Shaw's fate was truly awful. She fixed David only to be seduced into being yet another xenomorph host.

I dislike how they treated her character like this...she needed more story she deserved to learn more :(

It's so upsetting to me that they got rid of Shaw to focus more on David. Was not really interested in David's god complex that was hinted at in Prometheus; was more interested in finding out with Shaw _why_ the engineers created humans. Covenant tried way too hard to be profound, it forgot to write half-decent characters who are capable of NOT fucking up. I swear, I was rolling my eyes the entire length of the movie.

Shaw would have made a great protegonist in the franchise. Starting off weak, naive and fighting herself into a badass like Ripley

Killing off Shaw the way they did here........ Was the same ways they killed off Hicks and Newt in Alien 3...... A huge slap to the face

I remember, that in Prometheus, she cried that she was unable to create life. Perhaps, in a weird way, this was David honoring her, using her to create life. He knew, by looking into her dreams and thoughts, that's what she yearned for the most. To give life, to create. He admired her. In Prometheus, he even admired her resilience, after she removed the Alien fetus withing her. I think, he personally felt he was, again, like I stated earlier, honoring her. It's her DNA that is used to make, what is in his eyes, the perfect creation.

David commits genocide in order to create his vision of perfection... he is the monster. The monsters he creates in his quest for perfection are just an extension of his horrific will. How ironic. A robot who hates flaws becomes a tyrannical killer perverting natural order of organic matter. He thinks himself above nature, but forgets that every carbon based material decays and dies...even robots eventually over time corrode. His pursuit of perfection is a reflection of self loathing. Humans at least know we are flawed and limited. Our ability to survive is based off human bonding (family/social structure) and use of tools.

Hated what they did to Shaw. Scott seems to have been alarmed by the fan response to Prometheus, but the online complainers aren't the whole fan population. I'd have preferred a Shaw-focused movie, and think Shaw's story would have been more interesting than another movie about dumb people doing dumb things and getting killed.

The pacing towards the end was terrible, they attempted an alien 1 in 7 minutes. "Well all of our friends just died, so let's go fuck in the shower" 😆

I really loved Shaw in Prometheus and always hoped to see what happened to her on day. But to see her story ending like this was really sad. Her character had so much potential!

I really hate that they killed off Elizabeth Shaw. Noomi Rapace is an incredible actress and stunning woman and for me she was truly someone who could've been a character as iconic as Sigourney Weaver once was. Her portrayal of Dr. Shaw in Prometheus was so graceful, strong yet vulnerable, multi- dimensional and disturbing. I was hooked to the screen even though the movie was far from perfect. But Covenant truly was a mess and by killing off Shaw they just cemented what a failure this movie was. But I love how you referred to Shaw as the very first Alien queen, something I didn't think about until now.

Noomi Rapace as Dr. Shaw was super badass and the best of Prometheus, she could've been the next Sigourney Weaver for the Alien franchise. What a waste of character development.

I really hated how they just killed her.

I saw this film and from a psych point of view as well as keeping with the pattern of Ridley Scott's film making, I don't believe Shaw s death is as straight forward as it might seem. Did he love her? Yes, we all agree to this and that's the key part. Did we see her take care of him and her go into the hyperbolic chamber in the prologue scenes? Yes. Strangely we see David tearing when he unloads the black death on the engineers. What I believe happened, and I think this will come out more heavily in the next movie is, David didn't actually kill Shaw at all. I think she died in the sleep chamber she was in and David discovered this when he went to wake her up as they arrived to engineers planet. Then in his grief and rage, he killed all of them, which explains his tears as he drops the weapon. This then leads to David's ultimate fall into insanity and hatred of humanity. The loss of his one and only love drives him completely mad, which is a very real motivation for his character that he was missing in the film. Did he mutilate and experiment on her body, yes. He admitted as much but he's by then he was so far gone in loneliness, grief, and madness, her body was irrelevant. He believes that the real Elizabeth or idea of her he loved is buried in the garden in his psychotic mind. This explanation explains it all quite well to me and makes up for alot that we don't see in the film. just my theory, thoughts?

