My mate was the cameraman who caught the crash as it happened. He told me afterwards it happened so quickly he had to move the camera ahead of where the car was to keep up. I was actually commentating qualifying for the local radio station and as the crash happened nearly dropped the f-bomb live on air. What the clip doesn't show often was the three flag Marshalls diving out of the way as the car ripped the roof off the marshalling stand.

@@dylanzrim3635 yes, exactly true. They decided not to renew his contract for this year, then the fans of Larko and V8 Supercars uproared. Every time a post came up on Facebook regarding Supercars, the fans unloaded on what they thought about the decision to axe him. I reckon, about 96% of the comments on fb were about getting Larko back. After a few months Supercars finally signed him up, lol, and so they bloody should have, as he's an expert commentator upon the technical side of things, whether in regards to the track or anything to do with the cars. I can say I've never seen any other type of motorsport that delves into the technical side of things, like Larko does, and plus he can be quite hilarious at times. Finally a sport which had to cave in to what it's fans wanted.

He ran open wheelers and touring cars; even had his own team for some years. He drove Mt. Panorama from mid 90's to mid noughtie's. As a technical commentator, he's great. Funny bastard, too. The Bathurst 1000 race is the king of Australian sports. There's no weekend like it in this country. I've driven around that track many times and what you see on tv does it no justice. It's a really difficult circuit, extremely unforgiving. While driving around at 50kph, I just couldn't imagine doing it at an extra 150kph. For those outside Australia, it's actually a public road, with houses on the side of the track. For one day a year those residents can't leave their homes. The road is a closed circuit. I once rode my motorcycle around at 60kmh (beautiful countryside, and it's hard to take in the view and concentrate on the road), it's hard to believe they can go as fast as they do on that road. The level of skill required, borders on supernatural.

That’s one day on the Aussie calendar I wont want to leave my home. With the barbie and beers and deck chairs out on the lawn soaking in the sights and sounds there’s no other place I’d rather be.

This video sums up everything I feel about Bathurst. Have watched nearly every single race live on TV since they started broadcasting live in NZ in the 80's. There is something special about that track and Larko sums up the emotion that Bathurst gives in that video perfectly. Every time i watch this, without fail, I get chills and a tear in my eye. Just magic.

I've driven this track after the race has finished and tv can never do it justice on how tight and high the track is , and that was at 60 kmh let alone 200+ kmh

So true, I worked there as Fire Marshal for several years. Sometimes need to drive as fast as you dare, in a ute with equipment, to a crash, amongst race cars. Absolutely right, TV does not show the sounds, speed, corner angles and steepness at the circuit

One of the things that no-one ever realizes about Bathurst is the height drop in the Esses when you start coming down the mountain. It is a massive drop into each corner, you cannot see the exit of them, hell, you can't even see the apex of the corner most of the time, all at 200k/h... Each corner drops abt 3m or more in height, it is insane even at 60k/h...

That's me at 2.16..a camera guy came up to me and asked if he could shoot me looking at the track...never did get to see it on TV as i spend all day at the track...I,m lucky as my mum lives about 300 mts from the front gate, so i've been to the race to many times to count and also lived up there for a year and done a lot of laps as well as walking the track..it truly is a mystical place

Great that you have discovered Bathurst 1000 at Mt Panorama and Australian touring car racing. Pity you did not see the best of the best. His name was Peter Brock. 9 time winner of Bathurst 1000. He is famous for 1979 win where he won by 6 laps and broke lap record on the last lap, but he won it on 8 other occasions as well . He won the race more than anyone else and was well named as (and still is) the King of the Mountain. It wasn't just how many times he won. It was his style and the ease with which he seemed to do it that put him a cut above everyone else.

That was fun watching you react to that. Clearly, you liked it so I hope some of your American motorsport buddies get to see it too. If only Ford or GM USA would enter a team...imagine a Team Germany and Team Great Britain and of course, Team Japan competing with the Aussies for the Bathurst 1000 International Challenge Cup. The fanboy meltdowns alone would be priceless TV entertainment ;)

I live in Bathurst, and theres a couple things i can tell you: #1: Camping at the top of the mountain, that bit where you see literally 60,000 people standing at the fence going past the grate, and stumbling down on Sunday morning, hung over to within an inch of your existence to watch 7 hours of racing is top 3 best things you'll ever do with your life. #2: i've done some amateur racing on mount panorama, and i've done that bit Larko spoke about down where you need to "be a balarina", specifically where you leave the esses, get your drive wheels back on the ground and immediately mat it all the way to the brake point for forrest elbow, in a 6 speed LS1 SS Commodore (4 door version of the 2005 pontiac gto) & i promise you, with half the power of a supercar, it takes every fibre of your being and literally screaming at yourself to hold full throttle through 2nd, 3rd & 4th gear down that grade. Beats any roller coaster. This is the best place in the world, and once you experience it, you'll never be swayed.

Just watched another Bathust race. It is truly the worlds best car race. It is hours of drivers driving at 95% effort but being 100% consistent, then in the last 20 laps it is madness of drivers driving at 120% of their and their cars ability, putting absolutely everything on the line and just going for it. It is a race where every year something unexpected and strange happens, today it was an echidna entering the track causing a safety car. The smallest things put cars out of the race. There is heartbreak, there is incredible excitement and it's all due to the mountain. What a race what a day. Love it.

G'day Ian. Mt Panorama was originally a scenic road, all dirt. Back in the late 1920's, there was an application for a race track at Bathurst, which the local council, at the time, said no to, too noisy, attract the wrong type of people, etc. So an application was put in for a " scenic drive" up and down Mt Panorama. The same local council thought that it would bring tourists and their money into the area and agreed to a "tourist track" to be built up and down the mountain. By the time the track was finished the council members had changed (elected by the people of Bathurst) and so much money had been spent, that nothing negative was ever said about it (as far as I know) and "the rest is history". It's amazing what you can find out by talking to the older locals. Love your work.

Mate, I have been watching Bathurst every year since I have just got out of nappies, I'm now 62 y,o, (search for earlier bathursts, Armstrong 500 and also Bathurst 500) It has been a growth of a mountain and a sport! Larko (mark Larkham) Has become an enigma of the sport. His knowledge and background themselves are testament to the man! The sport tried to get rid of him two times, people power alone brought him back!!!
