After a very excited wait, I have been listening to the brand new Analogue Productions Atlantic 75 series The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. This absolutely superb new Chris Bellman all-analogue cut from the original master tapes is presented on 4x45rpm LPs and pressed at the world's number one (in my opinion) pressing plant: QRP.
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway was one of the first few albums I bought, around 44 years ago in 1980. How good is this new cut? I compare the new Analogue Productions release to both my 1974 UK original and 1980 UK "Porky Prime Cut".
I purchased my copy direct from Acoustic Sounds at: store.acousticsounds.com/d/17...

That looks like a great package. This is and has been one of my favorite albums since I first heard it at about 15. It was always a great listen, but when I got the Rhino Records remaster several years ago, it was a revelation. The remaster is so much better than the original pressing, it’s not even close.

I just visited a friend in the US. He was playing endless 80s-90s AOR on his device when suddenly the carpet crawlers came on. Turns Out it's his favourite song. He added that Lamb was his and his dads(80 ) go to album and they would sit on the porch listening to it. He then produced an acoustic sounds box with this new pressing in! The box itself was the sturdiess mailing box I have ever seen ( should any of your listeners order direct from acoustic sounds!). When I got home and played it I couldn't stop.Played it through twice.mesmerising. just like you said Dave,it was a movie. Then I reflected that I have not listened to an album all the way through for a long long time. Masterpiece and you caught the zeitgeist of the album brilliantly

Still have my original copy signed by Peter at his home in Woolley beneath Solsbury Hill near Bath in 1977. I’m sure it sounds great but in reality 45rpm pressings are a pain for sitting down to relax to, constantly up and down to turn it over!

Oooo nice, I can't say I'm not envious of your PG signed copy. I do totally know what you mean about 45rpm LPs and all the jumping up and down, it completely put me off them until very recently: I honestly have to say I think it was the Selling England 2x45rpm release that finally convinced me this is a "lame" excuse, obviously unless you are lame, then it's a bloody good excuse! ;-)

The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is my favorite album, period. It IS a musical movie. After decades of only listening to the music and ignoring the lyrics, I decided during the Covid lockdown to try and figure out what the heck Gabriel was trying to say with his crazy story line. Peter's liner notes only re-tell his story and say nothing of its meaning. As with most artists, Peter is loath to tell us what his art means. That is our job as the listener. I have searched but found almost nothing that looks at the album's meaning. Not even the book 'Genesis and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' by Professor Kevin Holm-Hudson. He also simply re-tells the story with no attempt at its meaning. I finally put all the pieces together, after coming back with new revelations over the past couple of years. In fact, I just finished an essay on the subject and would be happy to share it, if you think you'd like to read it. I can email a PDF. Thanks for your review. I just got my copy of the 45prm re-issue and am excited to listen to it. Glad you wife has seen the light! (or is it a train?)
@DaveDenyer
@DaveDenyer 27 күн бұрын
Hi, I've not read Prof Holm-Hudson's book, nor anyone else's reading of the story to be honest. I like that art can be interpreted however the viewer / listener takes it. Rather than having it rigidly dictated etc. Not sure if I mentioned it in the video but I wrote a pastiche of the story for my O-Level English examination.
@rk41gator
@rk41gator 27 күн бұрын
@@DaveDenyer Interesting. I don't believe you mentioned your exam. Not being English, I have only a basic understanding of your education system. But I like that you used this subject. I love hearing other's views, particularly regarding 'The Lamb' album. Most people simply see it as an amusing fantasy with great music, but I think Gabriel was going for much more with his lyrics. Wish I could discuss it with him, but that will never happen. It seems impossible to even get in touch with him for sending a fan letter. LOL

Good review - I really like my copy of the Analogue Productions one, too. I worked in a record shop back then and bought 'The Lamb' the day it came out (no longer have that LP, alas) and saw then perform it in Berkeley, CA in 1975. Also saw The Musical Box perform it using Genesis' original slides and costumes. I know that at one point long ago they were in talks with filmmaker Alejandro Jadorowski ('El Top') about filming it, but that got nowhere. I've got loads of great Genesis photos, with and without Peter, but unfortunately none of the Lamb show (some great ones from the Foxtrot tour in '73, though!).

@@DaveDenyer As Larsman pointed out, you HAVE to go see The Musical Box. They tour all over Europe and NA. I've seen them several times since like 1999 and they're incredible. What they do is recreate the various tours that the band did using the actual scenery and costumes with vintage instruments (mostly). Last year, they took on Lamb and I went to see them. It was simply incredible. Phil Collins has been quoted as saying that the drummer plays the tunes better than he did!

