Alanda hilariously describing the chestburster alien as a "skinless vampire squirrel" is precisely why this channel is "streets ahead" of other reaction channels.

Fun fact: They wanted a real reaction in the alien chest burster scene. The cast had no idea what was going to happen. All it said in the script was, "This thing emerges." They did thought it was a little suspicious why everyone else was wearing rain gear and had plastic shields. But there reaction was true and genuine. Absolute horror haha.

I was so excited when my little sister was finally old enough to share this film with her. At one point she asked "when is it [the facehugger] going to grow up?" I answered "it is grown up. Isn't it scary?" "No" she said flatly, obviously annoyed at how lame she thought the monster was. About 10 minutes later we reached the chestburster and I just hear her squeak "I take it back 😨". The next day we watched the sequel. She texted her boyfriend that she was watching a scary movie. He asked why if it's scary, to which she replied "because it's good". It was so worth the 18 year wait to share my favorite films with her 😄

Yeah, that deleted scene where she comes across Dallas (and Brett) all cocooned up is to suggest that the Alien can create eggs from putting some virus into a victim that uses the material and DNA of their body to form an egg. Thus the life cycle is just Egg> Facehugger> Chestburster> Adult> Host> Egg. James Cameron admitted that because Ridley Scott kept this scene out of the theatrical cut, it enabled him to come up with the Queen Alien in his sequel since the total life cycle of the Alien was not revealed.
@gordondavis6168
@gordondavis6168 3 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t have to be so binary. If there is a Queen with a hive to tend to her, then the Queen can lay eggs. If there is just a Warrior, then the Warrior can transform people into eggs in order to get a hive established. Even on earth, slime molds can be a moving animal or a stationary fungus due to conditions, female frogs and groupers can turn into males as needed, and a Queen-less ant hive can feed royal jelly to a worker and make a new Queen.

@Bawookles
@Bawookles 3 жыл бұрын
@@frankyhorn2475 Oh, when Aliens came out in 1986, I was a bit shocked by how much Cameron changed about the Alien! Not only with the life cycle change, but in the first movie the creature is basically indestructible. Even when it gets exposed to insane amounts of heat from the shuttle's engine, which should vaporize it, it just gets shot away from the shuttle, technically it could still be alive with how the movie presented it. In Aliens, people were dropping them with shotguns!!! It was a BIG retcon, but Cameron did it to turn it into an action movie. Basically all the resultant Alien movies and comic books are based around the lore Cameron created for it, not the lore that Dan O'Bannon created for it, so that more or less got lost, which I think is a shame in a way. I thought the Alien from the first movie was far more intriguing, scary, and ALIEN than the big squishy insects that Cameron retconned them to be.
@NoelleMar
@NoelleMar 3 жыл бұрын
@@Bawookles honestly still not a fan of Aliens due to how jarring the difference was to me lol. Not in terms of specific lore because sure the first alien was almost Superman levels powerful. XD But in terms of tone. The first one was so detailed and beautifully shot, it’s realism (in spite of the subject matter) turned into abject horror. The second one had little subtlety and I certainly don’t remember it being particularly scary. I know I’m in the vast minority on that opinion, but I’m sure part of my reaction was how many people loved the second one as much as the first. I was like... how?? Maybe if they were different franchises I would have liked it for what it was. The terminator movies for example weren’t as jarringly different for me in spite of the tonal shift.
@Bawookles
@Bawookles 3 жыл бұрын
@@NoelleMar I totally agree with you, Noelle. Ridley Scott's ALIEN is just art. The way he frames every shot and his attention to detail, very Stanley Kubrick. James Cameron is a great action director, but you would never confuse his stuff with being terribly artistic. You need to see Ridley's masterpiece, "Blade Runner", if you haven't already.

I'm thrilled you chose to react to this one, Alanda, even as a rewatch. _Alien_ is my favorite movie. I've seen it on the big screen with an audience five times and discover something new each time that I do. Every character in this movie is someone I've worked with and to think my life could depend on getting along with them in a pinch is the scariest thing for me. There are hours of neat-o trivia you can learn in the DVD documentary, but here's something that Helen Mirren had to say about it recently in her MasterClass, Helen Mirren Teaches Acting. I don't think many fans know this. "The first time I understood what was possible was I was privileged enough to read the script of _Alien._ I was up for a role in it, which I didn’t get, sadly. But I was privileged to read the original script, Ridley Scott’s script of _Alien._ And it was brilliant, because the way it was written, all the characters had names like Ripley, or, I don’t know, Tonn, they had these weird names that could be male or female. There was not a single direction in the script that said whether this was a man or a woman. It didn’t say, ‘Ripley is a tall, athletic woman with a fierce determination in her eyes,’ that sort of stage direction which you often get. So annoying. There were no stage directions at all for any of the characters, so any of the characters could have been played by a man or a woman. And that was such a liberating idea for me. I had never thought of that before. Thought that was possible. And there it was, laid out for me in this wonderful script of _Alien._ And from that moment on, it really transformed my thinking about who could play what and why. And _Alien_ was quite a long time ago and it’s taken us all--and especially the world of producers and writers and directors--to catch up, and indeed the audience, to catch up.”

