All About Reading Progress Report
I have raved for years about the wonderful All About Reading approach to helping your kids learn to read! ‪@All_About_Learning_Press‬ makes it so easy to help your children learn to read. I personally love the cutouts! I like that All About Reading is such an enjoyable way to teach and learn phonics. I really appreciate the sticker trackers they always include and my girls love being able to mark another lesson. Maybe my favorite part of the program is that they simply ask you to work on a lesson for 20 minutes a day. You are not expected to complete a lesson. Coupled with 20 minutes of reading aloud to your kids and you have the full foundation for a lifetime of learning. I love that ‪@timberdoodleco‬ includes the All About Learning Press products in their curriculum kits. I have links down below if you would like to check them out.

Do you share my sentiment about learning to read? Is that a big bar for your homeschool? I know that it is one of the biggest struggles in learning and teaching.

Goodness! That's hard! Way to go, Marilyn! Thanks for sharing this. My kid is going to start level 3 in a few weeks and that definitely gave me some ideas on how to approach it. She's also a young 6 and I wasn't sure how to handle it. So thank you!

We started with AAS level 1 this year with our 1st grader. She's pretty good at reading so we went with the spelling curriculum. We wanted her to learn the rules! We plan on starting AAR level 4 next year. This is the best curriculum!

I love the creative ways they keep the kids engaged. That's honestly the most likely reason that we have found success with it. It keeps us all entertained and engaged. It is also so adaptable if you need more or could do less.

She's doing great! Love AAR. Thank you for bringing my attention to AAL! My just turned 5½ yo is about to finish level 1. Going to wait to start level 2 until 1st grade. Only because of the stories getting longer and his attention span still being pretty short. We'll just do a lot of practice in the meantime.

I have 6.5 yr old too. We used AAR last year, but when I pulled out level 2 at the beginning of the year, she said, "oh no not this again." 😑. So we tried another program, and we came back to AAR pretty quickly. I just think AAR is so thorough and does so much more than phonegrams. It was teaching them the syllable division that I felt was so strong in AAR (that wasn't well explained in our other program). I will say I have been anxious because a friend had told me all her 4 kids were done with AAR by 2nd grade. I got into my head we would be behind (ridiculous, I know). We are going to finish level 2 a little early, so i was gonna push on to level 3 this year. Seeing the stories though, I feel more confident just relaxing and starting 3 next year. Just seeing all those words would overwhelm my girl right now. I think we will just work on reading other readers once we are done. It's also so helpful to have an example of how to break up those long stories if we need to next year.

There is no need to rush it. I know you know this, but there is no real "behind" in homeschool. Your girl is right where she needs to be. The stories get so long so quickly. It's great they can read them, but even I am ready for the story to be over. 🤷‍♀️

Thank you so much for this video! I learned so many things watching how you teach the lessons. When you said you read the story on Sunday night, did you mean you read the story like a read aloud or that you both read it together like in the video? Thank you so much for what you do! You have been an amazing source of information and encouragement for me as I tackle our first year of homeschool.

We read it like a read aloud at least once before expecting her to tap in.

If my child places ahead in the placement test, and that means we skip a level, would you worry that they’ll miss something by not going through each level step by step?

No. I wouldn't. I started my oldest with level 3. In fact it's the only level she used.

My 6.5 year old has being doing the Teach your child to read in 100 easy lesson and he loathes that book! He's doing well and can read a little bit but get tripped up with blending sometimes.. do you think he could skip level 1 or would it be best to just do it? I do have a 4.5 year old that seems like he'll be interested soon so we could all do it together but my 6.5 year old gets bothered doing things he already knows over again 🤣. Thanks for all replies!

@@MakingEverydayMagic I did do the placement test but he fought me on it so we didn't get far. I think I know what we should do I just need someone's outside opinion with experience. It's so hard to go a route and think you'll fail your kids. Thank you!

When I'm unsure and my kids are between levels, I prefer to go low and let them go at their pace. I really think it builds confidence when it's a bit easier for them.
