I went for a run today in my Lone Peak 5. Up here, in Québec we have received 4 inches of fresh snow today. No complaints about breathability and drainage but I’m eager to try the 6.

Thanks for the comparison. I started a while ago with the LP 4.0, used the 4.5 and the LP RSM Mid models and I´m about to sort out the LP 5.0 (worn out) now. All my LPs were primarily used on 12/24hr long distance hikes. After getting myself used to the zero drop they performed pretty good for me. I didn´t gave a try to the 6.0 yet but just got a pair of the Olympus 5. It´s providing more support and I hope the sole lasts longer. In the past I was disappointed with the durability and quality of the LP (especially the LP RSM Mid) and the poor performance of Altra´s European customer service. Anyway, my new Olympus 5 now have to prove they are worth the money. Thx again.

Excellent review, Dave! 👌🏻 I wear LP5 regularly on my trail runs, as well as a pair of Merrell trail gloves for non-rocky trails. Before that, I had LP3 and two pairs of LP4.5, as well as some Inov8 pairs which I felt not comfortable and durable enough. I really love the freedom provided by LPs wide toe box, as well as the zero drop feeling along all the legs. I've just decided that my next purchase will be a pair of LP6, they look promising. Altra Montblanc did not convince me at all after watching some videos, perhaps in future versions... Today I prefer to stay on the LP series with this latest development you showed us. My weight is 72 kg and my runs go from 10 to 20 km up and downhill. But the LP even offer me great comfort on longer runs up to 50 km. Dave, please keep on reviewing trail shoes for us, good job!! 👍🏻 Regards from Barcelona 👋🏻

You'll love them. But one suggestion I'll make about the Lone Peak is that you should get some new insoles every 50-100 miles. They'll feel brand new again. The rock protection is a bit higher in that shoe by design but it'll start to feel dead after some miles. The midsole foam is good, just get new insoles.

Pro tip for the Lone Peak. Just get a couple extra pairs of insoles. The rock protection plate is fairly flexible but it's only about 7mm from the bottom of your foot. It's that high to help the midsole conform around the terrain. It does that well. But the insoles are inexpensive and pack out after about 50-100 miles. A quality midsole would make it cost $10 more. Just get new insoles before big races or long hikes.

Another LP hack. If you buy the boomerang insole from INOV8 and throw it under a thin worn out old insole. It’s like giving the LP’s a turbo charger.

I put these shoes through the grinder last week. I did some hiking in Bryce canyon, the Narrows and some backpacking in Zion, and a rim to rim to rim hike at the canyon. For that last hike my feet were sore at the end, but every inch of my body hurt like a motha by that point. I loved wearing them.

I love my LP6. I trail run in Arizona. Harsh, sharp rocks, different trails types. It's been amazing. Protects my toes well. You can feel some rocks under your foot but nothing painful.

Thanks for the detailed review, I bought some Olympus 5's recently but looks like I will wear them out before getting to my Camino pilgrimage in April ! so am considering getting a pair of Lone Peaks to either wear during preparation or for on the walk depending on fit, will try instore but sometimes this does not help so any feedback in regard to these two shoes would be appreciated. PS Olympus 5 laces are way too short and insole fairly flimsy for this price point, cheers

One of my all time favorites. The only downside for me is the Maxtrack grip. I’ve never REALLY slipped, but it’s been pretty sketchy a few times. They should have just gone with vibram, maxtrack just simply isn’t as good. Oh, and the 5.0 had better colorways. If I had a choice I’d easily take a few of those over any of the 6.0s

@@ChaseTheSummit If you reeeallly want a Vibram Megagrip outsole, have a cobbler retrofit one onto the shoe for you. Make sure it's a good lug and it's actually megagrip. Maxtrac has changed a bit over time.

I bought another pair of 6's now before they are starting to run out everywhere since it seems from looking at other reviews that the 7's is a little less popular. Honestly, I dont see why people are so up in arms about the new thing. Every time I find a shoe that works, I have the issue of not being able to buy it again when I cant repair it any more. This basically sets me at risk of having not such a pleasurable time outdoors because I always have to be a guinea pig for other peoples fashion sensibilities, color schemes and whatnot. I want something that works and have been proven to work for me! Would love to hear your report on the durability one year later though!

