We take a look back to 1974 and up to 1980s, still decades ago when DFW became operational. This special Airport PAST series will come in three parts - 1) DFW-AA. 2) DFW-BN, Braniff & 3) DFW-All carriers.
Facts about DFW-
Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport or as you may know it .. DFW inaugurated as the primary international airport serving the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex area in the U.S. state of Texas.
DFW’s original name was Dallas/Fort Worth Regional Airport
But became Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport when it opened for commercial service on January 13, 1974, at a cost of $700 million.
It is the ninth busiest international gateway in the United States and second busiest in Texas.
In is the headquarters and home base of American Airlines, the second largest airline hub in the world and the United States, behind Delta's Atlanta hub,
Located roughly halfway between the major cities of Dallas and Fort Worth, DFW spills across portions of Dallas and Tarrant counties, and includes portions of the cities of Irving, Euless, Grapevine and Coppell. At 17,207 acres (6,963 hectares; 27 square miles), DFW is larger than the island of Manhattan, and is the second largest airport by land area in the United States, after Denver International Airport. My dad worked 37 years for American 1967-2004. Started at LaGuardia and transferred to DFW in 85'. Ive never in my life met someone who loved their job more than my dad. AA was his life. I went to work as a kid with him and it was like he was a celebrity. Literally everyone we passed said hello to him and had nothing but great things to say. He passed in 2019 at 72. He was a true legend!!!

Thank you for posting this. It’s hard to explain to enthusiasts in their teens and 20’s just how incredible DFW was in the 80’s and 90’s. I first visited it on spring break in 1995 at 9yrs old and it was a life changing moment. The variety of carriers and aircraft types was overwhelming and it was a non stop rotation of departures and arrivals. It’s one of the things that convinced me I had to become a pilot. The American Eagle Saab 340 footage at 5:50 really takes me back there. That aircraft is the perfect turbo prop in my eyes with the best sound in the world. I never flew on or knew of any that didn’t have the black props and spinners. Seeing those polished was something new.

Thanks Nate, congrats on fulfilling your dream! Yeah I remember those days, I was granted a airfield tour at DFW in 1983..have a few pics but man am I wishing I had purchased an early video recorder back then.

You cannot imagine all the media attention the DFW Airport got during the years of construction. It was really exciting, and it did a lot for the economy.

I love how the cockpit windows of the DC-10 are so distinguishable. Always made the DC-10 (and MD-11) really look like Mad Dogs :)

Fond memories of DFW, Plus with Inflight 200 releasing AA B 757 shortly, another to add to the B 707, 727, 747, DC-10, MD-11 & MD-80 collection.

Amazing to see those 707s from back then. I'll never forget the sound of them and the super 80s. Very distinct compared to today's planes.

I worked for AA out there during this time in Fleet Service and pushed and power-backed many of those planes as well as, loading baggage, freight, mail, and Jim Caseys (Dead Bodies) cleaned the inside and restocked in cabin service department, and even worked the Lavatory Truck emptying the poo waste and I hated getting under those 747SP's they leaked like crazy. Great memories. The Airport has changed so much since those days of the late 80's and 90's.

I miss this livery too. I have a few in my collection on this livery...MD-11, Super 80, Boeing 727-200 (same aircraft that was at the museum in Seattle, now in Kansas City, KS/MO), Boeing 767 with yellow ribbon and a Boeing 737 with winglets. The bare metal scheme was much better than the boring grey.

Wow!!!!! Great upload!!! Miss that iconic livery for American Airlines. Growing up it remained truly American. Reminded all these years never flew into DFW on American. It was Delta when they had a hub at DFW.

Actually, the first hotel built north of the airport was a Holiday Inn. It was off 114 at Esters Road. You can see it in one of the videos with no other buildings being around. The Marriott was not built until 1981 or 1982. I worked there from 84-85. Most of the land on the north side of the airport was indeed farmland. I grew up in Colleyville and when I could drive in 1980 I would park on the shoulder of N Airfield drive right underneath the flight path. The planes were maybe 500-1000 ft above my head. I would also go to the terminals and ride the Airtrans between the terminals. It cost 50 cents back then and had turnstiles. Since this was right after deregulation, I would walk thru the terminals and collect all the timetables to all the new airlines that started serving DFW....New York Air, Republic, USAir, Piedmont, were some of the new ones I remember. I had a boxful of those timetables and unfortunately my brother tossed them when I went away to college.

321463 you had to pay to ride the Airtrans? Wow. I would go ride it in the late 90’s after I could drive. Wish I had kept the old timetables I collected.

Although I don't live in Texas, this is how I remember #AmericaAirlines from when I was a kid. Occasionally, my dad and I would visit the airport in Newark, New Jersey (I still live in New Jersey today) and watch the jet airliners land and take off from the airport. We never flew in them, although dad went with his brother once to Texas to visit San Antonio and see the Alamo. I miss the #GoodOldDays so badly that it hurts inside of me. I'd forgotten about the memories of going to the Newark Airport and watching the jets land and take off until I saw this video today.

@@Starboard76 I collect vintage battery operated passenger planes.In the mix are 2 TWA Boeing 707s with the “ Star Stream “ livery of the 60’s / early 70’s ; 2 American Boeing 707’s with the “ Lightning Streak “ livery ,and an American “ Lightning Streak” DC 7.

8 square miles of airport and wonderful red carpet throughout the terminal. Flew into DFW from San Francisco in September’75 on a rainy day and couldn’t believe how flat Texas was. This airport later became the largest maze of confusion in airport history. As a hub for American it still serves as a nucleus for international travel.

My mother worked for AA for 30 years and helped with the big move to DFW airport in 1974. She had already worked for a number or years for AA at Dallas Love Field. I can't believe how much that airport has changed. In 1974, the area around DFW was still open farm and ranch land, and had very little development, so much has been built around that airport. I think my mother told me once that in 1974, there was still land around DFW that was being farmed and had cattle grazing. lol...The Marriott on the north end of DFW on TX 114 that is still there, was built about the same time the airport opened and it was like the only thing on 114 near the airport. Thanks for the memories and the time capsule. Keep the videos coming, they are wonderful. Can't wait to see the Braniff video.

This is the time when being an airline buff or enthusiast meant something. Such variety and styles of aircraft. Now days, it's become stale and boring. Sad to say that around 97-98% of the jets in this video are no longer in operation, if not already cut up into tiny pieces, (I'm sure most of the MD80's are still with us.) . But, wonderful video and the 727's and DC-10's are truly missed.

Very sad to sit here and watch theses relics of the past 727 707 DC10 747 classic, knowing that now I will sit here soon and see the MD-80's that replaced planes like the 727 will perish into history just like the rest of these iconic birds. RIP MD80

DFW also has Boeing 757, and 767 planes as well. I flew on American Airlines Boeing 727, 757, and 767 as well as the MD80.

DFW Airport has NEVER been referred to as the DFW Metroplex. That term refers to the entire DFW metropolitan region aka the Metroplex.

I think American should have kept the bare metal look .save weight makes sense and inspection of airframe a lot easier. Plus that was a classic appearance !!!!!!!

University of KZfaq out doing themselves again. This is a trip in the way way way back machine. The only surviving fleet of these are the MD-80 and those should be gone end of the Month. Some of those aircraft maybe retired as airliners but can be found in museums, Cargo Carriers, test beds etc. so not totally retired.
