Recently there has been an explosion of news regarding Amazon’s upcoming Lord of the Rings series entitled The Rings of Power set to premiere September 2, 2022. The studio has been relatively secretive and slow in dispensing information about the show but not long after revealing the name of the series, character posters were released, a Vanity Fair exclusive article also landed covering the premise of the show and character details, and during the Super Bowl a teaser trailer landed. Unfortunately with all this news and revelations my initial excitement for this series has waned considerably. I know many who are excited for this show however and so I’d like to say at the start that this video isn’t intended to dampen those feelings held by others, I’ve been covering the news and lore surrounding this series so this is just honestly how I’m feeling right now in light of this newest information.

The moment I heard Tom Shippey had been let go, I saw a parade of Red Flags. I may also add the audacity these inexperienced show runners claiming to write a story Tolkien never wrote it's down right disrespectful to Professor Tolkien's years of creating Middle-earth. To these show runners it's for a fat paycheck from Bezos. They don't care about Tolkien when this is a horrific mashup of Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings fanfiction.

Victory was never the point. Making an absolute abomination was the point. So long as this goes down in absolute flames, they have won. They never made this to make money. They made this to let you know they control your happiness. And to make sure any shred of culture that a white person looks up to is so toxic and such a disaster, that investors will shudder at the thought of even publishing the original books again for fear of loss of money.

The idea of the constancy of the Elves spanning ages, while the humans come and go in each episode is quite an appealing one to me. It gives us a sense of the passage of great lengths of time. It's a theme that appears throughout Tolkien's work, and also enhances the pathos of relationships between mortals and immortals. (Beren and Lúthien, Aragorn and Arwen) Ideas spanning millennia sometimes scare people, so Amazon thinks we'd prefer something warm and fuzzy. I suspect we're getting a soap opera.

Thank you for articulating exactly how I feel about this whole situation. The VF article just shocked me. They’re basically saying that “we’re going to make a show we THINK Tolkien would write” even though Tolkien DID write those stories but they don’t have the rights to it. WHY THEN WOULD YOU BOTHER?! Because it’s all about $$$ not respecting the Lore or honouring the Legacy. I am mortified that this is happening.

I never trusted this show from the moment i heard right after Christopher Tolkien had died in 2020, and Amazon supposedly got rid of the writing team that he had picked to work on this show; that was a big red flag for me. I sincerely hope this show does poorly but Amazon got a lot of money to throw at this show and keep in running for a good few seasons. And you nailed it, "most expensive FAN FICTION" cause that is all it amounts to at end of the day. It's a shame it's like this.

Keeping elven characters ageless through centuries while humans aged and died would have been a poignant and powerful way to capture the passage of time. There shouldn't be many humans in a Second Age story anyway! I'm also concerned about how Morgoth and Sauron will be characterized: there are so many ways they could come across cliched and corny. I appreciate ambitious story telling, but I'm expecting this to be more like Peter Jackson's Hobbit than Tolkien's anything

I admit to feeling very disappointed and misled. I was very excited about the second age finally being brought to life and what's being handed to us is fictional version of a much beloved fantasy. I have no issues with the actors themselves, but Tolkien's purpose was to create an Anglo-Saxon mythology to fill the loss of the originals due to the Norman invasion. As a college professor of Anglo-Saxon and English Language and Literature, he was in a unique position to do so. I would rather Amazon dropped all claims of connection to The Silmarillion and create their own separate fantasy instead of bastardazing

As having authored some works of fan fiction, I took pride on refusing to deviate from established lore. This is going to be monumentally bad. If they wanted to "write the novel that Tolkien never wrote" as the showrunner stated, why not do just that? So basically they are setting this story in the second age of Middle Earth and they are going to be able to use characters like Galadriel and Elrond because those characters appear in the books they do have the rights to. BUT, they don't have the rights to any of the books like The Silmarillion which deal specifically with that time period so they can't use the actual stories that take place in that age. So we are getting a story that is merely set in the Tolkien universe with a few familiar names sprinkled in but completely made up by these two hacks whose greatest claim to fame is working on a failed Star Trek project. This is going to suck ass.

I'm with you on this... It seems to me that the stories often became re-write in a sense, with the movie writers thinking that they can tell the story better than the original author. Doing this becomes a major mistake because them there are the people in the audience, such as myself, picking the theatrical story apart. "That wasn't in the story, or perhaps the writers left out something that was important to the story.

Given how Amazon handled Wheel Of Time, I am not optimistic for this. I was very excited that they picked up and revived The Expanse too, but frankly I was underwhelmed with the last 3 seasons there too, especially given that they're just ending the show well short of where the books are. More broadly, I'm really losing patience for fan-bait movies and shows that are just coasting on the built in audience of beloved IPs, rather than doing anything new - Disney Star Wars, this Lord of the Rings project, a bunch of Terminator reboots, the increasingly absurd Jurassic World movies. I swear these idiots are going to try and remake Jaws soon. It's all the entertainment equivalent of fast food: super easy to put out and bad for the consumer. Probably why I've been spending like $50 a month on audio books lately - that's the only place any thing new and interesting is happening.