Just bought a pair of these to replace my hiking boots. After a 2 day trip on the AT I’d say they’re a great substitute. I’ll be interested to see how they hold up over time. The zero drop takes some getting used to but I’ve enjoyed them so far. I’ve got a narrow foot and these have traditionally been a wide foot shoe. I’m surprised at how well they fit my hard-to-fit foot.

Nice review, man! I think one key difference I feel is the ankle/heel area - less sloppy and floppy on the 6 - and it's welcome. I stayed with the same size as the LP5 and it's a better fit this time around. I find the EGO "feel" on the 6 less soft, but more responsive as you note. Minor upgrade overall....

@@justind2159 Yes, the 5 always felt soft and slipper-like and comfortable, but a little sloppy. I think the 6 is more dialed in with better wrap and a little more structure on the back heel.

@@ericperramond3463 hmm, can you expound on that? I can't find any decent reviews on it comparing to the LP. It sounds like the forefoot stack is 5mm less than the LP, and I certainly don't want less there. I got some mtn racer 2s that I'm trying but those seem so much more built up than the LP

Thank you for the video. Very useful. I wanted to buy LP6 for trails and previously I never tried zero drop. Consultant in a shop did not recommend them for long trails because of midsole. And recommended outroad and trimp 4 (which feels plush). And now I'm in doubt. Would you recommend LP6 for 30-50k trails for new to zero drop?

I stumbled on a description of the 5s , which said it's not for folks like me with a low arch. They call me a pronator. Wide toe box sounded nice.

For sure, these are more designed for neutral runners. If you pronate you'll want a stability shoe.

Great review, I have the LP5 and love them. The original foot shape really works, I also have the Olympus and like the extra cushion they provide. I will probably give the 6 a shot. How would you rate/compare the LP to the Topo MTRacer 2. I like the Topo brand but haven't pulled the trigger on the MTRacer 2. Thanks for you input and insight.

They're pretty darn similar. I'd say my foot is more comfortable in the Lone Peaks but the Topo's feel better built and have a much more secure grip in muddy/wet conditions. The Topo's aren't zero drop but darn close and feel pretty similar in terms of ride. I like both!

I find the Topos a little more midfoot secure, and you have to play with the lacing so that the ankle padding doesn't rub on your ankle bone, but their tread is FAR more secure than the LP5 or LP6. I love the Lone Peaks for my easy days, but their grip is questionable on anything but buffed out, gravel, or earthen trails. OK on talus, rocks, as long as they are dry. On ice? LP6 (like ht 5) is dangerous.

Thanks for the video! Would you recommend these for someone who (nowadays) does a mix of road and off road? I also checked out the new Altra Outroad, I just dont like that the toebox seems (and feels) slimmer. And in terms of cushioning, it is probably rightly so, more beefed up than the Peaks. Nice tattoo btw, hope you are not missing what you are missing so much :)

I've been considering a pair as a secondary trail shoe. I'm fairly staunchly in the barefoot running camp and wear my Vivobarefoot Primus Trail for basically everything but for me the thing they fall short on is really harsh unforgiving trails and mad downhill dashes (especially on really harsh unforgiving trails) So yeah, the rock plate plus higher stack height, more aggressively lugged but still zero drop and wide toebox means they should be a lot more "fun" than my Primus Trails but still fit into the barefoot ethos that I like.

Update: got a pair. They are lovely. I wonder if I should have got a wide size but they are still great. Good grip, kinder on my feet. Having all this padding feels a bit weird and I only wear them for running, not as a general shoe.

Does this shoes wear down fast if I use it on mountain bike or walking on pavement to commute everyday? Plus how do I dry these shoes fast, rain season in my place is pretty heavy so gore-tex shoes might not cut it. And the weather is either downpour heavy rain or humid scorching hot. So is there a shoes that can go trail like muddy, rock, pavement road, that can still be durable and can drain water so it can dry and breath. I know it's alot of features to ask for one shoes to do it all, but I would love to find it if possible. Thank you in advance.

Yep! I'm still running in this pair of LP's. I completed a 43 mile mountain race in them a couple of weeks ago. They're feeling a little "flat" after a couple hundred miles but durability is still holding up. I've got another 50 miler this weekend and plan on wearing them again. Hope that helps!

