In today's video, we chat about Brian Wilson returning to the producer's chair, the guys being a huge concert draw, and an album that was the result of their past outshining their present. What do you guys think of this album? I don't think I mentioned a rating in the video, so I'll say 6 or 7 out of 10. "Just Once In My Life" is incredible!

I could not agree more that "Just Once in my Life" is the crown jewel on this LP. It's a perfect, powerful closing piece. Talk about leaving off on a high note! I never understood why this track was never included on subsequent collections. It would have fit beautifully on "10 Years of Harmony." This one is PURE HARMONY. The vocals are indeed impassioned. Such a lost opportunity in not re-releasing this on other compilations.

In1976 in the Uk the second biggest selling album of the year was The Beach Boys 20 Golden greats, which was advertised on TV and had a massive promotional push complete with women in bikinis with surf boards in shop windows. The 15 Big Ones seemed like a cynical attempt to cash in on that exposure or that was how it was seen by some of the music press. I enjoyed your review and have owned it since it came out. the only track that has any enduring appeal for me is Just Once in My life. The 45 of Rock and Roll Music made the lower reaches of our charts but was outsold by a re issue of Good Vibrations. Mike Love was interviewed on national radio to promote RnR Music and was asked how he felt about it being outshone by the earlier record and he said he wasn't surprised as Good Vibrations was a much better record. The Good Vibrations album you showed came out a bit later here and made the charts but was not a big seller. The Beach Boys were largely written off here by the mid seventies until they were booked to play 2nd on the bill to Elton John at Wembley Stadium in the summer of 1975. Also on the bill were the largely unknown(in the UK) Eagles and below them was Joe Walsh with Ricky Fataar. What should have been Eltons moment of triumph was completely overshadowed by the Beach Boys. I say me and 72000 Elton John fans went to that show and me and 72000 Beach Boys fans went home. Thanks for the insightful review.

Just left a comment on Dennis Wilson's POB review. True and simple thought .... whatever the Beach Boys put out was Loved. This was the bands reboot to the public and being put back in the spotlight. Thru The trials and tribulations they have lasted and are still great in concert. The Best. The Beach Boys are America's Band.

This is an album that I've been trying hard to like for about forty years - It was such a let down for teenagers like myself whose primary gateway to The Beach Boys music was "Endless Summer" and "Spirit Of America". We were all used to that pristine sound and perfect harmonies, so coming after those records "15 Big Ones" was a bit of a traumatic juxtaposition. I've told this story before somewhere in the VC about some slightly older friends that I had, and one of them had an old 50's car given to him by his grandfather. We always cruised around town listening to "Endless Summer" on his 8-Track player. It was perfect accompaniment to going to the beach, drive-in movie theatres, county fairs, etc. So naturally when "15 Big Ones" came out we were a receptive audience - My friends were so disappointed that they decided to eventually put it out in the road and drive over it several times, lol.. I have fond memories of that period though, and I have frequently returned to it, hoping that I'll start to like it more but for me it never really delivers, although I do like about five tracks on it. "Had To Phone Ya" is a good tune, and I like the "Palisades Park" cover, because it sounds like something off of "Love You". And when I saw the Mike Love-Bruce Johnston version of The Beach Boys last year, the second song that they did was "It's OK", and it was very effective...But unfortunately I have to say that "15 Big Ones" is overall, one of my least favorite of their albums - I prefer "M.I.U", "Light Album", and "Keeping The Summer Alive" over it personally - But that being said, I'm always hoping to one day acquire an old 8-Track copy for sentimental reasons...Great review!

I remember getting that as a 10 year old and reading the back cover for HOURS. It was an educational exercise for me. I learned about musical instruments I never heard of before, like a Clavinet and a Moog Bass. Always wanted to know what those instruments look like. Also, the names of some of the people who played them. I began to realise quickly that the Beach Boys operation was much larger than just five guys--and it sounded like it. I would listen to the album, and try to pick up where the Moog Bass was! It was great for the imagination

Great review again, thanks. I bought this just 2 weeks ago and I'm liking it a lot. Very catchy tunes! There was a 50's revival going on mid to late 70s, at least there was in the UK, and it was pretty big....you had TV show Happy Days, JL's Rock N Roll album, and bands such as Stray Cats, Darts, and...no sniggering now....Showaddywaddy....thats just off the top of me head....so now after hearing 15 Big Ones I'm thinking this record fits in well with what was going on then, in a way....looking at it from within a certain context.....cheers

Another master review. I may have to give this album another listen after your careful examination. I bought this record when it came out, based on the 'Brian's Back' hype. It ended up at a used record store within weeks, cause I couldn't stand the forced feeling and the slickness. I still hate that creepy logo - they need to drop that. But I'm willing to listen to the CD I have and give the songs another listen. I didn't like 'Love You' either when it came out, but now, I couldn't do without it.

