One of those films which is best viewed in segments.

I mean one of the fun things about this movie is trying to imagine how life would be on Earth after all that gravitational distortion and tectonic upheaval.

Those orbital defenses should have been charged up the moment that mothership arrived.

At first I was like: “the ship can’t be THAT large” Then I saw 1:05

The most human part of this film. "I am here to help" "Shoot it. Shoot it now"

every subsequent close up on that pilot makes me more and more convinced that she's the one doing all this destruction.

If something that large scraped off the moon and landed on the earth, that would be it. Over, the end, the planets orbit would be destabilized and the moon would be half destroyed. The atmosphere would be totally ripped from the planet as well.

the aliens had such a huge ship and apocalypse bringing weaponry... but still lost the battle

The VFX and sci-fi elements are so cool though! An alien spaceship pulling Saturn's rings? How awesome is that? Couldn't they hire a better director to make a more charismatic movie?

Lets apply some logic. If cars start to float, that means that the center of gravity moved outside the earth surface. That in turn means that the ship either needs to be super dense (denser than the average density of earth) or substantially more massive than earth. -- conclusion: throwing logic on a Roland Emmerich movie was pretty stupid from the beginning.

I still hate deeply how big that alien ship is

It is so big, so vast and humongous, that all destruction makes actually no sense.

So the orbital weapon platforms didn't get a single shot? They probably wouldn't have been effective since they're too small compared to the ship.

I know people criticize it for being "a dumb summer blockbuster" but regardless of that I still enjoyed it. It's a fun film that doesn't take itself too seriously

This movie will be relatable maybe in 50 years. As of right now it just feels like future humans vs the aliens.

Big problem is they did the money shot too early. Should've had a cloaking device until it breached the atmosphere.

Read on at your peril.It's too bad they used the stupid old "single point of failure" trope (Kill the Queen and you get them all! Smart aliens and smart people have at least SOME redundancy!) -because this movie does a good job of showing the effects of truly superior technology and the effect megastructures have on the environment. Even Earth borrowing some of their tech to set up defenses isn't enough when the "Main Body" of aliens decides to take us on. They build ships large enough to have noteable gravity of their own, they skip merrily past the speed of light at glee, their military intelligence is shown to be fast and nearly omniscient... and then ( I could actually BUY the first movie a bit because we got some of their technology ahead of time by decades so would have been able to make some sense of the computational architecture and I could imagine they hadn't run into a 'hacking ' attack in thousands of years so forgot about the problem) just as in the first movie where a single hack takes out their shields and then each ship has a single point of failure, so in this movie are they undone by the literal destruction of ONE special alien. Bleh. I loved the visuals and huge scale of this movie, thought at least some of the characters were amusing or hawt, and then...didn't love the ending. I wish they had been more clever.

This scene pissed me off, Got it. We are still outmatched and out gunned. And the damn thing moves like a snail. And you couldn’t get one coordinated orbital shot off? Just one? It wouldn’t have altered the plot or made the audience any less understanding it’s situation fucked anyway.

I think Humanity should've spent more time reverse engineering the alien energy shielding instead.

In my opinion, the aliens' second arrival is cool, but the problem is unlike the first film, this one is more impractical. Somehow the mothership that size didn't obliterate the moon, and when it entered the Earth's atmosphere, its gravity-beam that levitate any debris on contact didn't damage the Earth's crust, slowing down its rotation, and when landing, this massive vessel didn't collapse under pressure. Why not have this spacecraft built as a giant orbital space station than a colonist ship?