Hi, Dave. I'm wearing a pair of LP6 for my September's Camino de Santiago. Never had LPs before and if it's true they're fantastic I still feel the zero drop heel during this couple of weeks I've been breaking in /training 10-15 km a day. I'm worried about longer distances and continued days. Someone recommended me adding some gel heel pads. What do you think?

Tough call, I feel like adding heel lifts might be a risk unless you test them out a lot ahead of time. You don't want to find out that they add chafe or fatigue in the field.

Hi. I just bough them today. I'm happy owner La Sportiva bushido 2, two pairs, but they are quiet narrow. I can say that, maybe that's why I was looking for something different. Generaly I'am begginer with running, last year started, stopped for the winter(only treadmill) and from 3 months follow my garmin fenix 6 daily suggestions. Finally run daily about 6-7K, sometimes 10K. Finally start enjoy running lol. Btw-after watched many PCT videos, I decided buy Altra shoes for hiking. Maybe try something new, take more breath for my shoes after years hiking with gore-tex, etc. I choose size 8,5. Slitely bigger, 8 was nearly the same, I touched front but went to conclusion after many km my feet will ''pump-up'' and I will use thicker socks etc, so I decided buy size 8.5. I went for the first run. I have to say -That was interesting. I was little worry, affraid this ''loose'' in my shoes. Generally I always tight up everything, maybe after military lol but now it's strange, but same way really relaxing run. Didn't really thing what's happen down there. I think I will like them. Just need take some more km and it's like new relationships-just take it time ;) Greetings from UK, Tom.

Now, after couple of weeks running and hiking Lone peak is great for hiking in the forest etc. but on some rocky grounds I felt my heels.(plus runs on roads) Do you think which model could be better Timp, Olympus maybe? Hi Dave, great video. I have recently had a condition called metatarsalgia (pain in the balls/metatarsals of my right foot). My doctor recommended Altra shoes as a possible solution to remedy this issue. Your comment about the zero drop platform is surely why my doctor suggested these. I know you’re not a doctor but Any thoughts on if this could be a good solution? thank you, appreciate your thoughts!

A close friend of mine suffered from metatarsalgia a couple of years ago. I think he found the most success wearing night "spacers" between his toes but he also did transition to zero drop shoes. I'd say it's worth a shot but of course... not a doctor! Did your doctor recommend night spacers?

@@ChaseTheSummit he didn’t recommend spacers but we spoke more about running technique and he talked avoiding heel-strike and landing mid foot. That’s when he said Altra shoes are good. Sounds like toe spacers could be worth a try but I will also check out Altras- Thanks!

I am interested in Altra because of feet shape shoes and zero drop. The low durability scares me. I wished they offer less "pro" and more durable models as well. Obviously the weight would increase, but I do not care that much.

I've run through the winter with them pretty often and don't have issues. On really cold days I wear two socks (base liner + insulation layer). The waterproof LP's are also a good option for winter running.

I am looking to make a change for running and cross training. Over the last two years, I have discovered that when I train a bit harder, I develop runner's toe. I have used a variety of shoes. I have used Under Armour and Adidas. I have used a few types of shoes with Under Armour and Adidas. Unfortunately, runner's toe came back. What is your experience with runner's toe? Will the LP 6 help reduce or eliminate the potential for this type of injury?

I'd probably say go for a road shoe with a higher stack height like the Hoka Cliftons, or Altra Paradigm as long as the trail isn't super technical the outsoles should be fine in terms of grip. Running on roads with trail shoes isn't great because the big lugs can be fatiguing on your feet.

I'd probably reach for the Olympus for anything over a 50 miler but I've also ran a 100 in LP's so it really just comes down to that particular day and how I'm feeling. Not really a rhyme or reason unfortunately lol. The Olympus offer more cushion but they fee a little less tactile if you're on something super technical.

I tried the 8.5 on at REI and they felt too big (too long). But I just received the 8s I ordered and they feel tight across the instep, right at the bottom of the laces (moreso on my left foot). This surprises me since the toe box is really wide and feels great on my wide feet...like so great! But I'm worried about the tightness across the top (not really the width). Will these loosen up at all? Or should I go back to the 8.5s?

That's odd, in that situation I'd probably go with the larger size. The LP's may just not fit your feet since our feet are all different unfortunately.

