want to direct your work,or restrain your creativity.

@@michaelovitch Thanks, I am going to use flex tubing from the compressor heads to a adaptor into 3 inch pipe and the mufflers will be outside of the shop. The compressor is bolted to a heavy wood skid with wheels on it. I don't bolt them to the floor anymore because I have had to replace three of them because of lightning strikes here in Florida, and they all had different bolt patterns on the legs. My concrete floor looks like I have had termites on it... LMAO When I get it done I will send you photos of it.

@@michaelovitch BTW there is a app for phones that measure sound in db. The I will use a sound editing program for Linux called Audacity to see what frequency needs to be lowered. I would say 60 hz. to 110 hz. would be the culpert.

@@VNV67 wow, That's sucks about lightning... I don't think an app on a phone would be that good i'm not sure that phones have microphones able to pick up all the frequencies you hear is able to. As i know they are limited to human voice frequencies or a quite reduced amplitude of frequencies. I can be wrong however. i would be happy to see your set up for sure : )

For sure,not that easy ,reed valves are noisy,but at least intake noises are gone. I reduced noise by 7 dB from stock machine while it fill up in half the time. Not too bad for my use. I could use silent blocks between the tank and pump motor asssembly i guess.

I suppose you could make a wooden box to fit over the whole thing and that would dampen some more of the high pitched noises. Glue engine noise reduction padding on the inside of the box to absorb more. Maybe that is going too far though ha ha :-D Actually going too far is digging a hole in the garden and installing a pond liner, then throw the compressor in and cap it off ha ha -D :-D.
