Officials are opening alternate channels to the Port of Baltimore Monday so ships can get past the wreckage of last week's bridge collapse. A captain for the U.S. Coast Guard says the two auxiliary channels will be used by response vessels, commercially essential ships and those participating in salvage efforts. CBS News' Nicole Sganga has more.

First of all, prayers and condolences to anyone affected, however if a bridge were to collapse this was probably the best case scenario. The fact that it was 1:30 am, so limited traffic in comparison to rush hour, also the fact that it was a active construction zone so police were on either ends of the bridge so they could respond quickly and close the bridge. Those 2 factors likely saved 50 lives

Baltimore Banner is reporting that the owner of the ship has filed a motion in federal court under the Limitation of Liability Act of 1851, which would limit its liability to the value of the vessel involved and the cargo it was carrying. Let the lawsuits begin.

There was a new law passed right after the crash of the Titanic... That limits liability to..... How much was the ship worth after the crash.... ? How much was the cargo worth.... ? Likely that the replacement bridge will have separate spans and approaches for traffic going in opposite directions...rather than the now destroyed Key Bridge having bi-directional traffic on the same span. Also, there will be added barriers/islands built around the main support piers that previously had minimal protection.

following the knockdown of the Sunshine Skyway bridge in 1980: From NTSB ABSTRACT Contributing to the loss of life and to the extensive damage was the lack of a structural pier protection system which could have absorbed some of the impact force or redirected the vessel. INVESTIGATION Bridge Protection Information There are several methods of structurally protecting bridge piers from ramming by vessels. They include fender systems, ranging from simple wooden fenders to elaborate reinforced concrete structures; reinforced piers; dolphins, ranging from groups of typical wooden piles to large stone or concrete-filled circular caissons; fender-net "ship catchers," consisting 'of buoys, anchor lines, and anchor piles; and artificial protective islands and cofferdams built around the piers. Several bridges with pier protection systems have survived collisions similar to the ramming of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge without major damage to piers or superstructure. Other bridges without pier protection systems have not survived such collisions. I ANALYSIS Structural Pier Protection The mass and design of bridge piers and pier protection systems and the configuration, weight, and speed of ships has a direct effect on the damage which may result from a collision. The bulwark and the forecastle of the SUMMIT VENTURE struck the pier column before the lower bow struck the pier crashwall. If the pier crashwall had been larger, or if a pier protection system had been installed at that location, the initial impact would have occurred near the waterline. Because the pier crashwall is anchored through the pier footer directly into the bay bottom and is larger and stronger than the columns, it is possible that sufficient energy might have been absorbed to reduce the vessel's forward motion and perhaps to redirect the vessel before the bulwark and forecastle struck the column. While the pier still could have been damaged, only the vessel's mast would have struck the bridge span if the vessel had been redirected to starboard, and the vessel could have passed under the bridge span if it had been redirected to port. Then, the damage to the bridge span might have been minimized. Because the Coast Guard and FHWA have no requirements or standards for structural pier protection, the bridge owner must determine what, if any, protection will be provided. However, the Government of France requires that all bridges over navigable waterways be protected against ship impact. The Safety Board believes that the Coast Guard and the FHWA should coordinate their efforts in providing for the safety of the general public by determining the specific existing and proposed bridges which are in need of additional protection from ship collisions and issue standards for the design, performance, and location of structural bridge pier protection systems.

Actually, it's the other way around. There is currently a temporary flight restriction (TFR 4/1992) that restricts everyone, recreational or commercial, from flying an unmanned aircraft within a certain radius of this scene without proper authorization. This is specifically for the safety of the crews on the scene, especially those in manned aircraft. This is typical of many emergency scenes that may have manned relief aircraft in the area. I am certain the drone footage we are seeing is from someone that has received the proper authority and coordinated with any other air operations within that area, and would be flying by commercial rules under an FAA part 107 certification.

Yup. A 1.5 mile Interstate bridge ain't cheap. Maritime Law limits the liability of the ship. Lots of jobs though and the bridge will be state of the art. Biden '24.

“One of the things that was hard for me to believe is that they didn’t require tugs on the vessel as it was traversing towards the bridge,” said David Heindel, president of the Seafarers International Union, which represents U.S. merchant mariners. The terror is obvious; 1.5 million people cross the borders illegally, foreign intelligence knows no tug boats, no control internally possible on container ships, wind known, and bridges are weak. Port management and transportation bosses must be fired, but Biden sees only federal money. Terror of cutting off the engine can not be excluded at a precise moment, but the government will never acknowledge it in an election year. Israel is right when it comes to terror, and Biden will lose Black, Hispanic, and Jewish votes by appeasing Russian, Chinese, and Muslim Jihadists. White America is all America today. ALL COLORS AND RACES ARE TRUE AMERICA. AMERICA AND THE ADMINISTRATION SHOULD STOP PLAYING RACE CARDS ONCE AND FOR ALL BECAUSE IT IS FASHISTIC AND NOT TRUE. WATCH LATEST 60 MIN...

Are you aware that a 5500 horse tug on either side isn't gonna do much to move a 100k ton ship at 6 knots unless they're specially rigged with hawsers connected to the ship? Even then, their use would be questionable. The ship needs "way" to be steerable, otherwise known as moving water over the rudder. Do you realize that a useful tactic would be for the tugs to reverse so their props would provide flow over said rudder? Do you know anything at all about conning a large ship?
@mikeL5183
@mikeL5183 2 ай бұрын
@@johnvictor2451almost right, I think. I'm guessing you watched Tim B at Sea, I think what he was saying is that the slowest those ships go under power and still remain controllable with the rudder is around 5-7 knots, if they set to dead slow it's too slow to steer. In the ports where slower than 5-7 is needed they use the tugs as a brake but set the speed to what would amount to 5-7 knots so the ship's prop sends enough water over the rudder for steering. A tug connected with a line astern isn't close enough to send water over the rudder to provide steering control, especially since that water would be flowing across the rudder in the wrong direction.

200,000 ships managed to safely transit under this bridge over the last 50 years without tugs. Tugs won't do much for a 100,000+ ton ship doing 8 knots.

Yeah guys. I watch several shipping channels and have also watched tugs positioned port and starboard with hawsers attached do combination nudges and pulls to guide and position big boys thru channels. It's an art for sure and needs careful coordination and planning. BTW, this new channel in no way handles ships of the draft and air draft of the big boys.