What do you think about using this for road running ? I do on and off road but wanted your thoughts on using these on both since you’ve used the line so long

They’ll work but they wear down quicker than a road shoe because of their softer trail designed outsole.

Now that the 7.0 is out they're not making the 6 anymore. Natural progression.

Great review, thanks a lot for the details. I'm huge LP and Altra fan and most of my training runs are in LPs (or Timps). I planed to run my first Ultra (55k) with the new Mont Blanc, but after getting a blister and issues with the loose heel cup and upper material, I wonder if LP6 would be the better or wiser choice (Olympus4 too heavy). Do you think LP6 has enough of stack high for long distances?

It’s really personal preference I’ve personally run a 100 miler in Lone Peak 5’s without any issues. The Olympus is probably a better choice but they got the job done!

How did the outer lateral part of the shoes hold up? Any tears at their usual spot?

Surprisingly no. I've had these for a long time now. The mid-sole is basically dead at this point... which it should be after several hundres of miles but the side material did not rip like my older LP's.

I love almost everything on the LPs but the grip is so bad ! Its almost dangerous ! If it got a vibram grip it would be the god of all shoes imo 🤪🤙

I've had mixed feelings about the grip. Some days it's great, some days it's. Lately I've been running in the Olympus more and loving them but these 6.0's are pretty sweet!

Great review, thank you ! I'm still hesitating between le LP5 special edition (cause they feel a bit lighter and more flexible... the fit is perfect on my feet) and those LP6, but I'm a bit afraid about that more narrow feel of the toebox you described... But the weight is a huge factor for me.

It's a very subtle difference. Realistically you may not even notice the width difference. The fit is VERY similar.

Virtually the same shoe. 6 is lighter and has better drainage and nice overlays. 6 is better.

I have a very narrow foot do they fit to size 10/half I'm very interested in the lone peak 6.0 just for walking, n hiking

You might find these to be a little too roomy if you're foot is overly narrow. Though, you might be able to dial in a good fit with the laces. Your milage may vary!

Thinner in the heel. The Speedgoat and the Timp are the best comparison as they both have more cushion.

Brand spankin' new to the Lone Peak world and the "clown shoe". I just bought a pair of these babies and I have an incessant worry: will the large toe box/clown shoe trip me up? I had a knee injury that completely stopped my from trail running. I have a longing to return to some light and intermittent trail running alongside hiking. I fear (big time) that I will trip and fall and, subsequently, re-injure my knee. Have you ever tripped because of the wide and weird toe box? Heard stories of this? I want to be brave but careful.

I have not heard about any issues with this and my use of them has not produced this problem either. If anything, you have a wider platform to keep your balance on.

@@z0uLess Hey, thanks for the reply! All I got was crickets. I can kind of see the wider platform giving additional balance. I am just thinking of what it will "catch" that you don't have control over, like you would (more so, at least) with a narrower toe box. Still inching toward using these more often! @@ladykws I suspect that you are overthinking it. Dont worry, I do this a lot and I know how it is. Most of the time people dont even bother with responding to it. Actually, I was thinking for a while whether or not to lean into the clownshoe comedy theme you had going there in your comment, but I decided against it as it clearly would be complicating things more than it needed to. I guess consciousness itself could be described as the thing that self-referentially (is that even a word?) produces the contents of its own being. Who knows what overthinking is, really, outside of its lexical position in a language? Anyway, its a good shoe.

How have these held up over time? A lot of people comment that they sort of go flat after about 100miles.

They held up well. I ran a couple of ultras in them and trained a bunch in them and they're still in one piece though the midsole feels a bit flat. They probably have around 400 miles on them at this point and haven't fallen apart.

@@ChaseTheSummit how did you find them in Winter? I'm debating LP vs. LP all weather - but the all weather is much heavier! I live in VT, so lots of snowy and slushy runs. But I had a pair of LP 4's that seemed fine in winter bc they drained quickly.

Same s***e grip.... 🙄. After 5 pairs of lone peaks, just bought Topo's this weekend....no comparison with the grip....amazing grip with the Topo's. Also, no rock plate with Topo's but rock protection better than lone peaks. If Altra gave lone peaks a vibram sole, with a decent tread design, I'd never look at another shoe.

I've never had a problem with the grip but I hear this complaint a lot so it seems to be a thing!