I just went through this situation with Wheel of Time. Amazon wasn't looking for people with creativity or skill in crafting shows with intelligent, detailed, writing. They just needed people willing to make a basic fantasy with the names of extraordinary characters and inject tepid 'political' situations into it. This approach is so tired and so fake, I can smell it from a mile off. I've been burned so frequently by it at this point that it's tainting my views on inclusion; I just don't get why we can't have it in a story without having to make the story itself about it.

"Tell a story Tolkien never wrote" is a veiled admission that this is just a fanfiction, and a bad one, at that. I didn't want to get my hopes up about this series, and this is the exact reason why. As far Peter Jackson taking liberties with the books when he made the trilogy, I've never had a problem with about 95% of the changes he made; by and large, I felt he fleshed out a lot of things that the books hinted at, as well as successfully making both Boromir and Gollum more nuanced and sympathetic characters. Were there some things I wish he'd left alone, or kept in that were omitted? Yes, but at the end of the day, what he gave us was a faithful and epic retelling of the story, and for that, I'm glad. And that is far more than Amazon is about to give us. And I'm not gonna get into The Hobbit here.

@@jayaguilar2031 money and greed from the studio, definitely. Jackson phoned it in because he never wanted to direct it. It was supposed to be Guillermo del Toro, but while it got bumped around for rewrite and things weren't moving forward, he and his wife had a baby, because it looked like it wasn't going anywhere. Then it gets greenlit, and del Toro backed out, because two or three years of filming in New Zealand was too much with a newborn (and I honestly don't fault him for backing out under the circumstances), and they dropped it in Jackson's lap. You can tell he wasn't invested in it, but I don't really blame him, either, he didn't want it. But the studio pushed him into it, then figured they could milk out another trilogy with his name attached to it. If del Toro could have stayed, and the extra side story crap had been cut, I think we would have gotten a very different and more beautiful product. But no, studio sez milk them nostalgia feels and shoehorn Legolas into it, and hey, how about a spicy elf-dwarf romantic subplot that totally didn't exist and added nothing to the story. I really wonder if Jackson didn't just say "sure, whatever, let's just get this over with".

Tolkien created a massive and detailed world. There's so much history and opportunity to create stories within the boundaries of Middle-Earth's history. If Amazon wanted to create stories within this I would be fine with that. But to recreate beloved known characters backstories and change them is lazy and asking for trouble. Gladriel and Elrond should not be touched. Create your own characters and do what you will within the lore. How hard is that? There are dozens of characters and world events Tolkien has mentioned that easily could be used to create fantastic stories from. I'm sick of lazy writing.

There so many baffling things about this upcoming show. -It´s supposed to be the "most expensive tv-series ever produced" and yet: a). the cast are all nobodies, b). the producers/showrunners are 2 guys from JJ Abrams´ "entourage" with next to zero credits on IMDb and c). it looks cheap af, despite having such a high budget. -They want to make a show about the Fall of Numenor & the creation of the Rings of Power, but they didn´t buy the rights to the Silmarillion but have bought the rights for the Hobbit, LOTR and appendixes. Why would you do that?! - They want to make the show in a similar style of GoT, when GRRM himself would be the first to tell you that this is a stupid idea. He has explained that he wrote his ASOIAF books in a completely different style of Tolkien, because I quote: "...I realised that I could never write anything on the level and in the particular style of Prof. Tolkien and decided to NOT write a pale imitation of his works, because I have too much respect for him & his work." - They want , their show to "reflect the modern world...." The whole point of Fantasy is to ESCAPE the modern world.

If casting was their primary concern, then there are many ways they could have told the story to avoid long term problems. The elves are immortal, so they could have told the story from their perspective and made humans or other mortal characters more secondary so it isn't awkward or weird to see new human characters... plus it would keep the story intact. They would have told a different story from a different period each season, so the mortal cast would only change from season to season and the elves and other immortal characters would be the same and provide a consistent narrative. They also could have picked a specific period of time where a lot of things were happening and told that story over several seasons. I am more perplexed by the fact that they are trying to tell a story from a time period where they are missing most of the information due to not having the rights. Why bother even going there when you are going to be handcuffed from the beginning on what story you can tell? That's the part that makes it sound more like a cash grab than a legitimate attempt at adapting the source material, which is the frustrating part. Knowing that the series could be really good, but even more casual fans will be put off by the missing elements or drastic changes and get frustrated with the narrative (like what just recently happened with Foundation) and not want to watch.

To the issue of not having main characters through-out the seasons....I think it would be interesting to see an low-level elf befriend a young boy, let's use the name Derndan to make writing easier. Season 2 sees Derndan grow to manhood, marry, and have a child making his elf mentor/friend, becomes the "godfather" to that child. Each season after that could be the elf meeting and watching over that family as they deal with what is going on in the lore of the world. Some of Derndan's ancestors coming at odds through evil decisions, some becoming heroes and explorers. I'm not a writer, but I would find that interesting. If the show finds an audience with a certain story/generation, extend that one into another half season.

