I moved to WA from Sydney 20+ years ago. I live about 45 mins from the city, the rural outskirts of Perth. It feels like it's in the middle of nowhere, yet not that far from beaches, brilliant restaurants, amazing bushland, orchards and so much more. The economy is still going gangbusters yet property prices are not insane. It's an amazing place to live.

Ess - Purr - inse is the local pronounciation. Means hope in French. The entire area was surveyed by the French - as was most of the Western Australian coast. The British built a colony there mostly to stop the French from claiming it. I've done the trip from Perth to Esperance in one day, it's a nice drive. Coming back we drove across the salt flats between Wagin and Lake Grace.

I was born and bred in Perth, spent 7 years on the east coast, mainly Queensland and Victoria, in my early 20's but returned to Perth to raise my family. Now, just past 70, with grandchildren about to graduate from high school, I think I can unequivocally, and with a great personal bias, state that West Australia is one of the best places in the world to live. My wife and I have spent every annual holiday for about that last 25 years going down to Busselton and the Margaret River region. It's a slice of heaven on earth down there, the wines are literally world class as is the Limeburner's whiskey mentioned in the video. The region caters for families as much as just adults. There is plenty for the children there as well, including Simmo's Ice Cream and the Margaret River Chocolate Factory and the Fudge Factory and the Berry Farm. The video was superficial and seemed to only visit up market venues. There is plenty by way of more affordable accommodation and sightseeing venues throughout that region without you having to break the bank. The key is to research online before going and planning your itinerary accordingly. If you do come, then you should exercise your face muscles first and be prepared to smile a lot!

Fishing is big in WA, you can fish anywhere - by boat, off the beach, the estuaries, the river, prawning and crabbing, all along the coast, all year.

I've lived in Western Australia nearly all my life and I couldn't live anywhere else. I love going on trips to our South-west but Western Australia is expensive as you said. When we go down south, we stick to a budget. Yes, quokkas are extremely cute.

WA girl here. We are a very chilled lot in Perth, easy to get around, not much traffic( compared to Syd Melb). If you want to do some ocean fishing go to Rottnest Island, ask for a fish charter and you can easily spend the day nearby on a boat fishing. Most fish is salmon, mackerel, tuna, and other stuff, and see sea lions, penguins and dolphins while youre out there. This video was a very slow trip to do. You could easily miss a few stops. Best to stop at Margaret River, Busselton, Albany, then Esperance. Theyre the main mini cities in the south west. Wildflowers are big in spring( aug-oct), down south but also the interior a couple hours from Perth. Nice day or arvo trip to do that. Have lunch, do flowers then be back home for 6pm. Albany was our main whaling port back in the day. I think it stopped operating in the 70s or 80s. Its the biggest city down south. Most of the accommodation on this video would be like $300 a night minimum. The helicopter wouldnt be as expensive as you think, as its only very local, would be a 20min flight for like $300per person.

I grew up in the South West. The video glosses over a lot of things because the distance covered is so vast. The most popular tourist town in the state is Busselton, so it is rather odd that they gave it a whole 5 seconds. Bunbury is a bigger city, but probably not as orientated towards tourist activity. The golden zone for tourists is probably Busselton to Margaret River/ Augusta. There is a lot to see and do there. Busselton has a 1.6 kilometre jetty you could easily go fishing off and has an underwater observatory. There are calm, serene beaches and some excellent surf beaches when you turn the cape between Dunsbourough and Yallingup. Honestly you could spend weeks there if your goal was solely to visit all the wineries, breweries, cheese, ice cream and chocolate factories etc. and there are wild life parks, caves, forrests etc. Not all, but a great number of the places there try to be family friendly, with play grounds, food menus, animals etc. to keep the kids occupied. I don't want to be too critical or negative about some of the other places and things to see mentioned, however the reality is that if you plan on going as far as Albany and Esperance, you're spending a hefty number of hours driving, and after all of that, you have a fair hike to get back to Perth once you make it that far. If you are budget conscious, you could potentially reign in distance, helicopter rides etc. You'd also want to spend at least a couple of days in Perth too - there is plenty to do and see there for sure to provide a more holistic and cultural experience. The Perth zoo is really nice and going to Rottnest Island would likely take up a whole day. I reckon you'd absolutely love it. Just be wary of the seasons and the weather in Australia. It seems to be the thing a lot of tourists get wrong because there are so many generalisations about what Australia is supposed to be like. While living in this region, I have seen buckets of water freeze over night, hail storms, cyclones and days that have topped 47 degrees celsius. It is the southern tip of the continent, so it does get lots of rainfall in winter and it supports a lot of farming activity. If you have a specific preference, then you can generally pick a time that ticks all of your boxes. Autumn can still be a little dry and dusty after a really hot summer but spring is usually green and warm before things start to really heat up heading into November/ December and beyond. If you want to get over to Melbourne for a few days I know a bit of a secret - flights from Busselton are subsidised and you can get over for about $200 on Jet Star. It also works in reverse. You could then get a reasonably cheap ticket if you wanted to do Sydney too. It is way cheaper than the Perth to Melbourne route - there are no major draw backs or conditions, as the flights are merely promoted by the Local Council to attract tourists to the region. The other thing I thought I might mention is that competition really hots up for accomodation etc. during tourist season around summer, Easter and school holidays. If you can somehow avoid these periods, you might get more favourable accomodation prices and places will be less busy. I had one of the best lunches with my girlfriend on a winter's day at Leuuwin Estate, which is really popular, and we were the only people there to enjoy a beautiful meal in lovely surroundings, so I hope this recommendation may possibly come in handy if it is something you want to explore further.