Part of what made this creature so convincing was not only thanks to the amazing design but the actor behind it, without the costume the dude was 7 feet tall, with the costume he was 8 feet, on top of that he was an acrobat. They had to insist he wear a safety harness for the scene where he was hanging on the ceiling with chains cause he was confident he could do it without one XD but for everyone's peace of mind they made sure he had one, dude could legit climb up the set walls even in that insane costume.

I loved your re-watch reaction to Alien. You said that you wanted some details involving the film, but first I thought that I would mention my first experience in relation to this film before I go onto other points. I saw this on a big screen when it originally was released in the UK in 1979 (showing my age here!), I managed to break a tooth watching it - although I didn't realise it at the time - I was chewing on a hard mint sweet when the face hugger exploded out of the egg and I bit down on the mint and caused a molar to break, however because the cinema was warm and I so focused on watching the film I only really noticed when I got outside into the very cold air, then I felt it - so next day managed to see a dentist to cover the broken part as a temporary measure to save the tooth, the final solution was a Gold crown which is still there to this day! There are a couple of interesting stories about the chest bursting scene apparently the cast hadn't been given the entire picture as to what was going to happen, so when it occurred those reactions are genuine and poor Veronica Cartwright managed to accidentally stand in the precise position to get covered in fake blood. Ridley Scott was always under pressure from Fox to cut costs and on one occasion when some studio executives turned up, he showed them some scenes which included the chest burster they rushed out of the screening room and threw up in the car park! The person responsible for all the alien designs is the late Swiss Artist H. R. Giger a lot of his art involves the idea of human bodies and machines in a close interconnected relationship for which he used the term "biomechanical".Having got the majority of his books, including Necronomicon which includes the image Necronomicon IV the one that Ridley Scott picked out as the basis of the Alien design, I can confirm that some of the images contained within his books can be quite disturbing. Since you are going to be watching the whole Alien series, in relation to Aliens I would certainly recommend James Cameron's extended Director's Cut, if you haven't already seen that version. Back to Alien the production design and the attention to detail is just unbelievable, which is something of trademark with Ridley Scott's films, although I suspect that you know this anyway, since you have no doubt already seen his other classic Blade Runner, if you haven't for that film you should watch the "The Final Cut" version.

The crew is out of their league, it is similar to sending an eighteen-wheel trucker to clean up a nuclear reactor spill. The Company sort of intentionally sent an incompetent crew; the Company did not want the crew to actually be able to kill the Alien. I have been involved in several medical and natural disaster emergencies and it is amazing how normally intelligent people can do stupid things in such circumstances. No, it wasn't all Bilbo's fault, it was the company's doing. (It's great that you've already seen the second movie, so no spoiler warnings necessary.) One of the awesome, realistic aspects of the second movie is that the same company pins the blame for the lost ship all on Ripley, knowing they were actually at fault. Probably because they collected insurance claims on the lost ship and ore. Corporate CYA at it's best.

Yes - I didn't think this would work either. But I gave it a chance - and I'm glad I did. ALIEN is a film you can watch over and over and over again, and see new things every time.

Let's re-cap. They come across a giant alien with it's chest blown outward like as Dallas says "like it exploded from inside". This alien is sitting on top of thousands of eggs of which the content of one has attached itself to Kane and it has a tube down his throat. So apparently Dallas & Lambert but especially Dallas are apparently so incredibly stupid they can't put a massively obvious 2+2 together.