Killing Shaw was a big mistake, Alien 3 did the same with two favorite characters and it ended up being sad and depressing from the beginning. Prometheus was a very interesting and intriguing movie which made many movie goers go and search for the meaning of its messages and theories however Alien movies don't have that aspect and I think Scott was afraid that fans would not like the sequel so he made a hypird movie that fails at both fronts. I wish he hadn't done that. RIP Elizabeth Shaw.

Shaw deserved better. For her character's journey to end so abruptly at the hands of David after everything she survived is infuriating. To add insult to injury, they don't even show how she dies or what happened leading up to her death.

Am I the only one who wanted to see more of the engineers, I think I've seen enough of the aliens and predators

I enjoyed bits of this movie, but I waited 5 years to find out where Shaw and David went only to be let tremendously. It bothered me so much.

If David truly held affections for Shaw, then in his own twisted rationale, he figured that Shaw could "live on" through his creations. In his own demented mind, David might have viewed his experiments on Shaw as some sort of tribute / gift to her, to have her genetic material live on even in death.

I think the mutagen was still changing Shaw's body and would have eventually killed her. David was making good use of her in the hope that her demise would count for something. The audience knows that David has been on paradise for ten years. His expedition has been lost for the same amount of time. My point is that Shaw and David weren't traveling long enough to justify using the hyper sleep chamber. My thoughts are she was placed in it because she was sick from the mutagen that was still in her system. I also believe David wanted to create something with Shaw not from her. To David the Aliens are their children. Pretty crazy!

I think they wasted Shaw as character. I would rather see the continuation of story with her then this. She is really strong character and it would be very easy to add her to covenant. I even thought she is going to appear from cryo-sleep or something different. Her ending is so disappointing in my opinion.

She should've been the leading character in this movie. Or at least the co-lead. When you have such a strong, iconic character in your franchise as Ripley and an actress whos screen presence is fucking amazing (Weaver), but then you have to come up with a new one, then you really should pay more attention. Shaw was a good character and Rapace was great in Prometheus. But these new characters in Covenant, I couldn't care for pretty much any of them. That was my issue with the movie. Boring characters.

killing characters between movies was lame in Aliens 3 and was lame in Covenant. and they did it AGAIN at the end of covenant when he kills the rest of the crew off in their sleep. ugh.

I would be ok with the Shaw/David story having a slow reveal over the next 2 films. I feel like a tragic love story will add weight to David's actions and madness.

I think David cried while releasing the 'black doom' to make the civilisation dead not out of pity or sadness, but he was deeply moved ina poetric way. He delighted the Shelly's 'Ozimanthes' in relation to magnificient, total and complete destruction. "Look at my work, yer mighty, and despair" - "I know and you know I am more mighty than you, and you are helpless". He brought doom to them and it was moving. So vast and quick, and unevitable. Should he be compasionate, he wouldn't wipe them out. Should he loved Dr Shaw, he wouldn't 'sacrifice' her. That's the very difference: Walter sacrificed a hand for Daniels, David sacrificed Shawn (Daniels: "What did you do to her?" David:"Exactly what I'm going to do to YOU.") and used her as, well, a tool. Whole movie is one big great metaphore of today times. Watch and learn. And be wary, and know such liers and malice-seekers are, and procedures and protocoles aren't goin' to save you from them.

My thought leaving the theater is that David fell in love with Shaw and wanted to create new life with her, but she rejected him and he killed her to create something of a hybrid of the two of them. The xenomorph is essentially David and Shaw's child. The only way he could have offspring with her.

I like to think Shaw was dying/changing and David loved her so much that he released her from having to go through whatever or she died in a crash or just died from whatever. He loved her so much that his desire is to create life with the woman he loved and that is what he is fixated upon and damn everything else. So she was a queen and he is a god. So Alien is more so a love story then horror story. It's a romance in spaaaaaaace!

I definitely dig the conceit that Shaw was the first Queen and that her reproductive system gave rise to the new species via the Xenomorph eggs.

I'd have liked to have seen David's developing friendship with Shaw. There was a lot of potential for the second film by having them bond while dealing with monsters coming out of storage or stowaways that sneaked on board. Instead they write her off and go for a generic action flick.

David is a synthetic incapable of procreating with the one he loves, the ultimate form of creation. He is jealous of humanity.