Hiya Phezz, one of your 25 percenters here :) I live in Perth and am doing a similar trip to the video in a few weeks time (last week of August). We're visiting most of the places shown though we're only going for 7 nights and not staying at expensive hotels. Accommodation for 2 of us is about AUD$1,300. Lucky Bay near Esperance is a key place to visit 'cos although I've seen kangaroos many times I've never seen them on the beach. Thanks for the video, you've got my excited about my little trip! Look up Roger Federer + quokka, many celebrities take selfies with quokkas who have a naturally smiley face.

Bremer Bay represent! My family was the key in building that town. My grandad bought virgin land there and created two farms. My grandfather was key in building the sports club, against the local government on prime land, and told them after it was built, what you gonna do? Tear it down? Tozers bush camp, my uncle owns that. Bremer is my spiritual home. Wildflowers found in only this small part of the world. If you do go to WA. You gotta check out Bremer, but be prepared for off road, if you wanna see the best parts.

Love the Southwest, don’t worry about staying at those fancy places, just get a tent, there’s plenty of places to stay either at cheap campgrounds or in the bush for free and way more fun than hotels. There’s excellent fishing off WA and we have the most wildflowers in the world but you got to come at the right time to see them, there are even wildflower tours.

Indeed. Fishing is excellent. Spring is when you want to come. It's not too hot, the wildflowers are blooming, you'll be in time for the whales and it's the off season for crayfish (you call them lobster) so the cray boats will be available for charter fishing (although beach fishing is good too). South is good during the summer to avoid the heat but North has some incredible scenery also (and great fishing) though above the tropic of Capricorn you start to enter croc territory. Hope you make it over. Have fun.

Maybe it's because im a Bunno local... but Bunbury could only be seen as a tourist stop point for a couple of hours at best. There's some great cafes along the main strip and the Silo apartments area and Froth Brewery is amazing... but after that... a quick walk around town and you're done. Dont get me wrong... i love living here, it's close to everything in the SW.... but i just have a hard time selling it as a tourist destination. On the fishing experience... there are some awesome fishing charters out of Busselton (Busso) and Albany for good eating fish.

On Rottnest Island that photogenic marsupial has been voted "the friendliest animal on earth ". If you google pictures they actually smile ! We actually have fishing licenses. This is because our waters are so pure and so many fish species that there are limits in catch and size. We are very eco friendly and like protecting certain species for future mankind. We had to protect our waters mainly from Asian illegal fishing boats who were and still try killing our whales etc. Australia has barrumundi up Darwin way to yabbies, prawns and oysters to bream in glut proportion everywhere else. We are spoilt. You'll never taste fresher. Western Australia is very clean due to less population and jobs compared to the east coast. WA is very big on farming and mining.

Such a touristy video. Rotto - fine. Skip Bunbury - it's a hole. Yallingup/Margs - make a beeline - that's God's country. Pemberton too - there's some 1000 year old trees there. Pack a lunch, sit down at one of the many picnic spots, and just meditate with Mother Nature. Augusta - great fishing. Windy as hell and cold tho - so be prepared. I recommend in/around Molloy Island - whiting for days, they just jump on the hook. Debmark is beautiful. Skip Albany - boring town, windy, fat women and fatter kids. Keep on to Esperance though - beautiful place.
