Special tactics officers plan missions by gathering intel, weather and operational capabilities, which is why that STO stated, NOT YOUR JOB, to do the actual mission.The missions are completed by on the ground Combat Controllers, Pararescue, SEAL's and Special forces.These officers plan the aircraft and operational side of the mission. Think, Iran rescue failure, NOT happening again.They work with all branches to successful completion of the mission. If you want a peek, into some of what they do. Lookup "AL-Libi capture" or "US DELTA FORCE SNATCHING AL QAEDA SUSPECT". Classic mission that took about 60 seconds to grab this guy off the street in Libya.

+Mike William Most of what you said is true, however Field Grade STOs will spend a lot of time on the ground in the middle of these operations. Once Company Grade they'll go into more of a planning role. Look up Blake Luttrell for an example of this.

@firecat3613
@firecat3613 9 жыл бұрын
Jaden Aspen Actually, there have been women involved in similar capacity, within the AF, for over 30 years. Admittedly, they were few and far in between; generally in their positions due to "special" requirements and circumstances. What you may consider a precursor to STO and the concept of the SOC, was a small detachment of the AFOSI, code named, "Alpha/Omega." Consisting of 24 elite individuals, attached to the AF, although recruited from the various branches. You could say, the first, "true joint operations," began with these guys. They sent into all sorts of nasty situations - including some the American public will never know about. Two of the 24 were ... women! These two women, between them, in the execution of their duties, managed to collect 4 silver stars, 7 bronze stars, the legion of merit and an air force cross. One of them even managed to be awarded a NAVY silver life-saving ribbon!

so what's the difference between this and a combat controller?
@TristanCzerwinski
@TristanCzerwinski 8 жыл бұрын
A combat controller is just that: a combat controller. That is what they do. They go out in the field and are basically combat air traffic controllers. They manage all air force aircraft in the sky on the battlefield. It is an enlisted only job. There are no Combat Control Officers. A Special Tactics Officer is trained in all aspects of special operations, unconventional warfare, and Air Force weaponry, aircraft, and capabilities. They are mostly advisors to Air Force leaders and mentors to other SF trainees.
@KwanzorGaming
@KwanzorGaming 8 жыл бұрын
Tristan Czerwinski it says that they go through the same training as a CC, so is there any chances that a STO will get deployed into the field as part of special operations?

kaelmon To be honest, I'm not sure. As I recall there is a STO in the video who tells us that it is not the STO's job to carry out the mission, but rather to lead and train the men who do. However, knowing the skills that STOs possess, it's hard to imagine that they would never operate in the field.

NightFury like the officers said you learned the same things enlisted CCT's learn but your job isn't to be an operator on the ground your job is to serve the enlisted and give them everything they need to achieve success. You don't see SEAL officers on the ground you see them in the base, officers pretty much do the desk side of special operations all SOF officers do that's were they are the most effective.

Karl Fultz I looked around and the standards are a bit different. The main difference is that combat controllers run 1.5 miles for the PAST and STOs run 3 miles for their physical test.
@haydenknight3965
@haydenknight3965 9 жыл бұрын
TheShamrockGuy The PAST is the same for STOs and CCTs, and then at the end of the first two weeks of combat contol selection you have to take the exit PAST, which the standards are much higher. static.e-publishing.af.mil/production/1/af_a3_5/publication/cfetp1c2x1c1/cfetp1c2x1c1.pdf

Sean Collin Ray They raised the bar, from when I first came in contact with them [pararescue] 30 years ago. At the time, to even be considered, it was a 1.5 mile run, in under 11 minutes, the underwater was not required and it was a mile swim (forgot the time limit required, but it was more than 32 minutes ... I think it was 50 minutes). Each event went right into the next, with very little time in between. For example, after the 1.5 mile run, you immediately went into the swim. It wasn't just each event, it was an overall endurance thing. The whole process started with some sgt walking into a basic training barracks and simply asking, "Is anyone interested in trying out for Pararescue?" A lot of people, thinking they get out of basic training for the day, raised their hands. However, by the time the run was over, 70-80% of the volunteers were gone. At some point during the swim, only about 2-5% were left. Bare in mind, the volunteer was not told any of the physical or time requirements. In other words, after all those push ups, pull -ups, etc, you had no clue if you had 6 minutes or 20 minutes to do the run. So, the concept of, "pacing yourself," was off the table.

lol why would anybody want to be an sto, you have to go through that entire pipeline to do what, sit behind a desk doing jack shit besides paperwork, all the enlisted guys are not very fond of most special operations officers cause they just get in the way, somebody needs to do the job and respect to them but nothing in my mind would ever justify being a sto

That view is a bit colored. He does go into the field as the team leader. His role is to advise and assist where needed. As far as the desk job is concerned that doesn't rear it head until you make major. From 2nd Lt thru Capt. you are out in the field doing the job.
@MARKSMAN108
@MARKSMAN108 7 жыл бұрын
no you can be put on staff and not assigned to an operational unit as a 1stLT and up, rarely do stos go on a mission, a CCT is already a support role assigned to a ODA or Seal platoon for anything air related so you dont need an adviser to the adviser, they might be in the "field" as they are at a patrol base or FOB in country, but not really more than that

Oh ok thanks for the replies gents, my brother said I should just go in as an officer for the money but I want to actually be out there on the field so I'm having a hard time between wether I should enlist and try out for CCT or if I should try to go in as an officer and try out for STO
@MARKSMAN108
@MARKSMAN108 7 жыл бұрын
it really depends on if your rather be doing an actual task,mission, etc, or planning it and telling the enlisted guys what to do, enlisted CCTs are very smart and can operate on their own, they just need some guidance and organization, that is where the officers come in. Some jobs junior officers have very important roles in the field, like army/marine infantry, navy seals(2lts), usually anything that involves a platoon working together in the field, but areas like most air force special operations, rangers, seals(at a higher level, think tier 1) it is all NCO driven. Plus if you enlist and become a CCT after a few deployments you can become an officer if you want. Forget about the money though at the end of the day its shit pay officer and enlisted, just go work for an airport or airline company if planes/air related stuff is your field and money is your concern.

Why anyone wants to be a STO is beyond me. I retired from Combat Control and I will tell you that STO's are not worth their title. They rarely see combat. Unlike the other SOF officer corps they don't lead their own in to combat and do not lead other SOF units they attach to either. In addition, they have little respect from the majority of the enlisted warriors that actually fight. Ive watched them. STO's make policy that they have ZERO experience in making. Go after the men that have 5-6 deployments because they are injured, broken and needed help.