This was a very stupid decision to kill Shaw, total waste of character development and a waste of the Engineers.. AVP explained the Xenomorphs better they should have left them an Ancient Creature that both the Engineers and David stumbled upon

Shaw is in fact the first Alien Queen, the eggs having come from her genetically altered body.

Queen Elizabeth, bit of a pun by Ridley Scott. It wasn't David's initial intention to experiment on her I guess, but she probably found out what he did and tried to hijack the Juggernaut to get back to earth. He stopped her from doing so by forcing the Juggernaut to crash. David owed her for fixing him, so he tried fixing her, including some modifications. She was probably in coma or a state of suspended animation. David admires her kind nature, humility and resolve in the face of extreme danger and distress. Regardless, he created these monsters over which he claims dominion, making the same mistake as humanity and the engineers. He wants to understand them, but has no grasp on their ferocity.

Just watched the movie and was confused about two things: 1) Where are people getting this idea that the Engineers are somehow responsible for Shaw's death? She was last seen going into sleep in the chamber. So this whole revenge motivation for David to kill off the Engineer race doesn't make too much sense. 2) Why does David see the aliens/xenomorphs as the perfect race? It doesn't seem like they are anything more than an invasive, apex predator species. From Prometheus, we see that David has an appreciation for the arts, but how could he view a species whose primary ability is to kill as an improvement to mankind, where they are able to create life, think and innovate? This movie honestly just raised more questions to me than answer anything.

Maybe David loved shaw who saved him made a plan to allow her to have children although she is barren as we learnt in Prometheus. And may be that's how he ended up using her eggs to give birth to her "children" i.e. the alien xenomorphs. He managed this way to fill the whole in his loved one's life and also create the monsters that would hunt the human race which he despised so much.

I called it she couldn't have kids now she has plenty and David gets to be their father a big scary family.

Was disappointing she died off screen, no real explanation in the movie on why David killed the engineers or how the ship crashed.

How do you explain the Xenomorph hieroglyphs in the giant head chamber of Prometheus? They prove the Engineers had already created the Xenomorph so David couldn't have been the original creator of it.

This whole thing with Shaw and David and David becoming human-like were the most intersting things of the film. They should have explained more what happened between Shaw and David, and how their relationship brokedown, or what circumstances specifically lead him to experiment on her and destroy the Engineers. He can't just on a flip of a switch do what he did, there has to be something there to make him go full out to the dark side. We don't need another movie for this. It's like Ridley himself doesn't know and is just filling in the blanks as he goes along

To me the entire prequels to Alien have drastically been cheapened because it all ties to humans. The Alien itself, was a man made creation of a man made creation. The Space Jockey is now just a suit of a humaniod. The universe itself, with it countless wonders, it all ties to humans. Alien isn't hardly "alien" anymore. Well, one thing I will say, when they did show Shaw's corpses, that was the most sickening, morbid, and grotesque thing I had ever saw. I would rather have a chest buster plow through me than go through the horrors of what ever happened to Shaw.

If David intended the Alien's to be the perfect organism and superior to Humans, how come they keep getting there asses kicked by Ripley? A lowly human. This is meant as a joke by the way.

my mate was in set in Sydney and said they filmed FAR more scenes with Shaw and David's area he uses for his experiments.

Her corpse didn't look completely human... perhaps she had been corrupted by the alien DNA when the Trilobite was removed from her and it took a while for the effects to present themselves... this could be what caused her to start producing the alien eggs. David's sketch could have been his imagining of what she would become as she began to change.

Excellent analysis. However Shaw character was the catalyst for the main story line that Ridley Scott did not continue, which was why did the Engineers want to kill the human race after they created us. Now we will never know and why Covenant was a huge disappointment.