Just a slight correction, if you'll allow me, my friend. The original label for Nursery Cryme was actually the shocking pink scroll label... same as Trespass. The madhatter only started on subsequent pressings of NC and then 1st pressings of Foxtrot onwards etc Cheers

This is my all time favourite album & I have this AP Atlantic 75 version on order. I don’t have a UK original vinyl version but do have an early repress from 1975 on the “Small Hatter Label.” The dead wax on Side A is etched CGS101 A//4 A PORKY PRIME CUT so it would appear that the same plates were used on the blue label 1980 repress which you have. Like you I have not experienced any humming on my pressing but I do not think the sound is the greatest on the tracks closest to the centre. Hopefully this latest version remedies the problem I have and if the SEBTP & Face Value are anything to go by this will be a real treat. Thanks again for another first class review.

If you get a graphic equalizer like an emb it has 180 degrees flip phase you can inject a 50 hertz out of phase signal and it will cancel out the hum, you could use a app as well do the some things

Such a cool album. I have a Japanese pressing from like 1978 that I enjoy greatly. I also have a US 1st, but haven't played it in a long time (over 10 years). I seem to remember it being solid. I found half a UK 2nd in a dollar bin here in the US. Disc 1 only, so hence why it was in the aforementioned dollar bin. But Disc 1 was clean, and I remember it besting the Japanese pressing. Cutting cut off in the middle of the album was a bummer, haha. I need to compare my 2.5 copies. I knew a guy who was a massive Genesis fan during their classic run with Gabriel. He mentioned how he eagerly anticipated the release of Lamb and was actually disappointed when he first heard it. However, he reappraised it and ended up ranking it among his all-time favorites along with their prior four studio albums. Selling England was his favorite album by anyone. Do I NEED another copy? No. But am I extremely intrigued? Oh yeah.

Really enjoyed your analysis and can agree with most of what you say. I don't have the 1980 repress that you refer to but do have my original bought on the first day of issue in 1974. I always found the hum very annoying for, whilst it is inaudible on most of the album where it is drowned out by the intensively layered content, it does grate on the quieter sections. The Lamb was my least favoured of the Gabriel era albums but has steadily moved up the hierarchy for me to the point where it is vying with Selling England to be my favourite. I think the AP 75 smashes the original pressing quite comprehensively and cannot see myself playing the latter again. I do have two minor gripes (I can live with the packaging differences). Firstly, and it is more of an issue with this than any other "45" I have, is that the necessary flips cut in to break the flow to the point that the first time I played it I was caught out a couple of times as the stylus struck the out groove. I suppose this is inevitable on a dense concept album but it still irritates. Secondly, as with my Selling England AP 75 the inner sleeves were crush ended due to sloppy packing.............come on AP, you can do better. In summary, however, I think this is the sort of release that makes the pursuit of audiophile perfection worth very penny spent.

Dave, I think the broadway melody of 41 may have been by Charles king(1929). I guess you also spotted the otherv2 lifts. The searchers "needle and pins" from 1964,and the lift from the stones song "its only rock n roll but I like it(1974). Peter was quick off the mark lifting that riff ,or did he get there before the stones? Would love to hear a genesis retrospective from you. I lost interest after trick of the trail but maybe I missed out on some gems??? Also, there's the solo works of banks and Hackett.. could you include? I heard that Brand X explored some jazzy territory too

Dave: Much enjoy your take here. As a side note, I see you're using these hard PVC sleeve protectors, as per your 1980 pressing, which I too also prefer. May I suggest you don't use them as the chemical gas content in the pvc can transfer through the cardboard sleeve and cause destructive "misting" on the vinyl.
@DaveDenyer
@DaveDenyer 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the heads-up on that. I only use the 'Blake sleeves' these days. But some of my older records are still in the heavy PVC covers. I have had one weld itself to the album cover (Jethro Tull - Living in the Past) so can concur that they are best avoided.

I struggle with parting with this sort of cash when the Porky Prime original pressing is frankly stunning. That hum is only really audible between tracks or if you strain in exceptionally quiet passages. I bought the UHQR of Steely Dan’s Aja and yes it is outstanding but did it add to my enjoyment of the album in multiples? No it’s just much better than an already great early analog MCA pressing. Nice review though. I just worry that there’s some skint 17 year old out there who doesn’t realise you can get an excellent VG+ original for under £20 and saves for a year for this.
@DaveDenyer
@DaveDenyer 4 ай бұрын
Regarding the 1974 original, this really does blow it away, although, bear your next point in mind: regarding the 'skint 17 year old'... I appreciate that many people buy these things as collectables. In that respect, fine, it'll still be there in 10 or 20 years time when said 17 year old has potentially upgraded to a decent system that can maximise the potential of this pressing. Assuming said skint 17 year old has a fairly basic record player he or she won't be getting most of the benefit of this, or any other pressing for that matter. And I'd probably advise the $120 was better spent on a turntable upgrade...
