Alligators Nest, Tully is a coming together of two gorgeous freshwater creeks flowing down from the tropical mountains in Far North Queensland and is situated in Tully Gorge National Park, Tully.
The name ‘Alligators Nest’ has nothing to do with the reptile and everything to do with the local Scout Group - which it was named after. In fact it’s one of the waterholes in Far North Queensland that actually doesn’t have any crocodiles lurking in it! but as you will see in this video, there are plenty of fish.
The species found while filming in this spot:
Khaki or Tully Grunter (Hephaestus tulliensis), Sooty Grunter (Hephaestus fuliginosus), Wet Tropics Tandan (Tandanus tropicanus), Jungle Perch (Kuhlia rupestris), Southern Purple Spotted Gudgeon (Mogurnda adspersa), Pacific Blue Eye (Pseudomugil signifer), Eastern Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia splendida splendida).
No real aquatic plants where seen in this area that consists of mainly crushed granite rock.
Water conditions:
Temp. 22°c,
PH. 7.51
Cond. 59.9microS
TDS 42.7ppm
Salt 34.4ppm

Wow!...that was really wonderful Jason. The underwater scenes were fantastic as usual, but I also really enjoyed the immersive drive into the gorge.

Thanks Greg! this was a beautiful spot, I was helping a friend with a nature reserve only about 5 minutes drive away and this was a nice spot to spend the afternoon cooling off, a great spot to visit if ever you get up this way, the gorge is great to herp at night as well, I'll have to remember to do some more drives into these types of places, it was a bit of an after thought at the time but it gives an idea of the bushland around the place 😊

Sì, la maggior parte dei luoghi del Queensland settentrionale è molto limpida a causa di tutte le piogge tropicali.

Love it. I'm thinking that cattie might have been a Neosilurus Ater, not a Tandanus? Have kept them and the inky velvetyness and shape seem the same..

I double Checked it was definitely a Tandanus unfortunately, I to was hoping for a new species for me to catch on film anyway, Thank you.

That catfish is beautiful! The habitat looks like its cooler water. Did you manage to record the temperature and pH?

I was born in Tully and i don't recall the water temp there to be 22°... that water was like ice... it was always so cold you could only spend a minute or two in it.

This is more of a reference for people keeping fish from the area in an aquarium, ideal conditions for them so to speak as I get a lot of people asking me how to keep them, the gorge it self is national park but we did collect fish in the area that wasn't and a lot of the smaller creeks between Tully and Mission Beach were warmer then the gorge it self, this is a channel that focuses on showing their natural habitats so they can be recreated into the aquarium not for scientific purposes, in saying that we swam there every day that we were in the area and found it quite refreshing, it didn't seem icy to us 🙂