I love the Rock n' Roll Music version that's on the Made in California box which is not only longer but has classic Beach Boys-style background falsetto vocals. Don't know why they mixed those vocals out, though I can hear a hint of them on the released version if I listen carefully.

The album sold well on the back of Endless Summer(US), 20 Golden Greats (UK) but also on the back of all the albums after and including Pet Sounds that had pushed boundaries with wonderful snippets off Smile gradually developing albums that really didn't need those Smile tracks to showcase the Beach Boys talents, So Tough and Holland cemented by the great In Concert album showing what they could do both old and new. 15 Big Ones was meant to be 15 new ones on one LP and 15 old ones on other to fill the double album gatefold cover. Could it have worked? Think so but if they lost to a fire some of the tapes to music made during the period up to 15 Big Ones maybe they were rushed to capitalise on their old hits successful releases and didn't really look at some of the early 70s quality cut that did make the like of the Surf's Up and Holland albums. Rushing albums out to ride the crest of the wave of popularity worked in the sixties but they really should have taken care later to ensure the quality of the final product 15 Big Ones, the LA and even Still Cruisin could have been better if they had taken a little more care, fans wanted new material if they wanted old ones they could get the 'Best Of' albums The Beach Boys over the years have made some wonderful covers but they been used too frequently to show case the bands talents instead of their own material. Who wanted to hear in later years , Rock n Roll Music which didn't do well in the UK compared to Lady Lyndia which did, something new! TWGMTR was well received because it was mostly original material (and maybe a bit more promotion)

im in England and here in 1973 commercial radio started and the biggest was londons capital radio who played beach boys constantly throughout 1974/5 and over here when 15 big ones was released, many radio stations had it as no1 . certainly the rest it was top 5. at the same time 20 golden greats was nationally no1 for months, during our hottest summer ever and the singles rock n roll music and good vibrations ( re issue ) were in the chart together. I bought 15 big ones when released and because we had been starved of new material, we all thought it wonderful. the beach boys have always been huge here and remain so. being honest though I think they were better being more progressive, as in sunflower to Holland period. roger scott of capital radio always did a beach boys special upon the release of new BBS albums from 15 big ones onwards, with interviews and concert excerpts and of course, tracks from their latest offering, right up to keepin the summer alive. when endeless summer came out in 1974, the UK copy was a single album with the same amount of tracks, better value and I bought that too. from then on, I collected them all.

Really Great review and retrospective. Like many of the real true Beach Boy fans I was excited and eagerly awaiting the next deep/great album that was to come after Surf's up, Holland, the 1974 live album and that era. Expecting that Fans like me were disheartened when 15 Big Ones came out. It seemed and later proved be the end of their progression as a GREAT group. Had the era I speak of not happened this could have been seen in a more positive light. As you point out there were some fairly good tracks on the album. But as you also pointed out this album was thrown together and rushed out to capitalize on their touring successes. Sadly I'll always remember this as the death nail to how great this great group could have been. The California myth, girls, surfing and cars were and continue to be a fun topic to think of when listening to great Beach Boy music BUT OH BOY how much more there could have been if they were allowed to keep growing.