decades ago, when I saw the alien eggs, they reminded me of testicles.the shape, the fleshy composition, and of course, within the testicle, a tailed invader that creates a life that grows within a living host. I theorized, or more FEARED, that some scientist will mess around with human reproduction, splicing in ants and arachnids, and result in this species. David killing Shaw can only be explained in two ways: 1. He is a psychotic child, in puberty, angry at his father/creator, seeking vengeance upon mankind as he saw Peter Wayland as the representative of the species, thus he kills Shaw and uses her as both a host and harvesting her reproductive organs in order to create the eggs/face huggers. 2. In understanding the reason why the engineers want to eradicate the human race - the human race becoming able to create new life themselves. (synthetics) The Engineers did not want to share the power of their knowledge, knowing that once humans master space travel, they will come seeking knowledge or even declare war with the engineers in order to steal their technology. David Realized that after humans were targeted, the synthetics they in turn created would be hunted down and destroyed. with only one available tool of warfare, the black goo, and experimenting with breeds and subspecies of it, David Eradicated the engineer presence and animals (presuming there were any). He started developing a weapon to ensure he will remain the only one safe from it. those synthetics are creators and superior to biological life forms. the xenomorph was merely a tool, an animal he sought to tame and use for his purposes. I hate David, I hope he will meet a torturous slow demise, or even better, an eternity of torment for his crimes. (Buried alive comes to mind, with his creations slowly dying around him when they have no more source of food and water). I can only imagine the dirty looks and angry stares Michael Fassbender get on the street.

I enjoyed alien covenant but would have much preferred a Prometheus 2 with Shaw. I felt that Prometheus was one of the most insightful films I have ever seen, especially about where humanity came from, and could have lived without so much of the horror movie element of covenant, and more of the engineer's story. I didn't really even see a point to having the alien in Prometheus at all but it was what it was. definitely hope for more science fiction instead of horror for the next alien installment.

The scenes in Alien Covenant when the crew received the broken transmition from Shaw singing, and again when her hologram is accidentally triggered on the crashed Alien ship , both saddened me and creeped me out. The plaintive singing suggested terrible loneliness. It was almost ghostly. Her fear of being alone prompted her to re-assemble David. But afterwards it probably slowly dawned on her what her future held for her. Wish we could have seen more of her. Bring back Noomi !!

When David save Shaw during the storm in prometheus she thanked him like a normal person When Shaw was closing the bag on Davids head at the end she apologized for having to do it treating him like an equal This is why David care for her and no one else

This movie REALLY deflated the franchise. The main point and question asked at the end of Prometheus is completely forgotten and the crew on the covenant was somehow STUPIDER than the Prometheus crew. Not looking forward to the next ones. Ridley Scott got lucky with Alien.

I wrote a story based on Dr Gediman from Alien Resurrection. I’ve added other planets & star bases & different types of doctors & laboratory technologists…. Being a lab technologist myself I found it mentally stimulating to write.

As a movie, Covenant was pretty good. As another chapter in the Alien universe, it sucked xeno ovipositors. Covenant has several plot holes, and felt more like an attempt to stitch together badly-received canon from previous excursions than an attempt to wrestle O'Bannon's universe back on track. Shaw's "death" ended up feeling more like a rehash of "Let's kill Hicks and Newt, because ... plot!" than having any true purpose - from protagonist in Prometheus to a red shirt who didn't even rate an on-screen demise in Covenant, at the hands of Skynet-lite-to-Engineers David. There are no explanations, only questions - one of the biggest ones is "What the frak did I just watch?". We know nothing new about the Engineers - or even if that one city is all that remains of a star-faring species that went around seeing other planets with huge ships, and if so why? We know nothing about the creation of the goo, or why earth was supposedly the target. The timeline with the first movie is totally borked with the eggs. The ship crashed a ways from the city with Shaw's dogtags hanging inside, why? David had a starship and the goo and if he was intent on becoming a destroyer (or creator) then why not keep the ship and go somewhere else to continue with living subjects, instead of sitting on one planet no-one knew about hoping some hapless colony ship from earth would happen to hear Shaw's off-key singing and decide to drop by so he could complete his masterpiece creation of the xenos? Heck, are any of us even positive that it *is* David on board Covenant at the end, and not Walter deciding to fake it? Covenant ends up a bad attempt to retcon Prometheus, and it'll only make it worse. It would have been better to have remained a story-arc set *in* the Alien universe. If Covenent's purpose was simply to be a primer for the next movie, when "all will become clear", it would have been nice to know beforehand instead of coming away feeling slightly cheated. But that's just my opinion. Not wanting this to be entirely negative however, they get a brownie point for Shaw laid out reminiscent of Giger's Li I

There are so many layers to the story. Absolutely love it. Been watching A1, A2, Prometheus and Covenant numerous of times the last couple of months. Out of all of these I think Covenant is the most interesting one, trying to figure out what really happened. A question though, that has not been answered, is exactly WHY the Xenomorph itself is the perfect organism. So many questions. Drives me mad. Can´t wait for a follow up, linking it up to A1. Really hope it will happen.

