I am so happy to have been a kid in the 80’s. So many “cheesy” shows that I love to this day. MacGyver, Quantum Leap, A-Team, Airwolf, Knight Rider, Miami Vice. I could list a bunch more but I still watch these shows and I’m 41 now.

Blue Thunder the movie was great. Blue Thunder the TV show was just B-rated fluff. Airwolf movie & first season were great, but season 2 started decaying, and season 3 was mostly crap. They should re-make the show and update it. Hawke's brother can be MIA in Afghanistan, and replace the older Santini with a female computer nerd. Caitlin's character was nice, but only later on after she'd mellowed -- her initial loud southern fried version was crap. Nobody's impressed by wireframe computer graphics fx anymore - audiences have moved on. The Knight Rider reboot failed to understand that. They should let the helicopter have some kind of AI -- not the talking kind, but more like a predatory animal intelligence.

Omg I came from my tv to my phone to write exacly the same thing, being born in 73, I loved Blue Thunder, I might be wrong but wasn't that chopper more like a modern gunship like a Cobra or Apache, more square 😂😂😂. I'm British so I loved all the old American stuff like The Fall Guy, that truck was wicked in the 80's, I think it was a Chevrolet

@@manofsan Blue Thunder is on Amazon Prime right now. Love the movie even though I'm sure there's all kinds of technical things wrong with it. Having worked F-16s, there's a lot wrong with those scenes, too. But who cares, it's a fun flick in a lot of parts but also pretty sobering.

@vladyvhv9579

It's something that doesn't really get mentioned by video makers. Commenters in comments sections may bring it up from time to time. Something this episode touched on is that the computer is effectively a learning computer, which was then expanded on by the episode Moffett's Ghost. Also, the pilot episode mentions that the computer basically corrects minor pilot errors, and regulates various functions to streamline the crew's effectiveness. The hydraulics hissing in response to Dom, and in one episode engine flame out when he insulted the copter and restarting when he apologized, further gave subtle hints that the computer did in fact have an AI. As with the occasional growls and snarls. I think that perhaps Moffett's intent with things like the growl/snarl was added phycological warfare aspects. Add the line from this very episode where Winchester recounts Moffett saying "Airwolf is a living thing. More than you'd ever know..." further supports this train of thought.

The stunt pilots who flew the lady have said that she was more maneuverable and easier to fly overall due to the cosmetic mods added to it. The low ground fly by and the fast up and downs (push-overs) the lady would do weren’t sped up as fast as you’d think they were. The turbo scenes obviously were but the way they made it look realistic at a time when CGI wasn’t available was jaw dropping.
@gerv55
@gerv55 Жыл бұрын
Think it was more down to the whole back end being stripped out of the copter, all the seating in the back etc made it lose a lot of weight and made it more nimble. The cosmetic mods looked the part but i think the weight loss was the main factor that made it handle better.

The camera ship (usually a Hughes 500 or Jet Ranger) on Airwolf was flown by the late J. David Jones, who also flew the Hughes 500D in this episode (and most of the early episodes). He was the Aerial Co-Ordinator and 2nd Unit Director for 2 years on the show and was the absolute best in the industry, revered by all the young pilots on the show, and the Hollywood pilots of today (two of which, Kevin LaRosa II and Peter McKernan, Jnr are 2nd Generation stunt pilots / Aerial Co-ordinators, and their fathers flew on Airwolf). Peter McKernan, Snr and the then 23yo Peter Jnr both flew Airwolf on the series.

When you look back at this show you really start to realize how much footage actually they reused SO OFTEN and also how they moved the camera to make the helicopter appear to make a loop, which was actually the camera making a loop. And usually weapon deployment did seldom match up with the follow up view of the helicopter. In that regard they did it 'perfect' in the pilot episode "Sweet Britches" of season 2.

