1000km race it takes 6 hours 161 laps of 6.25km. Its a normal public road. It is done once a year and its coming up soon again. Australia stops for the race on the Sunday..you get the beer and the nibblies and your mates and you watch this race all day. I have driven this road and it is almost incomprehensible how fast these guys drive the circuit. It is the hardest and best race in the world

It's a public road... but it hasn't been "normal" for decades. Most Australian public roads aren't race tracks, they're goat tracks.

Well, as someone headed up the mountain in 9 weeks, this is a pleasant surprise. Bathurst is one of the handful of classic tracks in world motorsport and it remains exciting because of how little room for error there is.. it's a truly unforgiving track.

Part of the Mount Panorama course is actually public road most of the year And quite often they also have to avoid the odd kangaroo crossing the track

We just came back from NSW and stayed in Bathurst for a few days. I am not any kind of racing fan, but when we drove the circuit I got goosebumps. Bathurst is part of Australian folklore.

With NFL football , its became softer because of the money involved in paying players MILLIONS of dollars per season so teams want to keep the players healthy to get their monies worth , not just American sports have gotten softer , have alook at some 60s and 70s ruby and AFL games and how much harder the games were back then

Scott McLaughlin got 2nd in the indycar race today, an Australian supercars legend. He managed to master a lap of bathurst. Wasn't scared of those nashville walls, put it on pole too.

My brother won a comp to be a pit crew for down Sandown 500 once and transferred it to me, Larko' is an absolute gentleman. I will never forget being in the pit garage. When you go and watch on the side it is loud but NOTHING like the roar of V8's coming of the starting line when standing in the garage with the pit crew.

Traditionally a Ford vs Holden competition (but on rare occasions taken out by one of the lesser manufacturers). A lot of us old farts still remember watching the duels between Peter Brock (General Motors Holden) and Dick Johnson (Ford) over a slab of coldies. Great race.

"what sort of race track did y'all design" Its a road that people actually live on and a couple times a year, crazys drive on it as fast as they can. Barely any run off areas and nothing but concrete walls to catch you if you make a mistake lol.

I remember selling programs for the Hardie Ferodo 500 in the late '60s, then the James Hardie 1000 in the '70s in Bathurst. The Easter Bike races were good too!

100 Kph is about 63 miles per hour. At the end of Conrod straight, they are doing about 190 mph. Across the top of Mount Panorama they'll hit between 120-140 mph. Mount Panorama isn't a racing circuit but a public road that was originally made in the 1930's. If you look on some of the wide shots at the end of Conrod Straight, you can actually see the driveway entrances and private residences.

6 hours (plus any stoppages for crashes and safety car), 161 laps, 1000kms, Uphill & downhill, narrow tough corners, bumps and that damn grate. That's Bathurst 1000 endurance race on a street circuit

Yep - and you can watch the races back into the seventies on KZfaq. One hell of a race. Drivers come from all over the world to race here. Giant Testicles required, a very fast brain and the best team - and if nothing goes wrong, you get to finish. It is called the Great Race for a reason. So do you think NASCAR is tough anymore ? Watch one of the races mate.... see what it is like

You need to check out Greg Murphy's "Lap of the Gods" at Bathurst from I think 2002 or 2003 when he broke the track record, unbelievable driving. Would be really interested in your comments.

Did a hot lap or two of it when it was a ‘not so policed’ public road back in the day ( 40 years ago). Navigator in my hubby’s HoldenHX Monaro that was fitted with a Supra 5 speed gearbox and LSDiff. Insane drive of a lifetime.

Its called Mount Panorama because it is actually a mountain, the elevation from pit lane to the top of the mountain is near 200 metres. In the early days there were no concrete walls to stop the cars from going off the mountain.

Welcome to Bathurst. The race track is a two-way public road with a maximum speed limit of 60kh/35mph. The race is 1,000kms long over 6 hours, with 2 drivers per race car.

If you come to Australia and go to Bathurst you too can drive on the circuit. It is a public road for all but a few weeks each year. Stick to the posted speed limits however.

Bathurst is 161 laps, 6 hours. Each car has 2 drivers changing after a certain number of laps, usually the main driver starts the race for about 1/3 then codriver does about a 1/3 maybe a little more then the main driver finishes. And they get so hot & sweaty they can loose 3 - 5 kg by the end of the race. There was a NAS car champion took a hot lap of Mt Panorama in the passenger seat. I can't think of his name, about an hour ago I watched an American reactor "Squirrel" react to it.. check it out if you dare

No one describes it better than Larko himself. One thing for sure is the cameras don't do this place justice.........the sheer drop down in elevation is hard to comprehend until you have driven round the track yourself and it is definitely worth doing 👍🇦🇺

The town of Bathurst is located about 200 km west of Sydney, Australia. A city steeped in history with a population of about 45,000. Usually held in October, the Bathurst 1000 is held once a year. You can drive, take the train, or fly from Sydney. It has been held since the early 1960s. There are 161 laps, the time is 6 hours, the distance is 1000km. You'll be surprised to learn that the track is a public road. The circuit is surrounded by many homes with driveways backing onto it. I've driven around it many a time. Do yourself a favour, drive to the speed limit. Numerous crashes and spectacles, but the safety incorporated in these cars, is second to none. Drivers are more likely to walk away, with a few bruises. Thanks.

Oh, and i forgot to mention, half the time its raining(End of the GTR Godzilla 1992), kangaroos (Paul Radisich) decide to cross the track or pisspots on the hill throw a rock at the cars (Dick vs the rock)...... So Larko only described the obvious fun to be had here..... Googling those other runs in the brackets should bring you the replays. Honorable mention (Brocky in the wet)

Mate, we didn't design this race track, outside of the Bathurst weekend, it is public road. You could be towing a caravan behind your 4x4 through there...... It just happens do double up as the BEST racetrack on earth

There have been deaths at this track - but they have always made improvements to cars and track, and there have been no deaths in the last 36 years of racing at the "The Great Race". This is a normal street area [except for the new pit lane] when there aren't races. You need to walk or drive it to appreciate the turns, twists and elevation just at normal everyday speeds, let alone hundreds of km per hour over the posted limit.

Channel 10tried to rid of Larko. There was a huge uproar from the public, this man is a legend here. He stayed exactly where he was and where he should always be! Commentating at Bathurst so up,yours Channel,10!! I have loved Bathurst all of my life.My aunt will not answer her phone during Bathurst! We are the female rev heads in our family!!!

Fun fact , The Mount Panorama race track is a PUBLIC ROAD for most of the year anyone can drive around it (inside the speed limits) , And the video doesnt show just how high these cars climb but just how blind some of those corners real are, I take my hat off to the skills of these drivers , only the Nuremberg circuit in Germany is tougher than mount panorama , these do 161 laps over 6 hours , Thats Tough racing

Well young man ! I'm sure that you are wanting to see a live BATHURST race Now ? October 6 is the Day that Australia 🇦🇺 Stops and focuses on The race ! We accept that we as a nation Our population has to eat and drink ! Toilet (Bathroom breaks) are time limited to 3 minutes , 90 percent of Aussies prepare up to 2 weeks Prior ! GAS for the BBQ , VARIOUS CUTS OF MEAT, LAMB AND CHICKEN, PLUS REASONABLE AMOUNTS ALCOHOL and soft drinks (Soda pop) for the Billy lids (Kids) Enjoy the best race ever !
