that's the true fascinating tragedy about Garp, like...he values freedom, doing as he likes. but he's also a proud hero, and fond of the marines. but he's also a family man, who loves his grandsons. and because he's pulled in so many directions at once he can only act in a fundamentally half-hearted manner, kicking himself the whole way, and ultimately letting everybody down. it's frustrating, but also deeply relatable and human.

Yeah, One Piece is very much a story of a "world" where we have our hero that we follow, but his importance is only as significant as the world itself that surrounds him. Funny enough, according to Oda had he just stuck with the 'main plot' the story would have been over years ago, but his love for the world and wanting to expand on it and show people the lore and history and all the people and the places kept him adding things and doing flashbacks, etc.

well recent one piece forgets even the main cast and focus too much on small fews.

Actually alot of anime put side characters a side story.. but the difference with Oda's writing each side story is that it connects with the other story or rather the One piece world, not all, but most... example, Oars' hat origin :) But other animes failed to do that becuz if they put some side story to each character they would fail to connect the relation to the plot or the story building

@@ConfusedBear. Not really. One Piece has always made other characters in an arc the center piece of a story. Vivi, the Shandorians, Boa, Ace, etc. It's maybe easy to miss during recruitment arcs where the focus is on characters who haven't officially joined the crew in full, which is where they get their own focus (Robin and Franky during W7 and Enies Lobby; Brook during Thriller Bark; and so on) but on those occasions it just happens to be that the characters in question are the ones with a direct tie to what is happening in the arc. Oda is pretty consistent about that. The other factor is that when you have an entire crew of people like in the current arcs, you need to distribute them around so they all contribute something rather than just standing around watching things happen. This is, again, something Oda is consistent about. Not every crew mate has to be the MVP of an arc, but they definitely all contribute.

Franky, who was supposed to learn so much in technology island of egghead is also not given development. Sanji as always is hype tool only. Infact u can google hypetool and sanji comes up. Chopper is also dead forgotten since god knows how long. Just a mascot (which oda promised he wouldn't make 1 in one piece). Brook is also non existence since whole cake. Nami hasn't gotten single development. She had very very rare few moment but nothing more.

Ors Jr was just Oda flexing his writing skills at us. and its so wild. I say his writing takes a bit of a dive the next few many arcs (likely do to his overworked helf problems) but man... arc of Wano is so freaking well written that its on hole other level

Not to mention how horrifying, like she could legitimately just turn you to stone and break you, and that's it now you're just dead

Spoiler for Wano arc It's Tama , the little girl with power tame animals. We see her earn money by weaving and selling hats, and we even see her do it with Ace in her flashback.