Absolutely 100% agree with you!!! Mover, you really should watch the 1983 movie “Blue Thunder”, the final helicopter duel between Roy Scheider in Blue Thunder and Malcolm McDowell’s urbanely evil Colonel Cochrane in a heavily armed Hughes 500 is just stunning! Amazing stunt pilots, superb cinematography and zero CGI, even the F-16s were models! You could never get away with filming anything like that in today’s ‘woke’ ‘Health and Safety’ and overly litigious world! “Catch you later!” 👉 😉 P.S. wait till you see those F-16s 🤣 The cockpits, controls, instruments, flight kit etc.etc. Oh boy! 😱😂🤣

Blue Thunder (1983) is one of those rare 80s movies that has stood the test of time. The third act where Murphy steals Blue Thunder after Lymangood was killed just smokes, perhaps only bettered by the dressing down that Murphy gets from Capt. Braddock in the first act. And the footage of the police choppers chasing Blue Thunder through the aqueducts, man! That movie is nothing but killer scene after killer scene. The movie loses points for the inane casting of Malcolm McDowell (an upper class Brit as a US Army warrant officer who goes on to become a colonel, really?), but it still has to be one of the most complete aviation films ever.

To this day, the Airwolf theme song is still my alarm sound on my cell phone. Even though I was a kid when the show came out, I still knew rotor tips can't exceede mach and even if the copter could, it would still only carry about 30 seconds worth of fuel. "FLIR in 1982, well ahead of our time" Now my car has a FLIR display in night mode. lol Comes in handy finding cops sitting in the dark at night and coyotes crossing the road. 11:20 I think I saw that same set in Buck Rogers. 28:30 It's got Jean Bruce Scott!!!

I don't know if it was inspired by Airwolf, but when I was a kid in the 80s there was a thing at a JC Penny's or a Foley's or something here in Texas where someone had come up with a wall that had a bunch of blinking lights and switches. So of course you throw a switch and it changes it. Even back then, I always thought that the designer did it as some kind of test, so if you figured it out and got something just right something interesting would happen. In that sense, it's kind of like some of the DEFCON badges of late (pre-pandemic). In fact, with computers being what they are now and such that might be pretty interesting. I'm channeling The Last Starfighter here, I think.

This series was also part of my childhood. The most impressive is, that it's still timeless - you could also replay it at modern times. I really like the sound-effects -> the howling, screeching etc. As i remember it already had flares (called sunbursts?). Amazing - 10/10 star series !

It's so cool that they actually used the set piece cockpits used for the internal shots as props for an episode. Even the rear projection they used , so cool! I love the old way of film making. And I heard that the majority for fliers in 80s chopper shows (there were a lot: Magnum, Air wolf, Blue Thunder, the one with that pink ugly thing) were a handful of pilots all former combat/airforce pilots. A nice gig for sure! And I love the keyboard of the commodore PET she has in the suitcase!

Thank you so much for this! One of my favorite Iconic TV shows. 1984-1987. 80 episodes. Strange to think- entire cast, save for Caitlin (Jean Bruce Scott, 65) have all passed away now. Yes, this whole concept was way ahead of it's time. I still love to imagine it's somehow real, an actual Skunkworks program. In actuality- a Bell 222 is basically a flying limousine, built for roomy comfort, comparatively quiet, while still pretty quick and reliable- but agile like a turkey. A very heavy helicopter.

I think my favorite episode is the one titled "Sweet Britches." There's a great scene though, that I think was in the first episode of season 2, where String and Dominic made a detailed inspection before powering up and taking off. Naturally they didn't show that each time, but it was nice to know that the Producers were willing to give a nod to the mechanics that kept that helicopter flying. It's also worth noting that those chain gun props when they were attached, had to be airworthy and meet FAA standards.

One of my favorite partial episodes I watch is season 2, episode 1, where Caitlin was first introduced, that last 10 minutes or so where String takes Airwolf to the town and kicks butt against the crooked sheriff and his gang. Gets the old blood a pumping. There are a couple of KZfaq videos by various people that have the long version of opening credits, one even in stereo that I listen and watch a lot too. Bought the DVD's when they were first released and within the last month bought the Blu-ray release. I had even checked into learning to fly a helicopter back then but the nearest place to learn was too far from my hometown. The music, the fast flying, and the protagonist having a wild name (stringfellow hawk) which is unique and the 'hawk' thing just fits with a pilot. Nice revisit! It's like the old A-Team series. Pappard, Mr. T, Dwight, and Starbuck (Dirk). Those guys had to be *the best* SF team because they could throw fragmentation grenades and never hurt anyone (just knock them around) and they could use armour from the inside of an elevator on the *inside* of a panel van but the gunfire never *marred* or *punctured* the van skin.