I too was excited when I first heard of this, but unfortunately my hopes have been dashed by this vanity fair article. I will still give the first episode a watch, but if it’s not following the lore, as much as this article is saying that it won’t be, I doubt I’ll be able to sit and watch it without getting annoyed.

I am dreading this series. The show runners think they can “write the novel Tolkien never did” (paraphrase)?!? and they only have the rights to LotR, appendix D and The Hobbit BUT they are setting it in the Second Age?!? Not to mention the short haired elves, beardless dwarves and losing THOUSANDS of years?!? HARD NO for me. The total disrespect for Middle Earth and it’s lore is shameful

"Fan-fiction" would imply they are fans of the work. They are demonstrating and practically admitting they are NOT fans of Tolkien's work. JD Payne speaks as though this is just a cash grab and he already expects failure. Just goes to show, when you don't care about what you're making, neither will your audience.

The rhetoric from these showrunners sounds extremely similar to the Game of Thrones showrunners, who failed miserably to create a compelling, coherent story once they ran out of GRR Martin's source material. The show has a chance to succeed, of course, but I feel that chance is dwindling with every new revelation.

Amazon did this with wheel of time as well. They are just wokifying classics to secure a younger more progressive demographic. Wheel of time did fairly well in viewership and it's possible LOTR can be a mega success too, even if the more faithful fans hate it.

Yeah but consider this. They badly butchered the Wheel of Time series despite the fact that THEY HAD THE RIGHTS TO THAT BOOK SERIES. They don't even have the rights to any of the stories for the time period they are setting this in. The names of a few people and places will be the only similarity between this and anything Tolkien created.

Two rivers was a town isolated for 2000 years and somehow has minorities. Unless your were never allowed to date someone from another street the town would have had to become homogenous. The bigger problem for me is somehow the power dynamic has shifted so much that the male characters are dumb , useless, and solely responsible for screwing up the world. Now they need a Pakistani women to become the dragon and lesbian interaction is main plot line. After watching last few episodes I researched the writer and realized just another activist. These people cannot create or write their own best selling book or movie because no one would watch or read.

While I think Young Galadriel is pretty, it doesn't make since that when Galadriel left the Valinor she was over 1000 y/o and after the end of the 1st age over 1590 y/o. So why the Young Galadriel? It would've made more sense to get Cate to play her. And WTF about Young Elrond?

Great video and agree 100%. The fact they wan to focus on one small portion of the second age has to be down to sheer laziness and cost saving. They don't want to recast. Thing is many of the characters endure the entire age so there would always be continuity. This is going to fail so hard it may even over take The Wheel of Time from it's mantle of the worst adaptation of a treasured world.

Thank for this great video. I was going to say that we shouldn't be so negative based on a single trailer, but the problems you discuss in your video are very well founded, and you express (more logically and in far greater detail) the same reservations I have. I think the central problem is in the second quote from that Vanity Fair article. "...but we're going to tell one story that unites all these things." Imagine if somebody did the same thing with real history. Like what if they made "Rome: The Series." A single story that starts with Romulus and Remus in the pilot, climaxes with Romulus becoming the first (and only) emperor in season three, then ends with a couple of seasons of decline and the main characters killed off by Vandals in the finale. All of the famous Romans and 1300 years of history condensed into one story about one group of characters, based off some encyclopedia articles. Of course real stories set in ancient Rome don't do this. They take a single era from history (usually one of the more famous ones) and bring it to life. The Rings of Power people should have done the same. Even then they may not have had enough material in the appendices to tell a complete story, but at least it could be a series that felt like Tolkien's work.

I understand her position, but even if you completely ignore the other points, the things that she did mention here are enough to heavily criticize this production. It's clearly done by people who don't care about Tolkien or his works at all. They could've avoided most of the backlash if they were open and truthful with the fanbase in the first place, if they didn't attack the fans, if they gave respect to Tom Shippey and used a different marketing approach and delivery of information. I'll watch the eps with a critical eye and it's on them to bring the fans back to their side because right now there's a heavy backlash from all over the world against this production.

Imo it's horendous from the beginning, creating a show on loophole of what they can and can't do. Pure disrespect of the author combined with lazy writing. They could make series focusing only on Harad let's say - it's not docummented in the books, they could be as diverse as they can, they could have any message, because we don't know why Harad alligned with Sauron. Instead they're fucking with established characters, lore and races, accusing fans of racism and trying to justify why they have dwarves wit no beards :))

What do they mean by not meeting major Canon characters until the 4th season? If you're doing the 2nd age and the fall of Numeanor the characters are all in place, unless they're talking about bringing in characters from TLOR like Aragorn and Gandalf, in which case this is going to be a complete mess.