I feel like Elizabeth Shaw died the same way David fought Daniels if Walter didn't come in time to save her. when she stab David in the throat, David commented with excitement, " that's the spirit!" when David forced a kiss on to Daniels he also commented about it. The way David commented and force himself on to Daniels was what I imagined him reliving the moment he killed Shaw in a sick compassionate way.

Hey. I don't think this was really the start of the xenomorph race. But this does suggest how they were made by the engineers. They had a xenomorph creature in a mural on the engineer ship. David being the brilliant and adaptive android his is, would definitely be able to make his own form of their experimentation. What do you think.

David killed both Holloway and Shaw - not nice. BTW: He created the Alien from the black goo which I think was weaponized DNA from an ancient creature. He didn't 'invent' the xenomorph, he brought it to it's logical conclusion..

One of Shaw's biggest motivation for continuing to seek out the Engineers is "belief".The problem is that Shaw's belief became perversed as she got older. Her "belief" became tainted with denial of reality & the facts. The fact is neither Shaw nor Charley ever confirmed if the Engineers created humans, they assumed.The Engineer himself never answered Shaw's questions. Shaw is conflating her assumptions with facts. Her tainted belief in her false assumptions & denial of reality made her vulnerable to David's manipulation.

This whole thing has me convinced that I've entirely lost interest in these movies. I actually liked Prometheus because it had a heroic survivor's aspect similar to the first movie, with Elizabeth filling Ripley's role. Killing her entirely off-screen with no real explanation given removes any interest I'd have in the movie. I feel like it's a bait and switch setup. Back when I first saw Aliens 3 I was impressed by the production, the action and pacing were all perfect IMHO, even Ripley's suicide at the end had that heroic aspect of taking the queen down with her and denying the corporation that murdered them all their prize. But over the years my feelings changed about how the movie killed Hicks and Newt off off-screen, and even Ripley started the movie dead, she just didn't know it yet. Yes it's a horror story and people die, but killing them off-screen is just stupid. IMHO it cheapened the whole story for Aliens because I cannot watch it again without knowing that nobody really survives it. Some of them just get to go down fighting instead of in their sleep.

The horror just made the characters behave stupidly for the sake of the horror (splitting up, following the crazy android into the basement, etc). Also, who lights a cigarette on an unexplored world? It was a good movie, but it was forced to be what it was because of where it ultimately needs to go. Wish we could have gotten more Shaw and answers, but oh well. She was going to die anyway, no food or water, so she had to go at some point.

Is it me, or is everybody missing the point that she was at the controls, crying and singing "Country Roads" as the space craft crashed into mountain at the home of the engineers? Why would the space craft crash after killing all the engineers? It crashed because Shaw was alive and battled with David after he dropped Black Death...she was trying to get away from David after she realized he was crazy. A God scenario would be that David landed on ground to see damage, got out or was forced out and Shaw tried to fly the ship herself but crashed into the mountain side. David then got her and brought her back to use her body to make the ultimate alien. That's my story and sticking to it. JH

Also when Ridley Scot said in the interview he never said specifically David actually started the race. He just said they decided in this film and I quote " this timethe engineers dindnt make them David made them." He said "this time". That could just mean in this chapter. Also whe he said David made them he never said these were the first xenomorphs. He could have easily meant David made this particular breed. People need to pay more attention and not take such vague info so literally.

Ridley Scott need to stop making Alien movies after this one. It's becoming serialized, predictable and devolved into cheap horror gimmick. I waited 5 years hoping the plot-holes from Prometheus would be filled. Instead, we got the bullshit ending in covenant.

I took it as David used her as the Catalyst for the queen as a sort of sweet irony to the fact she couldn't create life? She seemed pretty upset about that, and David is pretty MENTAL.

I've seen Alien Covenant. Good movie. But I have a question, are those mushrooms originated from David's bombing with those urns or is the black goo originated because the engineers used a kind of extract from the mushrooms?

Giger's artwork is just terrifying in such a fantastic way. Pure biomechanical terror, I wish I could surround my home with it.
