This is a talk by Guy de la Bedoyere about Horemheb, the last king of the 18th Dynasty or first of the 19th Dynasty, who ruled 33 centuries ago. Based on the last chapter of my book to be published by Little, Brown in the summer of 2022. Horemheb is little known today but was one of Egypt's ablest and most important kings. He spent much of his reign removing traces of the reign of Akhenaten and usurping the monuments of Tutankhamun and Ay.
The title of this book has now been revised. It is now called:
PHARAOHS OF THE SUN
HOW EGYPT'S DESPOTS AND DREAMERS DROVE THE RISE AND FALL OF TUTANKHAMUN'S DYNASTY
Comments now adjusted all to be held for review thanks to those who abuse the facility.

An excellent discussion of this little known ruler. It is important that you have brought in the sociological aspect of Dynastic rule of Egypt. And hiw tge internal disputes within this combined family ( Mose’ / Hotep) who may have been distant relations but with the combining of power between upper and Lower Egypt was able to create the 18th Dynasty and the re-emergence of wealth that causes a nation to prosper. The infighting within such Dynasties can easily be seen in the current Dynasty of the UK. You do touch upon that the power of the religious faction of Egypt most likely set off the division between Amenhotep IV and the priests at Karnak. no Dynastic Ruler tolerates being told what their prerogatives are and will react to the psychological manipulation of priests over the populace. This may even b3 a reason for Amenhotep III to have erected the golden city of Atun , th3 creator God, recently unearthed. I would consider that Amenhotep III had even built the temple of the , and when Karnak tried to exert power over Amenhotep IV, he rebelled, changed his name to Akhenaten, closed Karnak snd built his new city at Armana. Then when Tutankhamen took the throne Aye his father’ Vizier and possibly a family member in keeping with the nepotistic nature of such Dynasties and a priest of Amun, stirred up trouble for a child king. Although as you state Horemheb is not recognized during the reign of Akhenaten, to have come in to this storm, he would have had to have been known to Tutankhaten, who would have sought his advice. Such things are not unusual as lower ranking soldiers being around in a royal palace would be normal as part of the royal guard and it would be easy for a child to befriend such guards. Such was the case for the “little calagari” or as we call him Caligula. He mat have advised Tutankhaten to re- open Karnak, and even to take the name Tutankhamen fr practical purposes. You attribute the dismantling f the temple of Aten to Ahoremheb. This would make some political sense, as from the computer reconstruction of a relief there that matches with a chest in Tutankhamen’s tomb, of a battle screen, ( probably one which Horemheb fought for Tutankhamen against Libyans) it makes sense if Tutankhamen was attributing this victory to Aten. It is likely that Horemheb was at the border with theHittites and even with the letter tablet found at Hattusha , from Ankhetsetamun to the Hittite King requesting a prince be sent to become her husband and join the two empires, Horemheb would have had to grant the safe passage across the border. And after the death of that prince,en route, needed to stay there to prevent a war. That Horemheb’s mummy is considered missing may actually be due to the removal by 5h3 priests along with 5he other mummies that were cashe’d . There is a particular mummy in the Museum of the Rosicrucians , in Santa Cruz California, that is ,listed as a nobleman of the 18th Dynasty but remarkably has the crossed arms reserved for Pharaohs if the 18 and 19th Dynasties. It is known that the Cache was raided in the 19th Century and definitely the Mummy of Ramses I was sold out if Egypt and wound up in the Niagara Falls Museum. To be sold to the Museum of Emory College Georgia, confirmed to be a royal mummy and finally returned to Egypt.

Well done Guy. You've done justice to an unjustly neglected king. I'm so pleased that the final chapter of your book will cover Horemheb; you'll be giving us 'something new ' and more of the ancient Egypt that we so love. I like to think that Horemheb knew exactly where Tutankhamun was buried but maybe out of loyalty to the young king that he had served or even out of affection, he let Tutankhamun rest in peace. Tutankhamun's public monuments were a different matter; we can forgive him for usurping those but the boy king's tomb was 'out of sight, out of mind' and he may have been content to leave it at that. If he was responsible for the destruction of Ay's tomb, his feelings towards the older man may have been entirely different. We will never really know. Have you read Mika Waltari's (1949) novel 'The Egyptian'? It's beautifully written and well researched, with Horemheb as a forceful and dynamic character. Whenever I try to imagine him he always looks like Victor Mature from the 1954 Hollywood adaptation of the novel. LPH to you.

Thank you for your comments. I do remember that book and the motion picture. The Egyptian is on KZfaq at the moment: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d9-iabiLzaeWkWQ.html I watched it again the other day but saw it originally about 50 years ago and read the book at the same time. The film omits Tutankhamun and Ay, but the depiction of Horemheb by Victor Mature has some merit, and the portrayal of Akhenaten as suffering from epilepsy and hallucinations is interesting. I particularly remember the scene where Horemheb is presented with a Hittite iron sword and is staggered by the game-changing new metal.

@@ClassCiv In the old film usurper General HOREMHEB established his "legitimacy" as king by marrying Akhenaten's ambitious power hungry sister (played by Gene Tierney), thus becoming connected to "the royal family" by marriage HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD!

Public monuments of Tutankhamen had already been usurped by Ay by the time Horemheb usurped them himself in several cases. This may say more about how he felt about Ay than Tutankhamen. After all, Ay’s tomb seems to have been desecrated in a specific way whereas Tut’s was restored following early robbery attempts.

great video, but something archaeologists and historians ignore....how did the Egyptians make straight deep cuts in stone that are only mm wide? How did they create circular bore holes in granite with hand held bronze chisels?
