Baldwin and Saladin were rulers of their time. They were ruthless rulers. However for their time they were indeed mild and thoughtful men. Both men respected each other. The film softens history a fair bit. The film made me look up the real histories of Saladin and Baldwin.

Think you're buying too much into the myth versus reality.

@@MorroTreece I think you're conflating historical events with dramatized dialogue and filler. There are many rulers throughout history who were hated by their own people or just simply existed to exist.. there were very few who changed the fabric of their societies for the better, with no other motive than the betterment of their own people (those tend to be the ones who are assassinated by nobility/senate members/council members). This is a story of two of these rare leaders meeting as enemies, but showing the utmost respect for their enemies (both leaders, and soldiers).

There is no such thing as benevolence in high-stakes politics. If you're benevolent, you are naive, and if you are naive, you'll get stomped by the most rudimentary tricks in the book.

When you look up their history, you find out they were highly intelligent and educated men. Masters of the Lands. And formidable in battle.

Let me tell you this Michael from someone who study islamic culture : muslim do not fear death instead they seek it in battles. In this scene, historically, Saladdin came to "revenge" not to conquor Jerusalem. He got what he came for and therefore decided to retreat.

theres a reason why baldwin wanted godfrey's son balien to become king in this movie instead of sybilla's current husband guy de lusignan, who wanted war with salahdin. if he had actually agreed to become king, the christians would have held onto the jeruselam for a lot longer and richard the lionheart would not have had to ride into battle and fight with salahdin for 3 yrs nonstop. idiots, the lot of them.