The liner notes to the "15 Big Ones/Love You" twofer CD don't convey the sense of disappointment that was felt by Beach Boys fans when "15 Big Ones" came out. I had just turned 15, and had come to the Beach Boys years earlier because my older brother had some of their earlier albums. I bought "Spirit of America" when it came out and filled in some of the gaps in my album collection with reissues of their albums from 1964-1973, and then in the first half of 1976 the "Brian is back" hype campaign started, leading me to expect that a masterpiece was on the way. I still have my copies of "New Times" and "Crawdaddy" from the spring of '76--the only issues of those now long-gone magazines that I ever bought--with cover stories on the Beach Boys. The latter had two issues containing an interview with Brian, particularly praising the song "California Feeling," which, surprisingly, didn't appear on "15 Big Ones." The Beach Boys were also the subjects of cover stories in "People" and "TV Guide;" the NBC special "The Beach Boys: It's O.K." was first shown on August 5, 1976, shortly after the release of the album. It was John Belushi, of course, not Jim, who appeared with Dan Aykroyd in the surfing skit. My favourite song on the album is "It's O.K.;" I agree that it should have been released earlier, in order to be a summertime hit. The first time I saw the Beach Boys live was in 1982, and they opened the concert with that song. "Had to Phone Ya" was the B-side of "It's O.K." "It's O.K." was, for some reason, reissued as the B-side of "It's Gettin' Late" in 1985. "Rock and Roll Music" was released as a single a couple of months before the album, with "The TM Song" as the B-side. "Susie Cincinnati" was finally released as an A-side in the fall of '76, with "Everyone's in Love with You" (two of the best songs on the album) on the B-side.

Ha ha! Thanks for that at the beginning... nightmares for me tonight!! Anyway, nice in-depth review. For me 15 Big ones is a dichotomy. Over the years tracks from it have found their way onto my in-car tape/CD/MP3 playlist but it doesn't get much use when I think 'Hey, I fancy listening to a Beach Boys album'. The cover looks really uncomfortable. The photo's look Victorian, like they have a rod up their backs and have been told to say 'cheese'. Especially Dennis. I think that what really puts me off this one is that the whole Brian's back thing seems to have been the tipping point between the forward thinkers and the oldies make money factions where the forward thinkers lost. You could argue that overall Brian's return was a detriment to the future of the band. Hmmm... food for thought!

Yeah, I have a weird relationship with this album too. It was one of the first records I ended up with when I started collecting a handful of years ago. I thought it was fine without thinking much of it, but as I listened to more/better Beach Boys albums & learned about that unfortunate backstory (with some details you went over I didn't even know about), I'd be lying if I said I didn't sour on it a bit with time. For every solid cut there's a dull poorly-conceived cover. It's weird for sure. Really enjoying these retrospectives BTW. you know there's absolutely no greater difference between a groups 2 consecutive new (studio) albums than the Beach Boys Holland and then 15 Big Ones. In just about every aspect imaginable. I've always liked this album though I sometimes think about what a cool record it would have been without the covers and band recordings of songs written by Dennis(maybe River Song, Rainbows). Barnyard Blues would have been a cool addition instead of a cover song and Santa Ana Winds had been around for a years by this time, that would have sounded great.(the original version is better than the one on Keepin'' The Summer Alive.) Rollin' Up To Heaven would have been a cool, fun tune to add. These songs would have kept the creative streak they'd been on in the early 70's alive. I do love the version of Just Once in my Life from this album.

The big difference between 15 Big Ones and Holland (which is one of the all time great albums) is that Holland was chock-a-block with new ideas where 15 Big Ones is filled with rehashed ideas, rehashed songs, nothing new is brought to the album. It’s too bad because they obviously had the chips to do better. It is the start of the Beach Boys decline. Sad.

Over all I have a love hate relationship with this album. My favorite track on this album is same song. I feel like it's one of their best songs ever.In fact I'm genuinely surprised you don't like it. Another great track is back home I thought that baritone Brian's vocals were superb. But I don't really like rock and roll music mostly because of Mike loves vocals it kinda sounds stretched if that makes sense. The first 12 minutes of this video is the most interesting comments you've said on any BBs related video. Every word is unfortunately so true. I listened to this album when it came out after a very long wait after the Holland album and what I heard coming out of the speakers honestly broke my heart. From 1967 up to 1973 and mostly without Brian The Beach Boys had become a very good band. As you said in one of your Q&A video's you had to constantly defend the group. I was having to exactly the same until Sunflower Surfs Up CATP & Holland, at last the BBs were being accepted as a rock band. And then 15 Big Ones came out and that was the end of that. Sorry but in my opinion It's OK is a fantastic song but the rest of the album is mostly forgettable, the vocals on some of the songs are dreadful. This is not only my opinion from 1976, but I listened to it the other day and nothing's changed I'm afraid. Carl & Dennis didn't want to go down this road, but from what I gather from you opening statement Mike All & Brian felt it was the best way forward because that's what the people wanted, but the fact is after 8 albums and converting fans of The Greatful Dead, The Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Elton John and so many others to eventually go out and buying their albums They go and blow it all on this. It should've called it 15 BIG BIG MISTAKES.

