The whole "alpha" thing is based on an old wolf experiment where a guy locked up several wolves from different packs to see how they react and then assign them roles based on how agressive they are. In the wild there are 2 leader wolves (aka alphas), male and female wolf, they're the breeding pair, then there's their youngest pups and the lowest position in the pack have their eldest pups (aka betas, they help their parents raise the youngest pups). There is no "male wolf agressive and dominant, female wolf submissive", there are lots of examples where the male wolf is calm and submissive and the female is the dominant and agressive one. Also another thing, wolves don't really like agressive wolves, can't behave? you get kicked out. So the whole "being an alpha is natural" is bullshit.

People tend to love comparing humans to other animals, without considering the drastically different life conditions and social skills required in human society, compared to a wolf pack. A case could be made for applying alpha/beta/omega to human social groups - but it would be much more loosely, you could have different status in different social circles, and obviously, a human alpha would have a much different behaviour than a wolf alpha. In more natural/dangerous surroundings, a more agressive 'alpha' may be preferred, as agression is often used to intimidate, and avoid actual violence to develop. To be constantly agressive for no reason is a sign of insecurity and mental instability, which could create more conflict, and in nature put the group in danger. In humans, the alpha would often be the one with the highest social skills, level of attractiveness, and most 'followers' of both genders. He is more of a leader, not so much a dictator. The betas can be high, middle and low. The high betas are often the ones closest to the alpha, both in relationship, and similar 'alpha traits', just at a slightly lower level. The middle betas are the 'average' in the same traits, and have a less close relationship to the 'alpha' than the higher betas. And the low betas are a bit below average in the traits/relationships. The omega (usually one or two people), are the lowest rank. They are sometimes 'put down' a little, but not always. And keep in mind, an omega in one group, can be well above the alpha in another group; because everything is relative to the other people in the group, not a fixed level. Of course, most people will often have a tendency to be a certain 'level' in most areas of life, but it is much more fluid than people think. You are not nessicarily a looser because you are an omega, and you don't have to stay the omega. But the people who claim to be 'alphas' never are, lol. :)

Same girl, mine ended up raping me. When he first talked about the alpha mentality I was like “ok, sure. A little Weird, but whatever.” And i WISH i had known what he was referring to right away, because if I had known what a selfsentered, condescending and narcissistic mindset this is I would have seriously examined his demeaning words and actions (towards both me and others) a lot sooner. The alpha mentality is so self serving: they straight up are justifying their tendency to look down on other people inherent value as human beings, because they truly believe they, as the alphas, ARE superior to them. I am so saddened to hear how much this has hurt you. I wish you everything good in the world, and that you will heal and one day be able to freely love. I know that I have become very sceptical and somewhat cynical towards men (and people in general) after my own experiences, so my heart is with you on your healing journey.

In my opinion Alpha males are deep down teenagers who couldn't show their feelings, femine side or hobbies because old generations told us that this is no how men behave. I do love how much more open gen z is about soo many things. And I really do hope this generation of men can realize how much more freedom they actually have than this. These twerps talk like pretending to be an alpha male gives you freedom, but how can squeezing yourself into an even more restrictive set of behaviors than regular masculinity be freedom? Freedom is accepting the fact that you can behave and do what brings you joy and comfort, whatever that is, as long as it doesn't harm anyone. Accepting how you actually want to live and doing it is the real "chad move" as they say. It's funny cuz the whole "alpha" concept was created by watching caged wolves. I’ve noticed that insecure people often think confidence is knowing you’re the best person in the room, and they’ll often resort to putting others down to convince themselves of this. But true confidence is knowing you may not be the “best” person in the room, and being okay with that. I see someone as confident when they are enthusiastic about building others up, and showcasing the talents/gifts of others without feeling threatened.

Amen to that! I completely agree. Confidence is definitely a person that knows they aren't the best but, they always have ways to help, willing to offer a hand, boost someone else up because, they are already ok with who they are faults and all. A confident person doesn't need to show off confidence, it is simply them accepting themselves and knowing what they can bring to the table.

That's the crazy thing to me about these self proclaimed "alpha males", the definition of an alpha is to care and protect but these me do the entire opposite of that. In fact, they want to be catered to, when often what theyre referencing is meant to be doing the exact opposite; catering to the people they're meant to protect. And alpha male wolves adore their female mates, they'll spoil and do everything they can for them and their pack. It's just skewed thinking because these men are so insecure, completely forgetting that we are HUMAN beings, highly social animals that survived because we looked after and cared for each other.

