In 2016, Renault boss Carlos Ghosn unveiled the resurrected Alpine brand’s first concept car. The A110 resembled its sixties namesake, just like BMW’s MINI took inspiration from the original. But this wasn’t a nod to the classic, it was a complete revival.
With rear-wheel drive, a mid-engined layout and a kerbweight less than 1,000kg, the Alpine possessed the ingredients of a great sports car. More than a year later, the production version appeared, with a 249bhp 1.8-litre turbo engine and seven-speed auto gearbox. And now we’ve driven it.

Fabulous. I am so pleased there is a genuine alternative to the usual default choice. Also, that it takes it's own path; it doesn't try and emulate anything else. Well done Alpine and a great review Sutters! Lovely videography too.

This confirms it for me. I was undecided between this and the Cayman. After much thought I have decided that this is the one to get. Now it's just the small matter of a career change and saving up for one.

Most people here that are bashing the car are doing so simply because they care mostly about the badge. The car is a masterpiece, and although 50k might be a lot, the price will eventually go down.

It doesn't need traditional manual mode. Automatic mode is much more efficient, I think every car in the future will do without a gear lever.

Finally a consequently lightweight car again. I hate it when manufacturers say "yabba blabba we reduced weight by 3.5 kilos" right after two decades of making their cars fat and unwieldy. Light nippy cars are much more fun than anything lumbering around a 500 kilo V8 it is that simple and I really like that they simply went ahead and built it like that.

I love the way it sounds and the design (especially the interior) is fantastic. I'm interested to see how it compares to a 718 Cayman, hopefully there will be some kind side-by-side comparison videos in the future.

This is just the entry level Alpine. Wait until you see further developments... This little car will demolish opposition on any given countryside road. Perfectly balanced dynamics and low running costs. This is how sport cars should be.I am considering to buy one. Perhaps will wait for the A110 S. And will visit French Alps once more.

Great video & glad you like this car as much as I do. Car manufacturers need to take note, power & torque are NOT what it's all about. Best driving car I ever owned was a Ford Puma 1.7 and this Alpine looks like a natural successor.

i think that renault will return in the USA with the brand Alpine with this A110 and a new SUV soon in 2019 or 2020. The french group PSA returns in the USA since october 2017 with a car sharing service ( they don't sell car for the moment) and renault will follow . Renault sells this Alpine in Japan , so why not in the USA !

yeah not really a thing for the US market, you need tight n twisty roads to get the best out of the a110. although if you live in the US where they have tight n twisty roads, then yeah great choice.

Actually this might be the first modern Renault to be sold in the states in a couple of years time. There's quite a lot of speculation about Renault re-entering the US market with the Alpine brand.

Great review! Let's hope people buy this car in their masses to convince all other sports car manufacturers that we don't all want huge power and grip levels that are virtually impossible to exploit. Depth of response and exploring the limits are where the joy is! Time for a new Porsche 904?

Cayman 718 = 300hp for 1400kg = 0.21hp per kg Alpine A110 = 252hp for 1080kg = 0.23hp per kg if u want a better hp/kg ratio u need a cayman 718 GTS much more expensive and u won't get that amazing feeling to drive a light car, it's just an other world where u're able to feel like a pilot coz u can use the whole power with a big smile !

Sell very well? I don't think so. It's a niche car new to the market. Yes it may be highly reviewed but the average buyer buys a Porsche and the story ends there. And Porsche has aproven history of strong residuals, that is far from a given for an Alpine. Nothing is known about their reliability

Both are lightweight rear drive cars that prioritize fun over pure performance. Alpine takes it a step further with a MR layout and extra power.

The only thing I don't like about his car is the badge. I don't like that A on the side and on the steering wheel, it just looks a bit cheap and kinda like a superhero movie logo. They should have stuck with just the classic A L P I N E writing, it looks far more elegant.

Have to say guys amazing car and review as always but I have to say that video quality is fail. Overexposed, highlights are so bad and details in shadows are killing me. I know I am being to techie but for someone like Auto Express this is not acceptable.

lotus, catheram and others are made for trackdays. Have fun driving 8 hours in a lotus. Alpine is made for comfort and sportivity.

Is this final nail in Lotus coffin? Are they finally ready to make new Evora-sized car? I think Porsche will not see it a lot in sales, but I cannot believe that Lotus buyer would not be intrigued by Alpine. Especially if they make RS version. Yes Evora 400+ is faster but that Alpine shows how its outdated with old heavy 3.5lit engine and how lighter car should look/feel. From Lotus fan now I rather critique any where I can just to make them aware what they are doing to brand.

It' s an original chassis all aluminum and an engine Nissan designed but prepared by Alpine. Not really a renault...

I agree, but I can bet you that people will look at this and say 'oh it's an Alpine, it's a shiny Renault". The people I think about are the one to buy a German car for what they represent, not what they are.

It's a 4C competitor, not a Caymans. It's a small fringe company's sports car around 1100kgs with a 1.8T and a DCT only. Sounds a lot like an Alfa to me.

Just a pity they messed up the interior imho. Those slow digital dials are a no go as is the cheap looking plastic. Would've deserved some paint on the dash maybe. I don't think Porsche is worried at all, but still a really great car from the looks and concept.

Agreed, different buyer to a Porsche buyer. I suspect it will be hard for this car to sell, the kinds of peole willing to shell out that much money for a car want a big badge and Alpine isn't, or wasn't in the last few decades unless you are really an enthusiast (but those tend to be low on cash and not actual Porsche buyers, not the majority of)

I have a nismo 370z, they dont sell well at all in uk, but you get exclusivety......gas alone means most ppl cant afford to run it. 50k too much, 40k would be more realistic like the z,