I didn't like this album the first few times I listened to it. I guess I was thinking "how does this follow Holland?" Well, it doesn't! It follows Endless Summer and Spirit of America. It's not the mature Beach Boys of Holland or Sunflower, it's sort of Summer Days and Summer Nights 1976. I like it a lot more now, I know it's an album most BB's fans diss, but I just take it for what it is. "It's OK" should have been a hit. I like that the musician credits are very detailed on this one, wish they had done that for more of their albums.

Always liked this album...It does have some weak cuts, but are outnumbered by absolutely great songs like It's Ok - how was this song not a smash top five hit...? And Carl absolutely rocks on Palisades Park...Blows away Freddy Cannons original...Everyones in Love with You is a sweet ballad, and Susie Cincinati is a fun, catchy rocker... Dennis sounds great on In the Still of the Night and Brian and Carl both shine on Just Once in my Life...Those are the cuts that make this album a winner after a long four year wait since Holland...

Hey man! Brian appeared super briefly on with, get this, Bruce on April 20, 1973 at the The Palladium in Hollywood during the encore. Apparently he did not play any songs, he basically walked around the stage looking at the audience. Bruce joined in for a few encore songs. Danny Hutton from Three Dog Night basically told Brian it would be cool if he went on stage, so he did!

I had just got Holland at the time and was really looking forward to a new album. Boy, did I get a shock. I tried really hard to like it, I really tried!! But it was like a very poor remake of the old studio stuff from pre 65. In the Beach Boys story I still get frustrated at the way the band had reinvented themselves and then Carl and Dennis got pushed aside and they became an oldies band pulling in the dollars and losing their soul!

I last listened to this about 10 years ago and was bored stiff by it, but it seems to have grown on me in the intervening decade. It's a great shame that Carl and Dennis were sidelined, and there's too much Mike and Al on this for sure, but I love Brian's tracks, and overall I like the Spector-pastiche production. I'd agree with 6 out of 10.

I think his picture on the cover portrays a Brian who's not ready to be back. The covers on this album don't really thrill me and my feelings of the originals, eh, it's OK. "Had To Phone Ya" is about the only song I'd phone home about, although if you count American Spring I guess it could be considered a cover. So my favorite song on the album is a cover kinda. Do you know the significance of the five linked rings on the bottom of the back cover? Sort of looks like the Olympic rings, although wrong colors. Just curious if you know what they represent? I doubt the Beach Boys would put the "mascot" (if Olympic rings could be called a mascot) of Hawthorne HIgh's crosstown rival on the cover. i.ytimg.com/vi/fAYl1kWs-FU/maxresdefault.jpg

well , your backstory was absolutely correct...the whole "brian 's back" campaign was part of brian's therapy program and economically driven on the part of warner bros. according to dennis , he felt it was a mistake putting brian in complete charge after such a long absence , adding "i hated to give them (the fans) this" .

A really painful album. Holland was (and still is) amazing. Just imagine waiting 3 years for this album to come out. I honestly can't think of an album that i despise more than 15 Big Ones. "Keepin the Summer alive" and "Summer in paradise" are obviously worse albums, no doubt about it. But 15 Big Ones was the album that started the decline of the band, 15 Big ones was the album that turned the BB into a sad nostalgia act and that is WAY worse than just putting out a poor album. To this day i still see copies of 15 Big Ones for sale everywhere and it's easily the cheapest BB record on the market. You can easily get a near mint copy of the album for 5$ but even then... It's not selling at all! No one wants this thing. And that's good.

Not a good album. Just Once In My Life is awesome. Palisades Park has a good Carl vocal. It's Ok is catchy and Chapel of Love is interesting.I saw them on this tour and the show had a bad feel to it.Brian was a Zombie off to the back.He seemed to be doodling on his own regardless what song the band was playing Mike was a jerk.I had 10th row seats and I enjoyed heckling him a few times. A few years earlier I was lucky enough to see the Holland tout in Toronto's Massey Hall. They were late by 3 hours due to Customs at the border. They came on and played a Great Great show. This was their best lineup. Not a greatest hits show.If you can believe it one of the encores was Jumping Jack Flash. Best show I have ever attended. Even without Brian this was their pinnacle.Enjoy your reviews.p.s.Love You is in my top 5 B.B.s