When social change is afoot, traditionalists fight back to keep the lives they always knew. Very common, and not wrong to try to view the pros and cons of both the traditional and the revolutionary views. Both have reasons to exist, but one will be the obvious victor, and society should incorporate only the best of the other ideology while sloughing off the bad. Change is always stressful, and large change can be scary, so in-depth and respectful discussion is needed to help grease the wheels.

I felt like these people outside our relationship had no right to judge him for what was working for us. He's pretty secure now, but I wish he had felt empowered to love himself more as a young man, that he was worth more than what he could provide. Every time I see these "alpha male" videos, all I hear is layers of mommy issues. Just like daddy issues, mommy issues have no place in a relationship. Women are requiring emotional equality and maturity. We can support ourselves and I wonder if that's intimidating to these guys. If being a decent human being and treating us right is too upsetting or too difficult, then don't waste our time. Simple as that.

There are many men who feel threatened by a self sufficient woman, which stems from insecurity. But on the other hand there are plenty of men who appreciate an independent woman who doesn't *need* a man, but *wants* one to share her life with. Essentially, if a man wants a woman to constantly bow down to his wants and needs and doesn't want to see her side of things at all then it's a bad sign. Both parties should be willing to hear out the other and compromise.

Oh, it definitely is. Women no longer need men to survive like we had to in the past, we have the choice to remain single and alone and make "picky" (what they call picky we call reasonable lmao) choices when it comes to a partner. Men didn't have to add anything to the relationship previously apart from finances, they didn't have to satisfy or care or respect or look after their wives. But that's no longer the case, and so much of their masculinity is so embedded that to be "masculine" is to have a completely submissive wife that will put up with anything they dish out. Now things have changed. Women want an emotionally intelligent, caring husband that takes a bigger role in the raising of the children and maintaining the household (both were previously seen as female only roles, men in the past weren't considered important to raising children hence why the courts favour women as a parent much more. Men built it this way). And men have been taught to repress their emotions (apart from anger) and not really care for anyone but themselves, as that's seen as weakness. So now we end up with men like this. That's my theory anyway.

It can feel weird when you notice all those people say are examples or heroes in this world turn out to just be,,,disappointed or dangerous people. With this in mind, it is natural to try to scrape, scatter and try to find some sort of new understanding about masculinity but to just miss the mark this badly...

Besides there are more issues in this world that need to be addressed and develop more than this social construct ideal image of being a man.

I've something to add to this "imposing date" stuff. I understand your point of view, but here's the thing : they want to make us feel obligated to do so. I once was in a restaurant and there was a groupe of guys at a table. They were taking space, talking really loudly, so I had already heard questionnable stuffs... One of them suddenly said that his Tinder date was trying to postpone the date (i suppose either because she didn't want it this night, or she wasn't feeling good, or she didn't want it at all), and his friends were like "You're not being confident enough, don't ask questions, just tell her you're gonna come take her at a time" and I was beyond disgust... It's a thing to take someone to a date at a place we both love, it's something else to simply not let them any choice.

@@X.O_remi I guess it's a very personal thing, so this is just my view on it. @@X.O_remi hi there! here’s my opinion, too. females is a biological term while women is a gender term. and the actual definition of female is literally about how they have ovaries and can make babies. so, saying female kind of makes women feel like their only purpose is s_x and babies, which it’s not! for example, im biologically female and have nO interest in wanting babies, so am i no longer “female”? also, it’s to include trans women. since trans people (mtf) are not biologically “female”, it’s kind of degrading to them. like they feel like their identity is not important or irrelevant. so, “women” is just better :P

I like the conclusion. I do believe many of these men fall into these communities because they genuinely want to improve. Nothing bad with wanting to take initiative, gain confidence, stop making yourself smaller... as long as you don't step on others to do so. That's were the line is drawn between being a natural leader (which I think is what they want to achieve) and an opressor. You won't be beloved if you don't take others in consideration. Leadership doesn't come from ordering people around while treating them like lesser beings, but gaining people's trust and making them want to be with you and do stuff together, create synergy. It's not them carrying you, it's you carrying them, it's exhausting and many people aren't fit for it, and you know what it's okay!

Plus, the "i'm not telling you where we're going, just be ready" is a weird control thing that makes me a lil uncomfortable... This is what i'm imagining will happen: I don't know where we're going so I get dressed up in my best second-hand vintage magician's outfit I found at the thrift store, and then we're either somewhere quite nice where it's considered bad form to be in a vintage magicians outfit, or we're at fuckin' wendy's and I could have just worn jeans.