Hmm let's see....do I have any interesting trivia on this movie? Well let's see....apologies if somebody already mentioned these or if I get any of the details wrong. Ripley was originally written as a character that could be played by any gender. They were open to the character being either a man or a woman, but Sigourney Weaver just nailed the audition so the part went to her. And thus cinema history was made and the world discovered one of its greatest stars ever. :) The scene where Dallas, Lambert, and Kane entered the derelict ship and went into the Space Jockey's chamber(the giant dead alien pilot), they wanted that room to be HUGE. But they couldn't quite build it to the specifications they wanted so they just made it as big as they could and then used children in little child-sized spacesuits to make the room seem that much bigger. :P One of the big sticking points for Ridley Scott about the Alien's appearance is that he didn't want it to just look like a guy in a rubber suit(even though it was totally just a guy in a rubber suit XD). So they made the suit itself as detailed and gross as possible, and never shot the whole Alien at once, just giving sparse and fleeting glimpses of it to preserve the illusion. And the person they cast to play the alien was a man named Bolaji Badejo, who one of the casting agents discovered accidentally in a bar, basically because he was 6 feet 10 inches and had very unusual proportions. You can really see his incredible height in the scene where the Alien kills Parker and Lambert, and you can tell that it just towers over them. Anyway, that's all I got! :P Great video as always Alanda! Thanks for sharing your reactions with us!

I just saw this in the theater for the first time in maybe in 42 years (1979). They've been showing all sorts of older classics. I was blown away especially as I was the only one in the theater with all the isolation and darkness. It was so intense I started crying. As a child I never knew how intense it really was! You can't hide in the middle of a theater all alone! And it was made so effectively!!

The end credits music (Sinfonia No 2 The Romantic) was originally just placeholder music while the main score was being written. Director Ridley Scott liked this calm piece of music so much that he used it in place of the end theme Jerry Goldsmith had composed. Goldsmith had a fit but, he and Scott later worked it out.

Jerry Goldsmith made exactly the right decision here by not creating an actual musical score (except sparingly, especially at the very end), but weaving a atmospheric ambience that fills you with dread from the very first frame. This movie really stands the test of time and holds up very well even today. The final 10 minutes or so, from the activation of the self-destruct to Ripley's final showdown with the alien is heart-pumping through and through.

I'm a 76 y.o. man who enjoys watching a lot of YT movie & music reactions. I just watched your reaction to Arrival, the goat of sci fi films for me, and moved over here to watch you do this one. Wish you hadn't seen it before; 1st reactions are always best. Mostly, I love watching younger generations discover the environs of mine (1950s, 60s & 70s). Your personality & responses charmed me -- I'll go on to suggest see what other flights you watch & maybe subscribe. Congrats on a well-done channel -- better than most*

5:21 Now at _this_ point in the movie, it makes _no_ sense that _no_ one has said anything along the lines of, "Look. We're not equipped for search and rescue. We're not equipped for search and _recovery._ We're not an _exploration_ vessel. We're a _freighter._ We carry freight through territory that is _supposed_ to be well established, well known, and _secure._ We have our function and this is not _it._ "Now there _are_ vessels and crews for functions like this but the _Nostromo_ is not _one_ of them. Let's just go home and leave these readings for one of _these_ vessels to investigate, okay?"
@Buskieboy
@Buskieboy 3 жыл бұрын
The crew are part of a team that run a "towing vessel" the Nostromo. It hauls that huge multi-domed ore refinery. The ship that detached and then landed is where the crew live and holds the sleeping chambers. The refinery is so huge that it has it's own environment, like rain. @28:17 The bodies glued to the wall are Dallas, obviously, but the really fucked up one with the dead eyes looking like some kind of demon is most likely Brett, since he's the first taken and therefore the most decomposed.

There is a good reason that Ash is . Watching Kane so closely at the table. Because in a cut scene an it was cut for a good reason. When they scanned Kane wall the facehugger was attached . Ripley notices a strange object next to Kane's lung . When she asks Ash what it is he just says I don't know. So Ash know that the thing on Kane's face . Put something in him an was just waiting for. It to do something . That's why I love getting the DVDs of movies like this. In case anyone is wondering wich DVD it's on . The one that comes in the Alien Predator total destruction collection .

I saw this in the same ex-Cinerama theater that "2001: A Space Odyssey" had played. The ad campaign gave us no clue about what the tale was about or why "In Space No One Can Hear You Scream" applied. Using Earth nautical themes, this is a freighter crew that's been ordered by The Company to explore Skull Island because there's been a radio transmission. Aside from, say, the doctor/Science Officer, no one has much scientific training to figure out what to do once they land on the island. Models, matte paintings, and children are superior to today's DFX, which is why it's a Classic. As I recall, "Lambert" is a stand in for us, the audience.
