If you're planning on buying a plastic Whiskey Barrel from your hardware and it already has a drain hole, here's a fun way to overcome it, just turn it into a water feature.
In this video I will take you step by step on how to plumb a real working brass tap into your pond to make a great feature and circulate the water for your fish at the same time, a good weekend project for your native or exotic fish as a feature on your patio or yard that will have some people wondering what's going on, you can do this with a tap or you can even use bamboo to give it an oriental theme, but it will overcome those pesky holes they put into some of those plastic tubs that would otherwise make these tubs useless for a water feature, I hope you enjoy this in-depth video, Please Like and Subscribe for more like this in the future.

Now that is a fantastic weekend project, Jason! Thanks! And thanks for the parts list as well. I've got a screen shot of it. A bit of conversion from metric to inches and we're off! Cheers! ~Ron

Nice project and great end result. Only things I would have done different is to add some rocks as little caves for fish to hide in case of predators and perhaps a nice wide flat rock to cover the ugly pump.

I did think about that but the hornwort grows fast and the Nardoo covers most of the water as well, so plenty of place for the fish to be under cover, this was just the end result after the build, it only takes a couple of weeks for it to grow in, it's all personal preference really, the rainbows wouldn't use it anyway as they are constantly swimming and camouflage well to, I wouldn't put something like goldfish in or the birds would get them on the first day, I actually had a pair of Kookaburra nesting in a box I put up and they have never bothered these fish but they did try and go for a pond with Swordtails as they stood out much more so I had to cover them.

So many things going on here! First, it is a nice project - and it is well done! Second, once again your update perfectly fits my morning coffee. Third, the background music - ever heard ZZ-tops "Gotsta get paid"? :D The only question I have is, why use a copper pipe? If pH goes down, you might get problems, right? Anyways, once more big cred to you and cheerful greetings from Austria!

Once you get a constant flow it will coat it self and shouldn't release anything, I have had one before for years and never had a problem with it, the reason I use the copper is because it looks more realistic and once it weathers has a nice rustic look to it, you can really use what ever you want it's personal preference, I have also used bamboo in the past and run plastic pipe through it to give it an oriental look.

Ahhh the sound of whiskey pouring from a height. You know for a guy that doesn’t drink, you sure have an interest in playing with grog barrels!

Hahaha just because I don't drink doesn't mean I can't dream, It was just so frustrating seeing all these barrels for sale with holes in them and it gave me the idea when my friend was a bit frustrated seeing all the bigger tubs with the holes, I did a concrete one years ago and my neighbour complained I was wasting water, she never stopped to think why it wasn't overflowing 🤣

Any advice on figuring out what I'm allowed to trap in fresh water in West Aus? All the info I can find seems tailored to marine and fishing larger eating fish. I, of course, am wanting to set up some native biotopes

WA has some weird laws, you would have to ask around over there, maybe try ringing fisheries I'm not sure.

Good stuff m8, whats a good flow rate for the pump?
@australianbiotopes4563
@australianbiotopes4563 3 ай бұрын
I used a pump I already had but if your buying one just check on the flow rate to hight ratio, it doesn't have to be to powerful and it can be regulated by the tap as well but you don't want it to small ether or it might not pump high enough, make sure you get one with a threaded outlet as well, the don't all have one.
